Hi guys,I have decided its time to upgrade from my old PC thats in my profile that you guys helped me with more than 7years ago.

I just bought a Intel Core i9-12900k cpu and a EVGA 850W computer power supply for it.I had thought to buy a i7 12700 new but scored a deal on a near new i9 for less than the i7.Anyway my budget was to be less than $800 and I think I just blew that as both parts cost $710.
So I'll have to skimp on the MB.Theres so much around and to be honest,I want to overlock the cpu later in the year. Now as long as I can use DDR5 (I'm future proofing my PC as much as I can coz my builds will be CPU generations apart) and it has M2 slots,I plan to use only two with one SSD (at most),has USB 3.2 and the other fancy stuff
.Would anyone know a board that would suit thats more budget friendly than gaming crazy expensive. If I have to,ill forgo getting a overclocking MB ( as my usage doesnt demand of the CPU) to .
I don't game as much, tbh I play World of Tanks occassionally and some old PC games like Company Of Heroes so I can skip not having a crazy gaming board.

Im currently shopping for a suitable case and CPU cooler and Im very rusty with my tech stuff now.
And yes the CPU probably is overkill for me.
Sorry for the long write-up

Your thoughts on anything on the build are greatly appreciated.

cant access trade.nz from my location - error 406

how much you paid for the parts?

what gpu you use?

if this is upgrade you don't need another psu, especially expensive with excessive power rating

There will be refreshed boards coming out in a few months, alongside refreshed CPUs from Intel, so there's that if you're going to swap boards later on.

DDR5 and NVMe SSDs should be a thing to get now or soon-ish at least, as the prices are at or very near rock bottom.

You going air cooling or with an AIO? That would help people suggest things.

I paid $580 for the CPU and $130 for the PSU.Both lightly used.

Its a new build so i will need the necessary parts and will buy a gpu later on as i will be selling my old PC.

Sorry I forgot to mention I am from New Zealand and I bought the items from our local trading site www.trademe.co.nz

hows this for mobo? should be cheap enough and leave enough money for ddr5 ram of your choice

Sorry for the late reply.I have been doing a lot more research on the build.Technology has improved so much with new lingo.

I will be going with aircooling to keep things simple.

Thanks for that suggestion,it looks good but probably too expensive, ill keep that motherboard in my mind.I got a growing list of boards that I am researching.
Tbh Im trying to keep the motherboard price under $NZ400.Unfortunately tech stuff in NZ is expensive.

With the build you are doing, you do want a decent motherboard for the i9-12900K you have. So, I would look at the ASRock B760M Steel Legend WiFi Micro ATX LGA1700 Motherboard (B760M Steel Legend WiFi) - PCPartPicker for 338.94 NZD and 32Gb of DDR5-6000 Corsair Vengeance 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL36 Memory (CMK32GX5M2D6000C36) - PCPartPicker 199.00 NZD.

For the case, I would look for one that comes with fans pre-installed to save you some money, like the Fractal Design Pop Mini Air MicroATX Mid Tower Case (FD-C-POR1M-06) - PCPartPicker in black or white Fractal Design Pop Mini Air MicroATX Mid Tower Case (FD-C-POR1M-01) - PCPartPicker 179.00 NZD

If you want to save a bit, you could always go with DDR4-3600, which is about as fast as DDR5-6000 due to timings. This is worth the read on the subject: DDR5 Memory Performance Scaling with Alder Lake Core i9-12900K | TechPowerUp.

DDR4 Motherboard...MSI MAG B660M MORTAR WIFI DDR4 Micro ATX LGA1700 Motherboard (MAG B660M MORTAR WIFI DDR4) - PCPartPicker 275.00 NZD and DDR4-3600 G.Skill Ripjaws V 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory (F4-3600C18D-32GVK) - PCPartPicker 138.99 NZD (This is close to what is listed in my System Specs in my profile.)

CPU cooler in both builds: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE ARGB 66.17 CFM CPU Cooler (PA 120 SE ARGB) - PCPartPicker 99.00 NZD.

Ther power supply you have should be fine to run the system with a decent video card, like a RTX 3080 or RX 6800XT.

thanks for your suggestions.I just spent the last two hours doing some research on those parts you mentioned and will do more.I'll wait till I pick up the CPU and PSU and start purchasing parts slowly.
This build might be a slower one as I do more research and wait for parts to arrive.

Cant wait to get it built,Im excited at the performance jump from my old sandybridge setup.

Your system specs disagree with that. X58 + i7-920 is by no mean Sandy. It's Nehalem.
I just edited the specs of my profile PC....I checked with CPU-Z and it did say Sandybridge Socket 1155 LGA

I assume those are New Zealand dollars, but anyway sorry IMO those are not a good purchases.

If you chose this socket you should be looking at 12400 - a good value and a big upgrade from i7-920. 12900k is pricey - you could have just took 13th gen, and you have nowhere to go, upgrade to 13th/14th gen is questionable, because this is so close performance.

850 watt psu - you plan to use 600 watt graphic card?

I agree 760m/660m is the most reasonable choice for lga1700. Considering those don't have pcie5 storage options and socket is being discontinued the most reasonable in general is am5.

You can wait on the other stuff if need be, but get ALL the nvme drives & ram you will need NOW, as the prices are at or near rock bottom, and as soon as the current channel inventories are depleted (30-60 days), (or the next factory fire/flood etc) the prices will start rising considerably :)

I just googled it, 580 new zealand is still 350 usd... that is too much imo.

I'd rather see him spend 350 usd on a brand 14700k new raptor lake refresh that comes out in October

the i9 12900k I bought, sold or sells for $NZD800 here which translates to $US485,that would be way out of my budget.I wouldnt be surprised if the 14700k cpu sold for $NZD1000 plus here.

Yes those are in NZ dollars and cheap for what they are.The i9-12900k sold for $800 new and you can still get used ones for $630 plus here.

I have already purchased the cpu and psu so theres no going back.I did consider the i5-12400 but thought its just better to get a better CPU for a bit more.

I plan to do that once I get the cpu and start the build.I thought tech prices had increased due to more components built for cars, smart phones and military hardware than computers.

What is the website you shop on for new Zealand and the price range you can afford for MB? Give those details and it will go quicker.

does new zealand not have a shipped and sold by amazon option? i feel like a new cpu like a 13700k would still only cost 350 usd there... and hence the 14700k soon enough. that is what i assumed, so that is what i recommended. perhaps they do not have an amazon, in which case nm

Go on PC Part Picker and set it to New Zealand, you will be shocked at how much things cost there. Thier prices are higher than Europe with the 22% VAT tax. o_O

Also, looking at the 14th gen Intel's, it looks like the only CPU that is getting an uplift is the 12700 series with 4 more E cores for a total of 8P/12E cores (28 Threads). The rest of the series changes are a bit more cash, a better DRAM base speed and controller and AI cores. So, I think the performance will be better but not a huge upgrade over the 13th series.

The 12900K is a good place to start, and you will be faster than 97% of the PC's that have run the 3d Mark Time Spy benchmark. We at least that is what Future Marke tells me when I run it with the system listed in my profile.

alot of things in nz is pretty expensive...

theres a website called pricespy that shows prices for most things from most stores, another called pcpartpicker and also a popular company called PBtech.I have been checking those sites out daily.
Also trademe is another site I check.
Amazon is okay but the costs are offset by the large shipping costs.Same with newegg, for the case,it costs $172.50 but to ship it here costs $232.00.

are you from nz too?prices for everything here are skyrocketing, thus why one reason I decided to upgrade before everything gets crazy expensive.

yes the prices are incredibly high.I have seen built i5 PC selling for $3k.Also check out trademe for computer tech too. Some of them stuff listed there are from Australia and its super expensive.

Yeah i was living in nz until 2018, it is crazy expensive atm because the country is going through a recession and most likely last until mid 2024 before things starts picking up again
i like buying from computer lounge because those guys are nice to deal with rma if anything goes wrong, but they are a tad more expensive than pbtech and other places..

Just do what I did: forget about CPU overclocking and get a H770 motherboard instead. I saved a lot by not going for the Z-series. The only thing was that there weren't many H670 models available when I bought, Idk if that got better with the 700 series.

Yeah, was going to mention this if he's interested in saving a bit of coin. The 12900k boosts nicely by default. Really no need to oc, especially if he's on 4K. They do run quite warm so a custom loop would be in order for any sort of decent oc.

He has the option to choose from B660, H670, Z690, B760, H770 & Z790 and unknown if there will be new revisions with Raptor refresh.

B-series seems a tad too cut back for my taste, but I guess it won't hurt to take a look at those, too.

I also constrained the TDP, so heat is really not an issue.

oh nice! what area did you live in?Yeah we are going through a recession plus I think its bad governance to some degree with increasing government costs to things that retailers pass onto consumers.
Computer Lounge and PB tech isnt far from me but never used computer lounge before. Two of the items I am interested in (in my search so far) are cheapest at computer lounge

Yes after much debate and lack of sleep due to it,ill forget about overclocking and get a B760 board instead.
