Nvidias midrange laptop GPUs are really sad...

The 4050m, 4060m, and 4070m were just introduced yesterday... and they all basically suck. 4080m and 4090m (introduced a couple weeks ago) are both well ahead of any mobile GPUs that have existed (though very expensive)... but...

The 4070m is struggling to match the 3070m and 3070Ti at the same 140W power limits!
The 4060m is slightly faster than the 3060m, as a a 105W 4060m is about on par with a 140W 3060m. So maybe the 33% power increase with a full power 4060m is worth +10% in performance?
The 4050m is well ahead of the 3050Ti... but you'd expect that since the 4050m has a whopping 140W limit vs 95W on the 3050Ti. It isn't keeping up with the 140W 3060m, though.

JarrodTech comparison of 3070 Ti and 4070:

Notebookcheck's poor "analysis" of 4050, 4060, and 4070 laptop GPUs: https://www.notebookcheck.net/GeFor...eam-Laptop-GPUs-in-Review.696414.0.html#toc-8

It's poor because they didn't attempt to normalize for TGP, and compared full power 4000 laptops to last gen averages. So I looked up their tests of Legion notebooks with 3060 and 3070 Ti GPUs. Scroll down to the game benchmark data and compare to the 4000 series:

Everybody was hoping the 4000 series would push down the price of 3000 series laptops, but that ain't happening... it will probably push them up! Legion 5i Pros with 12th gen Intel and 3070 Ti have been $1400 lately, and cheaper than that in the past. Cheap 3070m models have been <$1000. High quality 3060m laptops were going on sale for <$1000, with cheaper models ~$700. The absolute cheapest 4050m is $1,000. I haven't seen a 4070m for under $1600, and the nice ones are >$2000.

You'll all be hating on Nvidia, but I put at least as much blame on AMD. They pretty much did nothing with laptop GPUs this year, and so have less presence than the weak presence they had before. A laptop manufacturer will always wish to incorporate the latest in their new machines. When there is no competition, this is what we get.

Desktop users can hope that the situation is a little better when the midrange 4000 series cards drop. At least AMD can provide some competition there even with old 6000 series cards.

These are simply a reflection of what is already happening on the desktop space at a much lower scale. Ada is a formidable architecture and knowing that, NVIDIA instead decided to carve out the worst possible configurations - 4090 included, AD102 has a lot more potential - to maximize yield and instead target the same performance levels Ampere offered, at a much higher price. The 4080 and 4090 are still faster, but they aren't faster enough, it's not a generational leap, even though the architecture has delivered that, the product stack is just a pile of garbage.

There's more results here:

It's in german, but basically all you to know to understand is "Durchschnitt"="average".

They want me to pay...

Could you summarize, or post a graphic here?
I got in fine using Firefox (even with uBlock Origin) and Microsoft Edge...

All the graphics are "interactive", but here are a few:

Thanks, I obviously hit the wrong button....:p

This shows the huge difference between the 4060 and 4070 vs the 4080 and 4090. Just a massive gap. It would be nice to see the 4050 at higher power also, but it looks like it will be even closer to 4060 than the 4070 is.

i'd say everyone skip this round and wait for 3nm gpu/cpu laptops in 2 years. meh.

Well 4070m would be nice for thin and light laptop, looks like after 90W it's reaching point of diminishing return

My Laptop with 90W 2070Super is still plenty fast, but Frame Generation would be a killer as mobile CPU will always be the bottleneck for laptop

I noticed that also. It's strange to see this in laptop GPUs but... these are very low spec cards on efficient nodes run at high clock speeds to get performance... so bottlenecks occur before the power is maxed out, I guess.

I'd like to see what could be achieved with UV and OC. The biggest performance gains would probably be from a Vram OC.

Are CPUs really bottlenecking these midrange cards? Seems unlikely... but FG sure helps get playable framerates in Cyberpunk!

Nvidia's TDP values for the RTX 4050, 4060 and 4070 Laptop do not matter for gaming

"If you are interested in a gaming laptop with a RTX 4060 Laptop or even RTX 4070 Laptop, however, high TDP claims are not really important since the RTX 4070 Laptop running at 105 Watts will offer the same gaming performance as the RTX 4070 Laptop advertised with 140 Watts."

"We hope the manufacturers will explain this issue/behavior to the customers, otherwise there might be the impression that Nvidia artificially limits the gaming performance of the new GPUs. The situation is definitely not ideal right now and based on our tests, you will get the maximum gaming performance with the RTX 4060 Laptop and RTX 4070 Laptop when the manufacturer advertises 100-105 Watts (so it could be 80 Watts TGP + 25 Watts Dynamic Boost)."

so 80 watts is the sweet spot really for rtx 4050. interesting.

I'd call it the limit rather than "sweet spot". 4060 and 4070 are not much different. If you look at the graph above (post #11), there is only a 7% gain going from 90W to 115W on the 4070. Performance/W ratio only ~25%. And at the tail end it's right near the limit.

imo these laptops are dead in the water. I think once 3nm node is in full steam, that will be the time to drop money on a new laptop. for now the gains simply aren't there.

When are AMDs mid range cards supposed to hit?

Not sure why you believe 3nm will be better. Nvidia is just gaming the lack of competition plus the post crypto hangover for $$$. You get a big boost at the high end with the 4080 and 4090, but you pay big bucks too. In the midrange we get suped up 30, 40, 50 series chips called the 4050, 4060, and 4070.

In laptops, AMD basically gave up this year. Their fastest card is the 7600m XT, which will be just a hair faster than the 6650m XT from last year, and slower than the 6700 and 6800 variants.

to be fair to AMD, my IRL buddy has the 6800m laptop and its a beast. he really likes it. and it was only $999 when he got it.

I think the way to go is an external graphics adapter, not that that is a solution for a portable gamer. Might also be worth streaming it.
