This is the amp in question, I want to run a pair of usb powered desktop speakers with a 3.5m connection and get sound from the PC. I have a 3.5m to 3.5m cable to plug into the MP3 connection and the PC, though how do I connect my 3.5m speakers to the left and right ports on the back of the amp to get sound, are there any such splitters or can I strip the wire myself?

Note: the speakers are not usb connection, they connect with a 3.5m jack they are only USB powered, everything else should work as described with the last detail being splitting the 3.5m jack of the speakers to the L/R connections on the back of the amp

You will need to strip, but I not 100% sure its a good idea. I don't think the 3.5mm cable is the right diameter to be a speaker cable, although I could be wrong.
I would check how much input the USB speaker can handle with its 3.5mm port, I have an idea you could end up sending too much power.

Either way the outputs require a wire end, preferably tinned to prevent oxidation of the copper.

It does say it has speaker out protection and tbh I'm not too worried about the speakers as they were only cheap though I can't seem to get enough sound out of them with the onboard, same with my headphones, I've used one of these before though I think it had an option for RCA out as well and I just used a 3.5 to RCA out adaptor, oh well looks like I might not be able to use it

Well, the bigger problem is the amp + amp situation, if the speakers are USB powered, they should already have an amp.
The amp you have shown is a speaker amp, which power speakers directly, no other amp.

Wait so powered speakers don't need a separate power source if I'm using this amp? I have some Logitech speakers I bought a while ago and was going to use them but was unable to power them so they've been sat in a cupboard somewhere

If they are small pc speakers they will get all the power they need from the usb connection. that being said, I think it is a good idea for you to actually tell us what kind of speakers you are messing around with

Correct, take a look at this image of a Logitech Z906 unit for example, the amp is inside, you can see the wall plug, and its audio inputs. Next to it is the speakers.

I've got some similar speakers from a Logitech set though without the sub woofer/amp base unit and just figured as they were powered speakers I couldn't use them, I might have to find them, I'm sure they have the correct L/R wires on them already if they can be powered by this amp

Better idea if they use proper speaker cables, I can see your amp will drive pretty much any speakers, since its 2-8 ohms.

1 - Post the product name/number!
2 - Powered speakers. This literally means they have a built in amplifier. For proper functionality, it should just be a matter of connecting usb power and audio in for them to work. And with the exact product information (see 1) this can easily be verified for you.

Well you mean active-passive, all speakers are powered :)

I have determined from the replies already in this thread these are likely going to be no good for what I want to do and will attempt to find the Logitech speakers I have which should be a better fit due to already having speaker wires and not having an in built amp

Definitely not, 10w even with USB. 10w is close to TV speakers (not to sound offense). Post the Logitech's when you find them.

Yup, none taken they were cheap and perform as expected, I will find the Logitechs, should work much better for this, not today unfortunately as I haven't got the time to dig them out and do this (likely buried ina big storage cupboard out of the way....)

I think this is an interesting little project, but it probably won't be any better or cheaper than good stock powered computer speakers.

1) Is that a car amp? Exactly how are you sending it 12V? What is it's power capacity, RMS, peak-peak, ect?

2) Forget using computer speakers. Find some old school speakers on ebay of the proper impedance and power to match the amp and get a small spool of wire of the correct gauge for the power.

I use a late 80s era Sony system hooked up to our HTPC and it sounds great, and similar concept as what you are doing.

L/R connections on the back of the amp
You need a set of 4, 6 or 8ohm passive speakers to work with this amp.

An active speakerset works without this amp and could be connected straight to your PC.
