Hello TPU :D

I was wondering and I thought about asking this around the site just to see if there was a common theme or if there would be a surprise to me..

I'm curious about the type of make of PSUs everyone buys, doesn't matter the make or power rating, I'm just wondering what do you buy...

Recently I've noticed one of my Corsair RM units 'popping' on occasion when I power it on by the power plug, I've had this with a few PSUs over the time and well I'm guessing it's time to get it replaced and switched out.. Although with that I've been a little torn with what model to go for...

I've gone along with EVGA models and now I seem to be buying the Seasonic GX or toying with the PX models, but since everyone here would buy more PSUs than I would, I just wondered if anyone has another brand or if the forum would go mostly one way.. So, a little poll time :)
What make PSU do you buy?.... Doesn't matter of the size, just the make (not the OEM...) So please do discuss :D If its not listed, please click on Other and post a reply to a model I haven't put in :) I think I got most of them.... :)

I don't really have a brand favorite.. I have used Corsair and Thermaltake, as well as Cooler Master. I am now using a Seasonic, and I actually like it quite a bit. I also have a G1 SuperNova and.. the jury is still out on it. I don't really like it. It feels cheap, and it turns the system off when I reboot it lol. It does come back on.. but it shouldn't turn off.

So far thats been Corsair, EVGA, Seasonic, Fractal Design, FSP, Be Quiet. Changes everytime depending on what i need and in what price range.

Also no brand buyer here, I just buy whatever I find suitable within my budget range and for my current system it needs to power.
Had Thermaltake, Cooler Master and now I'm using a Seasonic unit since I had the retailer warranty option to pick a new PSU after my Cooler Master started developing weird issues.

For now it works just fine and thankfully I did not get a coil whine unit, my CM one had that and that was quite annoying and basically forced me to power off the whole PC when I wanted to sleep. 'I heard that noise in the bed'

I'm surprised Corsair isn't included in the poll.
Anyway, I have a Corsair RM850x in my main rig and a CX650, which must be 10 years old at least, in a much older rig. No problems to report.
In my secondary machine, I use a Sentey 850, which I think is a clone for this market, but at least it's certified 80 Plus.

I have bought about 50 PSUs in the past 2 years, split among Corsair (not in your selections?), EVGA and Seasonic. I have had 2 evga G21300 failed, one older seasonic 1250 and gx-750 failed, but none from Corsair.
The RMA processes for all the failures were very smooth, and lucky for me both rma places were in California so the shipping costs were not very high, but I do have concerns buying from Evga and Seasonic again.
And before someone jumps on me that Corsair units were built by others - yes, but they do design and specify the components of their high end units.

I have Seasonic in my gaming rig (Focus GM 750) & my photoshop rig (a really old 650w S12). I also have an old EVGA 430w in my HTPC. I just replaced the original 120mm fan in the EVGA because it started to rattle. I also have a Corsair CS750M & a BFG LS1000 in my Folding rigs.

I have a Seasonic prime TX 1000, 2 seasonic prime TX 850, Seasonic focus gx 750, Corsair RM 750, and a EVGA G2 850.

I prefer the upper end Seasonics or Superflower based psu.

It probably would be a good Idea to separate oems like Seasonic, Superflower, Flextronics, FSP, HEC, etc as they are OEMs.... Companies like Corsair/EVGA just rebrand them for whatever performance/price tier they are aiming for.

Even when buying a branded PSU I always check who the oem is first.

Seasonic, Superflower and EVGA. Specific units depend on the build im putting them in. EVGA depends on the OEM.

In the early days, I used to buy a lot of TAGAN PSUs - I had about 3 of them and used them in every system builds for friends. Then i switched to a Antec Quattro 850 and after that came a long history of corsairs.

With that said, Seasonic make a lot of Corsair's higher end units like the AX and AXi stuff (they seem to use Seasonic for AX/AXi below 1kw and Flextronics for everything beyond)

TAGAN on the other hand seems to have vanished off the face of the earth. They seem to have shut shop around 2006 and told absolutely no one and nobody noticed.

Had two EVGA Units. one died after a year.
had 3-4 Corsair PSUs, one exploded, one is still in a friends PC and the other ones were sold.

i only buy bequiet! PSUs since at least 10 years (i can buy them below MSRP or at MSRP because i live in germany)
not a single one died, not a single one had coil whine and even my almost 8 year old 750W unit runs a 10900K and 3090 (5.2 Ghz, 400W PL) without any problems. and it pulls around 800W out of the wall.

Seasonic is fantastic but way to expensive.
a 1000W Platinum Seasonic costs 300€
a 1200W Platinum BQ costs 220-240€

I understand the intent of this poll, but feel it is not really valid. There are just too many variables involved - not least of which is the fact that each brand produces many models of different, and even the same wattage capabilities across a wide range of quality tiers.

Seasonic has 14 different 750W models, for example! As does EVGA!

This means I may avoid the entry/budget series from Brand ABC like the plague, but not hesitate to buy their upper tier models. Corsair and Rosewill come to mind in that scenario.

In general, I "prefer" EVGA and Seasonic. But the poll asks, what brand do I "buy"? Those are to different questions. I frequently buy other than EVGA and Seasonic. It all depends on my needs (and budget) for that specific build.

If this build requires a 500W supply, I will do my homework, research the professional reviews, check the prices, then buy Brand A. If the build requires a 650W supply, I may end up buying Brand B. If building in a mini or micro ATX case, I may need a physically smaller PSU to fit inside that case, so I buy Brand C.

I will also note that in many parts of the world, buyers are stuck with very limited options, and often have no choice in the brand they buy.

So my vote is, "Depends on the build".

I'm surprised Corsair isn't included in the poll.

Corsair certainly has a bigger market share than some of the others listed. And it seems odd to me that ASUS is on there but Gigabyte is not. And what about Antec, CoolerMaster, Thermaltake, XFX? I could go on.

I realize "Other" is a poll option, but to me, the poll is like asking, "What is your favorite color, yellow, brown, or other?" You are going to get poll results, but, statistically speaking, do those results really tell you want you need? Especially with so many choosing "Other"?

FTR, I like blue and green - but not on my NY strip.

Seasonic, Silverstone, Corsair.
Back in the days i started with chieftec psus, than Corsiar TX650, RM650 (current main/server), Silverstone SFX 450 (itx 1), Silverstone SX500-G (current gaming, itx 2) and chieftec sfx 250 (itx 3)
But i usually decide about need/desired goal/watt/connectors/noiselevel/price/size.

Same here, I have had good luck with these 3 brands over the past 15 yrs or so. As usual with most folks, price plays into the choices, but most of the time, lower end models = lower price but also usually less reliability and potential early failures, but not always....

I have a corsair CX 450 that I bought used and used for several years, passed it on to my son for his 1st rig, then passed it to a younger nephew for his 1st rig also.... that was 12 years ago & it is still running strong in a basic office/surfin machine for my mom :)

As always, YMMV, so do your research & good luck with your next purchase :)

For my part, cost vs. quality/performance is more important than brand. But I've bought more EVGA, Seasonic and FSP than anything else so far. EVGA because they have refurb low-end PSUs for just north of free most Wednesdays (in the US), and I do far more reworks of old potato systems than building of machines that justify "good" power supplies. Seasonic just recently made it to the podium because Newegg recently had a pretty killer sale on Gold semi-modular units, so I nabbed some spares. FSP makes the list because that's what one of the local shops carries (or at least used to carry) for bare PSUs. They've gotten too expensive now for what they are; not even sure they have an 80+ rating.

I follow these steps for everything I buy.

1) Check my budget
2) Go to the biggest e-tailers of my country
3) Check the components priced near my budget
4) Open multiple tabs on the browser
5) Google reviews
6) Disqualify ones with no review
7) Check reviews
8) Check local warranty
9) Buy the one that has good review and good local warranty support

I rarely buy based on brand alone. I don't buy psus from solely one brand. That being said, I rarely consider PSU brands I've never heard of.

I look for units in budget, look for units from reputable brand names primarily, and then look for reviews of each unit to pick the best.

I've owned Corsair, EVGA, Seasonic, Cooler Master, Thermaltake, basically.all of the name brands.

What's compatible with what I'm building and is decent quality. When buying a PSU I tend to think long term, I'd rather spend once in a great PSU like the Dark Power 12 that'll live for about 10 years than in multiple low end units that will do for a couple years or until the computer needs a significant upgrade.

Choosing by brand is a mistake, not all PSUs from [brand] are great.
One thing I'm sure of is that I'd never buy an Asus, their looks are terrible in my opinion (I don't like gaming products at all).

A friend has an EVGA 850G2 which ended up being far better than the newer G3 in terms of quality, he's running a 3070Ti with it. I remember that PSU in particular because we went to purchase it together, it was quite the adventure being my first time leaving the country (there's no way you can get parts like that in mine) and going to a large city. Had to do the same to get my computer but this time alone.
