When watching videos yesterday, one Redditor encountered a popup informing them that "Ad blockers are not allowed on YouTube." :wtf: Google has announced that it has begun experimenting with a feature that blocks users who have an ad blocker enabled on YouTube. Those who have seen the pop-up say they can ignore those options, and close the pop-up and continue blocking ads as usual – though for how long, who's to say?

Asked for comment, a Google spokesperson replied that it was a "small experiment." "We're running a small experiment globally that urges viewers with ad blockers enabled to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium," they said via email. "Ad blocker detection is not new, and other publishers regularly ask viewers to disable ad blockers."

So did anyone of you get the pop-up yet? If you did, what blocker are you using? Since it's a limited rollout it would also be interesting to know in what region you are if you got the pop-up, so post below. I tested it on Firefox (with uBlock Origin) and MS Edge (with AdGuard) & I didn't get a pop-up. But with all the layoffs and the downward spiraling economy I wouldn't be surprised if they soon roll it out globally to please shareholders.

Hmm seems like they potentially be going down the twitch path. :(

Hopefully it never becomes more than a nag box.

I gave up and actually got Youtube Premium. Mo money less problems.

Hell no. Lemmie get 5 more adblocker real quick.

No. I'm using Firefox and Adblock Plus

Just checked it and there was not a notice from Youtube.

The day ad blockers no longer work on YouTube will be the day I no longer use anything made by Google. Maybe I'll keep my Android phone, but that will be it.

I haven't seen the pop-up on my end yet (using uBlock Origin on Chrome/Windows and AdGuard on Chrome/mobile). I'll keep an eye out and post here if I see anything.

I was reading about this yesterday, I don't have seen this popup yet on youtube.

I never seen the ads but when i do i surly can go without youtube.

I'm surprised they aren't doing something like locking the video playback at 320p if you skip ad's.

ublock origin is still working. if they do this, I will just go to floatplane or play more games instead of watching youtube, i'm fine with either. i don't watch ads.

fuck'em, they already harvest all our data and sell it for their yacht club membership. fuck'em

replace asus with google in video title

I am just using Brave no issues with Google bad ads, I wish I could have the same on my Apple 4K TV without paying because I am too lazy to use my iphone to cast so I never use the youtube app anyway.

ublock origin isn't classified as an adblocker, so maybe thats why its still working for me.

Hilarious ^^^

I was seconds away from hitting post on a reply calling out in video ads as being the real nuisance YT viewers should be able to block. Right up there with a filter that terminates any instances of "Like subscribe and buy into my shill accessory account to fund meeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!

Google earnings probably starting to suffer so you can expect more things like this...

Suffer? They're raking in more eyeballs than ever, I've never seen that message before though. I wonder if the OP broke YT or something :D

Also there's one particular adblock I know that stops the annoying ads played between any video!

The thing is the videos I do watch (mostly board game stuff and old Cracked) became a LOT more bearable so I enjoy them more. Also I mostly watch on a tablet with the app so there's that.

It's called A/B testing, it's random. You're not going to get any significant info from a random poll.
At the same time, I'm not sure what ads are there to block on youtube.com. The adds are videos, is there a blocker that blocks those?

Haven't seen an ad in years on youtube (besides the way Linus and some others doing it) on my desktop/laptop... Neither that pop-up.

Firefox and uBlock Origin - nothing yet.

If they hadn't gotten so obnoxious with ads, I wouldn't be using an adblocker.
A couple ads at the start of a video, sure, I can deal with that.
A couple at the start, and 1 or 2 more, what feels like every 5 mins(depending on video length) - my interest in a video drains from the distraction, and I end up not finishing it.
I may as well play a game, read manga/webnovel, or touch more grass.
Every now and then, they sneak a minutes long ad on you - fortunately, those can be skipped.

No.

Use Opera daily. Also using Edge at the moment as a secondary.

exactly, back in the day when it was a single 4-6 second ad, i was fine with that. they kept pushing it and pushing it, etc. greedy fucks brought this upon themselves.

ublock origin til i die boys!

Yes they're in decline, obviously they make a lot of money. Revenue is still up, in nominal terms, 2.61%. I expect they'll see pretty significant revenue decline as well through the incoming recession. So they're likely to clamp down on things that are hurting them financially. If you look, you'll see signs of distress at other mega caps, like Amazon paying people to collect because they lose billions on delivery...

Net income 15.05B - 8.43%
Diluted EPS 1.17 -4.88%
Net profit margin 21.57% -10.76%
