This past couple of days I've been reformatting and re-installing windows and tweaking my partition sizes. However, yesterday evening, after finishing loading up Windows XP and in the middle of loading my programs my mouse buttons just stopped working for no apparent reason.
The cursor movement works just fine but the buttons are non responsive.
I reformated and reinstalled windows again this morning thinking everything will be fine but low and behold during my program load up the buttons packed up again after about 5 or 10 minutes.
Any ideas?

It *IS* possible its a power supply issue on the 5VSB rail, but thats unlikely.

Is it a logitech mouse? I have had this same issue recently. I asked logitech, and They said to uninstall and reinstall setPoint. That didn't fix it however. Oddly enough, the problem goes away when I connect my mouse via PS/2.

Does the mouse button functionality only disappear after loading something specific?
Like a certain game or app?

I've tried using a different mouse and the same problem persists. I've also tried swapping to a different USB socket and still no joy.
I don't have a PS2 mouse but I'll try and source one.

Id say it was caused by RAM or something, but the fact that the mouse works (just not the buttons) confuses the issue. Very strange. Does the mouse have any software you could install for it? Maybe the built in Windows drivers are corrupt or something.

Also whats the brand/model of the mouse.

Maybe look around the mouse settings in control panel.

Before my mouse packed it in the last time round I did an update of the software, you know click on mouse in Control Panel and take it from there. It obviously didn't do much good because it started messing up again.

The mouse is a Targus #PAUM002 which has performed faultlessly for the passed five years.

I have a plan. I've got a USB/PS2 adaptor for the mouse somewhere so I'll see if I can hook it up to the PS2 socket.

Edit:
Scrub that, the adaptor is not where I thought it was.

Also, the mouse is working just fine on my laptop in USB mode.

I've been doing some messing about and it appears that it is my volume control on my Trust DS-3250 keyboard.
When I twizzle the volume the mouse button functions immediately stop working and it does nothing to adjust the volume. Why this should suddenly become a problem is beyond me and I don't know how to cure it?
Just to clarify I am using a separate, wired USB mouse that goes into a separate USB socket from the keyboards wireless receiver.

Go start>run> and type "eventvwr.msc"
See if there are any Errors occuring at the times you lose keyboard/mouse control.

i would guess windows drivers were running the mouse up to a point then were disabled by your programs so reload updated drivers.

but then as for the keyboard issue, it could be crapping out or somehow they are using the same radio frequency and screwing each other up. try them each seperate with a wired mouse and keyboard and see what they do then.

Thats what he is doing, as I understand it from his last post. Though I may have misinterpreted.

In any case this is an extremely weird issue.
Does the mobo manufacturer offer any USB driver updates that might fix it?
What about Windows Updates/Hotfixes, though XP SP2 is supposed to Natively support USB peripherals using PNP.

ok, well my bad then.

try your usb for the mouse on the front so it is not just seperate but completely isolated from the back usb connections and see what it does. my guess is something with the keyboard is being shorted somehow causing crosstalk in the signals the usb is getting. definately need to try a wired keyboard and update the usb drivers too.

Question, and be honest. Is your Windows install a pirate copy?
It might have come with dodgy drivers, which would cause the problems that reoccur regardless of how many times you reformat.

ok have you tried without partitions?

maybe you ran out of room on the partition and somehow split the data on two partitions corrupting it.
