GPU for 4K

In the late-2010s, especially before 2019, if not before 2018 as well, back in the Pascal era, people seemed to be going crazy over G-Sync.

But, the HP Omen 25 (a 144 Hz TN, BTW) that I got in 2018, supports Free Sync, according to the monitor OSD.

For the Omen 25, Free Sync is disabled by default, you must turn the option on in the monitor OSD, or AMD's software will say "Not Supported". I suspect that may be the case for that Alienware monitor.
Yeah, it's not a case of that. Native G-Sync is a completely different standard that doesn't use the VESA/Freesync method of frame sync.

It's an expensive Nvidia-designed FPGA that added $100-125 to the cost of any monitor. It absolutely does not work with any non-Nvidia cards because it was their competitive advantage back in the day. AMD proved that the additions to the VESA DisplayPort standard they'd added for laptop power saving years prior could be converted into a similar VRR experience, and labelled it Freesync - but the native G-Sync and Freesync are very different beasts.

As Freesync has improved, it's caught up to G-Sync without any of the proprietary hardware or associated costs, so native G-Sync is all but dead - Unfortunately that doesn't change the fact that native, hardware G-Sync modules are still proprietary Nvidia tech that have zero compatibility with non-Nvidia GPUs.

however I see that someone insists on the 4090. here in brazil it costs 3200 dollars, so please stop. buying a gpu for me in this shitty moment is not a whim, but a necessity due to the fact that my 2080ti is dead. (probably one or some mosfset burnt, because I opened it and I saw black around, like burnt)
the comparison for the 4080 must be made against the 2080ti, and not with what the 4080 was supposed to be for price performance.
otherwise I'll wait for 2024 or worse, 2025 and buy a 50 series. Nothing or almost nothing will change because it will go 30-40% more than the 40 series and will still cost 1200 / 1400 dollars.

4090 or bust. Nothing else comes close to what you're asking for. If you can't afford the 4090, set your expectations lower. (i.e. Deal with medium or high settings instead of ultra, depending on your budget)

That's just dumb, there are other cards that can do 4K at 60 or above at maximum settings without ray tracing. With RT even the 4090 can't do 60 some of the time and you have to use DLSS/FSR at which point you can do the same on other cards as well.

Used 3070, man.

I know I've already said it, but there is no "good value" option at the high-end right now. Even in the US and mainland Europe the prices of 40-series is stupid. Add the banana-republic premium and import duty and you're just going to get screwed over, completely.

The 3070 isn't an upgrade, it's a sidegrade. If you buy it used now, sell it used later when the dust has settled from the whole RX 7000 and RTX 4000 generation launches - you'll barely spend anything, and you'll at least be able to game rather than staring at your poor, burnt-out 2080Ti :)

We it looks like you are leaning toward the 4080 and I would have to say, no don't do it. To me all of the next gen video cards are overpriced and are marginal in 4K with RT on. Raster is a different story but is still not worth the 1600$ or even the 1200$ for it, and I think in a few months, you will see the prices drop significantly once Nvidia and AMD realize that their sales are low because no one can afford their cards.

So, the way I am looking at it, the 4090 is a 900$ to 1000$ card and the 4080/7900XTX is a 600$ to 700$ card. The 4070Ti and 7900XT are 500$ cards as well to me. So, the question is how much do you want to overpay right now for a card? To me the 4070Ti and the 7900XT are overpriced by around 350$, where the 4080 is 500$ to 600$. So, to me the 4070Ti and 7900XT are a better deal since they are not as overpriced as the higher up cards, and the money saved could be used towered a new build or upgrading the rig you have now. It will also be faster that what you have now, which is nothing since your card is broken.

That is what I decided to do, considering Ada is priced extortionately and RDOA3 speaks for itself... but I have a 3090.

Say, why don't you grab an RX 6900 XT? They are much cheaper, and should be an upgrade for your GPU already. Better than no games for 2 years more...

Halo MCC, FTW! I could do 60 FPS at UHD with a Navi10! (IIRC) (In my case, the Radeon RX 5600 XT)

when i thought i should get a gpu, i immediately thought of an amd gpu.
but there are too many compromises.
performance, performance with rt, no dlss3 and now the icing on the cake, the monitor compatible only with g-sync.
too many factors that push me to get an nvidia.
I really understand the price situation, and I don't feel at all good spending more than 1k dollars on a gpu. I'm not rich and I have a crappy 12 hour job. I don't even feel like being satisfied. And then this thing about the prices that will go down I really can't believe it. There are prices of 6800xt, 6900xt, 3080, 3090, 3090 ti that easily exceed 1k dollars. This is obvious in my beautiful country.

That sucks, 2080 Ti isn't even that old of a card. I wish on the more expensive cards they offered a 5 year warranty. Spending that kind of money only for it to die that quickly is really discouraging.

to try to recover it and maybe sell it so as to be able to earn money and pay for a new gpu, or maybe live up to the next generation, I sent it to specialized msi assistance. let's see what happens.
I really cried, I'm not kidding, when I saw that a 3 year old gpu died. I was hoping for at least 5, but instead...
they told me maybe it's MSI products.
for the next gpu, I was aiming for a gigabyte, the OC version.

still on the subject of prices, I bought the 2080 ti in July 2019, about 1 year after its launch. I paid 1100/1200 dollars for it, the exchange rate in 2019 was different from the current one. Europe was already struggling a few months with the pandemic, in brazil it would only arrive around december. so in summary, i paid the 2080ti 1200 dollars in 2019. now,why in 2023, with the global economic crisis, the pandemic, the war, nvidia acting like a messican cartel and the world that goes to shit, I repeat, why should I pay 800 dollars for a gpu?

I chalk it up to bad luck and not just MSI but I can understand if you want to try a different brand.

With EVGA gone, I don't have a go to recommendation for Nvidia cards anymore. EVGA's warranty service was really great and they accepted two out of warranty Video cards for repair out of courtesy. Gigabyte, MSI, and ASUS are just big companies that all put profits before customers.

If you're willing to buy something that's a downgrade from your 2080 Ti but could tide you over for some time, I suppose you could grab an EVGA 2060 KO - Kabum has plenty of stock on these and they use the RTX 2080's TU104 GPU, of course, cut down to match a 2060's configuration, but they are a weeee bit faster than a regular 2060. There's also 12 GB 2060's available on Pichau for about the same 1,8k or so.

That way you could keep the rest of your hard earned cash invested until NV releases a 4070 non-Ti, a sale comes (unlikely, but can happen), or something.
