I found a listing on eBay for a Radeon RX 6800 that was priced pretty well. I messaged the seller to check on the mining history of it and he said it was new 6 months ago and mined for 4 months. I have seen warnings about mining cards before, but I was curious what the ramifications of such usage would be for this card? It is $455, but also on auction. Could potentially get it for less.

I have been watching pricing for the 6800 for a while as it offers the performance I am aiming for with pretty good value imo. I game at 1440 and edit 4K video in Davinci Resolve.

Thoughts? Thank you, CB3.

I'm not sure if I would do that for $455. I can get an AsRock RX 6800 for $510 new from Newegg. It would have to be a really high end model for me to take a price so close to a brand new model.

It is an MSI Gaming X Trio version. I am wanting an MSI so it matches my motherboard. I know that is a dumb reason, but I have some OCD issues and hate mixing brands if I can help it.

Not for $455 $400 and under and I would pick it up.
The Auction is below $400 last I saw. But it has a couple days. Thank you for the feedback.

You are welcome.

If my memory serves me correctly and depending on the motherboard in question that you could get a few more frame rates when pairing your msi video card and mother board. I could be wrong but that is what I recollect.

Also lets be honest I just do not see the price vs performance vs wattage that I have seen in previous generations components.
Another thing is how big has to be to get that type of performance.

I can see serious problems fitting a shoe box of a video card, such as the Ngreedia 4090/flavor of the month video card stuffed into what you people considered a "Standard" size bling bling computer case.

In my case I like to keep my computer nice and cool under extreme conditions.

As posted before I use under 300 watts when continuously playing games or on other high demanding programs. My final target number for this PSU is 380 Watts so I've got some leeway with a video card when undervolting.

Hence my next choice is probably going to be RX6800/6800XT and if available it is going to be an MSI.

On a somewhat related note - would you recommend a CPU upgrade at this time? I could get a Ryzen 7 5700X CPU to will replace the R7 2700 in my B450 Gaming Pro Carbon. Would that be a good enough upgrade to justify the cost of replacement? I know there would be pretty good improvements, but I don't know how worth it they would be. I do primarily video editing with some gaming as a fun past time. Davinci Resolve is my editor, so it is more GPU bound than other editors. But I imagine a better CPU would still make a decent difference. Hard to say for sure how much though.

Definitely a good improvement, a 5800X3D would have you set for a while. If you run Resolve enough to matter, a Nvidia card would work waaay better than AMD, despite the worse gaming value. This is from Resolve making use of the CUDA API much better than OpenCL.

Yeah, I've heard that. For my usage, I don't know that it would make a world of difference and I'm just wanting to go AMD now. I may also wait and see what happens with RDNA 3. Hoping they perform better in Davinci.

This site has the 6800 valve the 3070 for Davinci, which is what I would be going with as an alternative too. His list is based on theoretical performance though, so the 3070 would likely end up being better. I mainly just like AMD at this point though, so I'm willing to cut a little performance for them. I know that's not logical, I admit that. It's just a preference.

It's not AMD, it's Blackmagic. The issue is that Resolve just works better with CUDA - yes, you can get similar performance with AMD but the stability will be decreased.

This is my suggestion. I have a AMD 1800X which actually = the AMD 2700 and it is 5% less than the 2700X. This is my back up computer and it is rock solid for what it does. It's not really that obsolete.

This IMHO will give you some time to make a future purchase. Just a few days ago Intel just came out with their I5 Series of CPU and that looks overall good in the price VS performance over AMD 7600X.

Both Gamers nexus and Hardware unbox has done articles on their Utube sites but I know TPU must have something coming soon. I say this because this is one of the very few sites these days that I respect the own and the overall community.

If you can wait a few more days then I suggest you do that. Because I've got a strong feeling that prices are going to drop even further on previous generations components.

Generally Speaking for the past 9 years I've been purchasing components from the end of October to a Week before Xmas. After Xmas sales IHMO are a hit or miss. Everything these days are orbiting around Black Friday + Cyber Monday and for the past several years they have extended sale ranges to really starting at the week of OCT/NOV and goes on from there.

However lets get back to your original question on upgrading to a 5700X. First of all you will notice a overall difference over the 2700X.

The price right now is around $230.00 US Dollars new. Your CPU Cooler and PSU should not have any issues making the switch.
And overall because it is running @ 65Watts your mother board will thank you for it. :)

It really depends on how much money you want to spend and how many years you are going with the platform. You also might want to look into used CPU's. I do that from time to time myself. The 5700X was just launched this April so even used, the CPU should be good.

If I was buying that CPU right now I would snag it around the $180 US Dollars + used and $210 US Dollar Range new. The reason why I chose the $210 amount is that you still have to pay for shipping and handling and taxes. And that brings up the total to the total around the $230.00. The current cost with tax+S/H is around $250 and then I start to question the cost of purchase.

A used one @ $180 with Tax +S/H will be around the $200 range. As you can see that does many a difference in pricing.

Here is something you might want to look at as well Hope this helps. :) IMHO the 5700X is really not a bad upgrade to make with what you have if the price is right :)

I have the that card bough from amazon warehouse last August, and I love the cards performance for 1440/144hz (no Resolve exp, but do edit with Premiere 2022), but at $455 currently? The mining issues wouldn't conern me, however I would say you could probably go for 6800XT+ at that price on the used market

You bought your card last August, so it was less than a year old since launch and it should be in great shape. I've already seen 6800's on ebay that are miner cards with dated 2020/ early 2021. If you can find something in the 2022 range and if it was a "quote" a miner's card and it is in a reasonable price a with EVERYTHING that supposed to be in a box set then I just might buy one. The price has to be good.

But the cheapest 6800 new is $499.99 as of today. Cheapest $6800XT is at $539.00.
