Resident Evil 4 is new material for lovers of the action-horror genre. In our performance review, we're taking a closer look at image quality, VRAM usage, and performance on a selection of modern graphics cards.

First page mentions Atomic Heart, I'm guessing the find-and-replace missed one. Seems to be fixed.

It's good to see that, in an environment where shoddy PC ports have become the norm, the RE4 remake doesn't disappoint. Hopefully they can fix that RT crashing bug soon.

lol @ that one screenshot where the guy has duct tape over his mouth and his facial hair is sticking through it

"Another result worth pointing out is that cards with 8 GB VRAM will be unable to run ray tracing at all"

bUt mY rTx 3070 hAs pLeNtY oF mEmOrY!!!!

"no game needs more than 8/10GB!!!"

3070/3080s and now 4070s don't have enough memory and whoever bought/buys them will regret very soon, you can thank nVidia for being greedy and yourself for buying such a product

Resident Evil Village was amazing. Looking forward to this Resident Evil 4 version.
Brings back memories.

They are all the Esports killaz...... The amount of performance the 4070ti loses going from 1080p to 4k compared to the 3090/3090ti is concerning.... Going from about 7% faster than the 3090ti at 1080p to losing to it by 16% at 4k would be concerning to me if I owned the card. The 4090 doesn't even seem like it's from the same generation being 76% faster at 4k lol Nvidia really gimped that card way too much.

On a side note I'm really enjoying this game. Loved the Gamecube version as well.

Just lower some setting and you'll be fine

Thanks for the review, @W1zzard. Would it be possible to add results for the A770 and A750 too?

I couldn't get the Arc cards to boot at all on my system, no idea why. Didn't have more time to mess around after 1 hour, will investigate in the coming dasys

While I agree, given what Nvidia is charging for anything half decent these days Vram shouldn't be an issue 1 generation later especially when the competing 6800XT/6700XT have less issues if any with it.

This has been an issue with Nvidia since the 600 series so I guess it's nothing new and people shouldn't be surprised they really treat anyone spending 600 usd or less like they are fortunate they are even offering them a gpu in the first place.

Nice detailed review as always appreciate the effort you put into these comparisons/performance reviews.

Texture settings seem like really hard on vram. This trend will probably just continue so '8 gigs are fine' days are definetely over.

4070TI's struggle with resolution is also very apparent. It's 5% faster than 3090TI at 1080p and gets behind 10% at 4K. That card should have had 256bit and 16GB like its big brother and maybe then it would justify the 800$ MSRP (compared to others).

Capcom really made a great use of new RE Engine with their old titles. Every one of them looks amazing and even with RT on they are not hard on systems.

Thanks for the detailed review @W1zzard , as always.

What is it with japanese made games and just royally sucking on PCs when it comes to optimization? Forspoken, final fantasy, resident evil 4, ece.

Do you mean like a temporary fix until a workaround is found? Otherwise what's the point of having a better card (3070 vs 3060) and then having to lower settings... You're not getting you're money's worth...
I really hope this doesn't become a trend.

And the 4060 is planned to come out with just 8Gb also, which means at launch it won't be able to run this unlike it's predecessor (3060)

just disable RT and play 640x480 pixel with nvidia cards lol

The only issues with some of these games is it prevents you from fully customizing the keyboard. I'm left handed and use the arrows to control movement, delete to reload, L CTRL to crouch, Zero on the left side to jump, the ENTER button to interact, use, pick up etc., and so on. Some games have keys that are bound and cannot be modified. Ya its annoying.

I think the 3070 / 3070 Ti might be the fastest outmoded midrange or higher card Nvidia has ever released, it's ran into more VRAM issues early on than even the 1060 3GB did. The 3070's VRAM is precisely what kept me from buying it.

Compared to recent releases, this one really isn't that bad. This might just be the new normal for AAA titles given the one's we've seen thus far seem to be forming that pattern.

same here, had a 3080 but sold while they still were worth something to get a 7900 XT 20GB and don't worry about VRAM comsumption anymore
3070 should have been 12GB
3080 16GB
4070/TI 16GB

Nvidia's pathetic 8GB ram in 3070 (TI) is precisely why I bought a second hand 6800XT. And for photo processing with very large files using AI upscaling the AMD card slaughters my old 2080 Super and I no longer run out of memory.

For the money 4070 Ti needed to be 16GB on 256 but bus and a cut down AD103. I would still buy the 7900XT over the 4070 Ti as I don't just game. 20GB is a lot more future proof to. Still this gen from both companies is underwhelming. Blackwell is an all new architecture compared to Ada's evolution of previous gens. RDNA3 over-promised and under delivered and RT still sucks in most cases. RDNA4 needs to do a lot better. Since I won't be getting a 4K monitor anytime soon, 6800XT will do me nicely for another 2 years.

Damn, looks like I could enable RT with my overclocked 6700 XT. I play with high-ish settings in 4K60.

The fact that most cards out these don't have anything more than 8GB of VRAM, this game is a fail when it comes to optimization. So they want people to start running FSR for 1080p even for a card like the RTX 3070 Ti. While I agree that Nvidia created this problem by limiting the amount of VRAM, but throwing more VRAM is not going to solve the problem because developers can optimize the game to fit within the VRAM limit, but they chose not to do it. So even with 12 or 16GB, that root cause of poor optimization does not go away.

Tried the demo on my 3060Ti, the game kept crashing from D3D error in the menu whenever I got close to 7GB VRAM used. Finally managed to get in game with setting showing ~6GB usage. Crashed again during the bingo cutscene. Never even attempted to enable RT, so that's no the issue here.

Capcom messed up something, the game needs a patch, not a better GPU.

Looks like it's time to get rid of my 5700xt a d buy a 6800xt or 6900xt

If more game went the route of TLOU part 1 whereas you lower texture from Ultra to High is substantial, high to medium means your game turns into dogshit, many gamer with 3060ti to 3070ti will soon have to make ridiculous choice if they want to keep using RT.

Just lower some setting and you'll be fine

Really you mean lower texture settings. Which for $500 + cards that are only a few years old is not really acceptable. Especially when cheaper cards can handle the same settings without crashing. Someone who purchased a 3060Ti over a 6700XT for the RT benefit is not going to see it because the former cannot handle RT at 1440p max where as the 6700XT can do it over 60 fps. Same for 3070/3070Ti vs the 6800.

This game is not even RT heavy but other games that come out might be really RT heavy with high VRAM loads and as much as the RT capabilities of a 3070 dwarf that of the 6700XT or 6800 if the VRAM buffer is too small then that hardware is being wasted.
