Haven't been keeping up in the notebook space. My sis is planning to buy one. I have been tasked to look into it. Anyone owning a NB PC with a Ryzen mobile chip like the 5500u? How is it vis-a-vis the Intel i5? She might be planning to do some video editing on it. Thanks.

I'm thinking to buy one for myself, the mobile 5000's are great CPUs. Just as good as Intel alternatives, if not better at times. No Windows 11 necessity for it to come with the laptop either, like on 12th gen stuff. :)

Haven't used any of the newer ones but I had a Lenovo with a Ryzen 5 2500u which performed great. Mostly used for light gaming. Also had 16GB of DDR4 3000Mhz. It did everything I can want for only $250

Does it run hot? How about battery life? I hope it can do 3hrs minimum.
No it runs pretty nice actually. Not sure on the life but it gets plugged in every 24 hours or so. When it is plugged in she spools up to 4450 or so I think..

Edit:
4350 :D

What kind of machine though? A more fully blown 15.6 laptop, or smaller convertible? Because battery pack sizes, you can only snag in so much battery inside a 10-12 inch thin device. :)

14 - 15.6. Thanks all for the replies. I'm going to consider AMD in my search.

Mine did run on the hotter side but it never caused throttling.

battery was about 4-6 hrs not great but I was gaming so it taxed the CPU and IGP

I’d recommend Ryzen mobile any day

Oh yeah it hits the upper 80s for sure. But its cooling is actually not too bad. I mean, 8 cores at 4350 in something as thin and light is pretty sweet. I havent tried any games on it, but for everything I have tried with it says its probably the best laptop I have touched lol..

Got a Asus 17" Gaming laptop for my 50th and it came with a 5800H and 3060. The performance rivals mid range Gaming desktops. The 10400 & 3060 is also a compelling Gaming laptop because they are inexpensive (if you can find one). There was a Gigabyte one on Newegg about 2 months ago for $1100 Canadian or $850 US.

All the mobile Ryzen generations have been great at 15 W, which are models ending with -U for both AMD and Intel, and what you most likely are looking for unless your sister needs beefy graphics.
The CPU model is usually the least to worry about, it's all about implementation. Watch out for models with crappy displays or subpar batteries.

I have a 2700U (8 threads) laptop, I bought it second hand for $200 two years ago and I'm very happy with it. Battery life is above 5 hours, and this is no expensive model to begin with. It DOES NOT run hot.

What surprised me the most is that it's runs Metroid Dread (2021) in Switch emulator at 35+ FPS, I expected more like 5 FPS.

If you're buying it brand new try to get the even series 56xx u or 58xx u(for ULV) because they're based on zen3 & are slightly more efficient overall. Or you could try the latest zen3+ based ones in 6xxx which are even more efficient & much more future proof.
How is it vis-a-vis the Intel i5? She might be planning to do some video editing on it. Thanks.
Slightly better VFM as compared to ADL based 12th gen chips, though that largely depends on pricing in your region, better RDNA2 based IGP in 6xxx series but lower core counts as Intel's "efficient cores" take much less space but also do less per clock.

Check out the various top 10 lists here:

Zen 3 5000U is great but usually more expensive. 6000U is still unavailable AFAIK.

There are 1195 AMD laptop SKU's listed here under 20 W, all of them are 5000 or older. 6000 starts at 35 W.

I'm thinking regular 6xxx H chips would be better, also because of their higher efficiency & slight performance increase due to ddr5 not to mention RDNA2 based IGP.
She might be planning to do some video editing on it.
And zen3 mostly because of 20~25% higher performance due to better clocks & much higher IPC. I think going with the latest version is better if you're doing serious work (i.e. that pays) on it.

Well that comes with a quite high price tag and discrete graphics ATM, about double the price of a 5500U laptop.

Haven't been keeping up in the notebook space. My sis is planning to buy one. I have been tasked to look into it.
What's the budget?

I have one with the Ryzen 5 5600H, it has about 95% of the desktop 5600G's performance at 45W. Highly recommended, it performs very well and the integrated graphics are fast enough to run most games at decent settings and 1080p 30 fps.

Mine is a Dell G15 5515 Ryzen Edition with an RTX 3050 Laptop GPU 80W, they should go for around $800 on the basic config though you will want to buy the 16 GB RAM model with a 512 GB SSD like mine that goes for around 1.1k. Here's a 3DMark score

Good luck :toast:

I work for a small company with a mix of Dell, HP, and Lenovo laptops. The ones that work the best hands down are the Lenovo's with Ryzen. The HP with 1065G7 processors are the most awful computers I have ever seen (or heard - jet engine doesn't begin to describe it)

US deal $429, although 8 GB isn't much -

Similar model reviewed, 11 hours battery life in test. The site rarely gives the Very Good award like they did here Edit: The reviewed model has lower resolution which of course improves battery life -
