Metro Last Light: can't set any resolution above 2804x1577

2560x1440 is my monitor's (Asus pg279q) native resolution and desktop resolution. When I start the game, the highest resolution I can actually pick is 2804x1577. I never had this problem w/my old, trusty, crusty 1080ti, it only became a problem w/the 4090 (thanks Nvidia!). Directly modding the config files made no difference either. It's lousy because I finally have the necessary graphics horsepower to run this game at a much higher resolution w/SSAA.

Are you playing the Redux version? Have you tried unplugging your secondary display?

Go into Nvidia settings, activate DSR or DLDSR, set the % multipliers of which resolutions you need. If you don't want to use DLDSR, you can also set custom resolutions in the monitor settings.

Do you have NIS on ? try to reset your Nvidia drivers settings and/or not run the game in fullscreen window mode

I don't have a secondary display and I'm already using DSR, but Metro Last Light ignores any resolutions >= desktop resolution -- they're not a menu option to select.

@droopyRO, I don't know what NIS is.

Do you have AR set to 16:9?

There's no in-game option to set aspect ratio. The resolution issue is actually WORSE than I stated. The maximum in-game resolution available is 2177x1224. Could setting a compatibility mode help? All my other DX11 games work so why not Metro Last Light?

Have you tried hand editing the user.cfg file?

@cvaldes
Strangely enough editing the user.cfg file makes no difference. I set the resolution in that file and it's ignored when the game starts up.

Are you running DSR (Image scaling) in the nvidia control panel? The software driven scaling settings tends to break things.
I recommend disabling this if you have it enabled - some people swear by it, but i've found many games break like this where they can no longer work at the resolution/refresh they want to, and are locked to the same as the desktop

This can also occur if you're using windows scaling and run the game in windowed/borderless windowed mode as you've effectively shrunk your available space

I run 4K at 150% scaling which maths out to 2560x1440p, so windowed apps for me run much lower resolution and fill the screen, compared to fullscreen exclusive. This can be edited in the games .exe files compatibility settings, to ignore scaling and run the traditional exclusive method.

Yeah I was going to say the res you first listed is actually HIGHER then your native res. As you may know, it's simply not possible to play at a higher res than your native without DSR. So naturally I thought you may have been mistaken. Are you SURE ALL DSR factors are enabled and that you APPLIED them in NCP?

I've never had a problem with DSR or Metro Last Light. I also checked WSGF (WideScreenGamingForum), and their master games list shows that Metro: Last Light (has to be typed that way to find it) supports the various WS ARs fine, as well as high resolutions. That said, I have not searched for problems in MLL running high res WS in W11.

I'm still on W10, but if you register on WSGF and ask around about what it can or can't do in W11 regarding high res WS support, you may get a response from someone whom knows.

I'm on Windows 10 and disabling DSR didn't help. The maximum resolution is still only 2177x1224 and if you try to go higher it merely wraps around to the lowest res: 800x600, which was completely acceptable back in my CRT days.

With my 1080ti I could at least set the resolution to my desktop resolution: 2560x1440, now with my 4090 I can't even do that.

On steam tech support for Metro:LL there are other reports of reported resolution issues (i.e. where Metro:LL reports incorrect information about available resolutions so that people can't set the game to their native resolution).

Did you mean enabling it didn't help?

BTW, have you tried doing it via a file edit like so?

It could be the game is just not recognizing the 4090 and is causing it to revert to a lower res. File edits like these are usually my go to work around for such problems.

Thanks for that. R U on Windows 11? Maybe I'll try verifying the Metro:LL files/install. I can't help but notice you're NOT using DSR but DL. I had thought DL only worked w/titles which supported it?

@Frag_Maniac
Enabling/disabling Nvidia DSR didn't make a diff. -- either way the maximum resolution available is 2177x1224.

I have ALL DSR resolutions ticked in the checkbox, but in the Metro Last Light and Metro 2033 Redux I enable/disable "image scaling" in NVCP and that should disable DSR right?

The Metro: LL benchmark has the same issue, it'll allow me to select higher resolutions but the benchmark only runs in 2177x1224.

DSR works for ALL other games I have from DX9 titles (e.g. Left 4 Dead 2, GTAIV, Fear, Fear:perseus Mandate, FEAR 2) to DX11 titles (Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, GTA V, Dying Light, FEAR 3) to DX12 titles (Metro Exodus, Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition).

Very welcome. Yes, Windows 11. I only have the DSR settings shown in the screenshot with no other per-game settings changed in the NV control panel. This is the Redux version though. I haven't tried it with the original release.

I tried verifying the Metro: LL files and they came up w/some corrupted files, which steam has reacquired..................AAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNDDDDDDDDDD....
it made no difference I still can't select any resolution > 2177x1224.

Right now tested it as well, and same as the other guy I can chose resolutions up to 4K due to DSR being enabled. It's your system

(edit: yep I'm on Win 10)

Also just tried the original Last Light. 3840x2160 is also available.

Are you talking about MLL vanilla or Redux though?

I was going to say 80251, you might want to give Redux a try. It's $20 on Steam and might save you from further headaches with this. I also thought it was a better game to play, and it looks and performs better. If it doesn't fix the problem you can always get the under 2 hr refund.

And did you try an SFC scan to look for corrupt system files as well?

Redux, I don't have the Vanilla version here, but I would bet, same as the other guy, it will give me all resolutions I want. METRO is a graphics enthusiast franchise, it will not have these issues.

have you tried admin command prompt sfc /scannow

sounds like your windows is corrupted if you had steam file corruption, possibly your drive is dying too is sfc scannow doesn't work and if a clean install of OS and drivers doesn't work. I went through hell earlier this year with corrupted windows 11 install, turned out the usb flash drive that I was installing windows 11 with was corrupted, so I was installing a corrupted version of windows each time I was trying to fix an issue, took me ages to figure it out.

that flash drive is now dead, and I use a new one, and all my issues went away. lol i hope you get lucky and it gets sorted.

That resolution is a dead giveaway: something's messed up on your end. Try to find out who produces that resolution and you have your culprit.
