Is it safe to store long-term roms and emulators from various consoles in the free cloud? the company that owns the free cloud will delete my roms and emulators

Is the free cloud reliable for long-term data storage even without me having control over the files?

Sounds like you just need a little storage rig. Anything you cloud save can be scanned at their discretion.

I recently bought an 8 TB hard drive for £130. In the long run, it's a lot cheaper than any cloud storage - not to mention, no one scans my files for anything. ;)

HDD is not reliable long time storage is mechanical

How long are we talking here? Decades? HDD's are good at long term storage. Or optical discs, like the M-DISC, or just bluray.

What is more important is of course to have multiple copies at multiple locations.

I have the files on M-Disc DVD Verbatim but I would like to put them in the cloud because they may fail in the future and I lose the files

yes, decades

You are more likely to lose stuff "in the cloud" esp. if free. Just like my hotmail emails, that MS just recently decided to nuke. And remember rapidshare? A company that promises free forever means = free for as long as we are in business. That is often not long... if the company is successful it will be taken over. If the company is not successful it will go bust.

Take PERSONAL responsibility for your assets you wish to protect. There is no such thing as free storage or free security.

Take the opportunity to learn something. Get a cheap second hand NAS off ebay, e.g. synology, put two HDDs in, and RAID it. Use it as LOCAL LAN backup or archive or "local cloud". Much faster, and cheaper in the long run, more secure, and learn.

This! That's why I keep a copy of family pictures on the above mentioned HDD, another copy on my external HDD, and yet another on an SSD that I keep on a shelf, out of a computer. I'm also planning to do M-disc backups later. If one of these fails in the future, I'll just buy another drive and make another copy.

I have a spinner in my system that I plug in now and then. It has everything that I want to keep. I also have a couple of other drives that I use as well, but not as often. Just plug them in now and then to charge the platter and you are good

You think cloud is safer than local? Loool okay look. A flood can hit the cloud servers just as well as your house. The only thing you can do is properly backup your files and don't do dumb things like click janky links.

A cloud service can read your files, distribute, or even just flat delete them. When you use a cloud save it's not your file anymore.

It depends on which service you’re using. Without knowing we’re just speculating.

Most legitimate hosts will have an off-site backup of their servers. You can also encrypt your data before you backup and not all cloud servers (any?) will distribute or delete your files.

Guess what that is what cloud services use or ssds which have limited write cycles.

Youre safer to keep stuff locally in a fire and water proof box.

No such thing as doubt free. Forget about the cloud. I have a second machine with a RAID5 array. That's a good first step. Failing that, there should be an external HDD to back that up once in a while, and some M-DISC (which you already mentioned) for the really important files.

When idiots coined the term cloud for the internet, that's when I said Nope

Anything that's 'on the cloud' is both practically and legally not in your dominion; it's only vaguely 'yours'. That's been clearly demonstrated by Google, Microsoft, etc.
Never use 'The Cloud' for ANYTHING that could even remotely be construed as 'offensive', 'illegal', or otherwise 'personal'. Emulators and game ROMs, easily could be 'assumed pirated' and be deleted, or worse (depending on your local laws.)

Ex: Amazon just recently shut-off all services to a customer, because their door camera thought they used a naughty word... He got them back, since he's a good lil consumer, but that confirmed for all to see that all 'cloud' services of any kind cannot be trusted, and you have no true authority over anything used in concert with those services.

I can do off-site backup too, I just need to bribe my sister with food and have an auto backup schedule to a little server in her home. Done!

hi gamer87,

I've been keeping my own HDD backups since I first got involved in PC's from 1985.

I have multiple Copies on multiple HDD's = I clone WIN os and data drives to at least two different HDD's for each HDD in the various pc's/laptops.

I store them on a shelf and perform cloning whenever I do major installs/updates.

Never lost anything !!!

Idk people have been using google drive as their torrent box since it’s inception and I don’t recall anyone having their account deleted (particularly if using encryption)

I’m not saying anyone should trust the cloud (or their shelf, or someone else’s home), but some of what’s being said here is misinformed

If that's true, then it's one less reason to doubt "the cloud". Still a million left, though.

Right, just like a shelf or a friend or even a security deposit box

I only have one rule: what physically isn't yours, and/or needs a subscription fee to be paid, can't be trusted.

It's why I still buy software on disc (I bought W11 Pro OEM on dvd in 2021) besides I don't like waiting for a download to complete for an OS/game etc. The Person who created the hdd for local storage was a genius because before then computers were just stupid nodes having to rely on a mainframe. Sounds like they are trying to go back to the pc being stupid nodes.

Or they want people to be stupid nodes.
