wallpaper engine is a known causer of problems, every time it changes the wallpaper it resets a bunch of the windows desktop, like recalculating what colours your taskbar and so on should be

You simply cant have wallaper engine doing active changes while gaming

Everyone has the issues with wallpaper engine on auto cycle mode.
Same issue exists with windows own built in cycling of wallpapers.
I think I understood what you mean. I have never enabled changing the color scheme through Wallpaper Engine, maybe that's the reason I never had a issue with that.

Edit:

I mean this function.

I've never had issues with auto wallpaper switching, but my Windows color scheme is always default white/dark. If I use a playlist then I always use this:

I know another game where there is a problem with HAGS, although HAGS may only be partly involved in this. It's Rainbow 6 Siege game, there's a flickering skybox and sometimes shadows. This only happens if play via DirectX 11 API, Vulkan API is working fine. If I disable HAGS (Windows 10/11) then skybox will stop flickering, but this only works for RTX2000, RTX3000 and RTX4000. If you have for example GTX 1060 your skybox will still flicker.

Report this please https://forms.gle/kJ9Bqcaicvjb82SdA

Also nvidia needs to know the affected settings for Tower of Defense, they are waiting on Neutro to provide them but more data helps.

Can you take screenshots of the in-game graphics settings used and email it to driverfeedback@nvidia.com? In your email, please also include which settings you have changed in the NVIDIA Control Panel from the default settings. Thank you.

HAGS being broken in that game is something the devs need to work on then, it would seem.

A lot of people have less issues with HAGS in 11 than 10 - as an example, HAGS works fine in VR titles in 11, but is a known problem on 10.

Didn't know that thanks. I was waiting for a good reason to upgrade to 11, i guess it's finally time :)

I'll give updates here about if it solved my hags problem with tower of fantasy once i'll have updated to 11

It comes up a lot in the stutter help threads here on TPU, when it changes wallpapers it forces WDM to refresh.
How bad it affects your system depends on a hundred variables, but the worst case is simply major stutter.
"Transparency effects" are created by windows when the wallpaper is changed as one example, because microsoft never intended for something to change the wallpapers while users are in fullscreen games.
Fire up a 3D game in windowed mode and manually change the wallpaper, and you can see if its happening to you.

It's something well known by this point, but trips people up a lot

They have known about this issue for almost a year, but unfortunately they could not do anything and simply removed this issue from the list. I already wrote about it to them. Nvidia incorrectly mark this issue, saying it only affected RTX 4090 and only Watch Dogs 2, although I sent them a report about it many times, and sent to Ubisoft as well :(

P.S Yesterday, author of this wallpaper said that he/she was able to fix the flickering of wallpaper. I can finally use that pretty tree wallpaper. But it's so weird that it was after installing 22h2 that some wallpapers started flickering like that. Maybe Microsoft changed something in MPO and it caused some wallpapers to flicker?

UPD: Unfortunately, latest update haven't helped me, I still see flickerings on this wallpaper :(

oh, then the R6 and WDL flicker has nothing to do with HAGS, Ubisoft are violating D3D11 spec.

Then the wallapaper is the issue, as they stated they have layers - and those layers are appearing over things they shouldnt (This is likely how it ties in with the MPO issue, over-layer, etc.

That sounds like a game issue for sure with R6

The trouble with HAGS is you can google it and find definitive proof it helps people at the same time proof that it harmed performance for others - it seems hit and miss, and it's hard to know if OS/driver updates fixed it for those who had it as a negative (W10 vs W11, for example)

1687579334668.png
1687579365195.png

This website re-tested in W11 months later, and that loss was gone - but was it W11 that fixed the issue, or drivers/game updates?
1687579594032.png

One review shows an 11% gain, while another shows a 42% loss in the same title - it may be a DX11 vs DX12 thing, but since the YT video didn't say which one they chose it's a tossup - but a great example of how one setting change affects how it can help or hinder

REBAR is the same, with some titles i believe

As for me, I wrote a long time ago. I did nothing and the problem fixed itself. I don't know if it's a Microsoft updates (there have been a lot of them lately), but I think it is. So far everything works! A little update from me. I hope it will work for you soon, And I hope that everything will be fine with me until the end :)

Again, sorry for my bad English - but I just wanted to let you know that everything works for me (I don't know how, but they had to fix it somewhere - some update).

I hope that everything will be okay in the end for you guys

I have been testing Opera browser in OpenGL mode for 2 days now. No more artifacts!
I will continue to test the browser and the next one will be Edge in OpenGL mode. I will write about the result later.

KsushaTeaKisa is right! It looks like the cause of the artifacts is the DX11 API in Windows version 22H2.

I noticed you are a newish member of the TPU community, I just wanted to say thank you for being so helpful in this thread, honestly it is nice to see new members being so helpful, especially about technical things.

I have no idea about any of this stuff and none of it applies to me, I don't use Opera, just wanted to say thanks for your kind posts here. Have a good rest of your weekend mate. :toast:

I did manage to solve my similar problem by switching from windows 10 to 11 with a clean full wipe install.

Dunno if my windows 10 was corrupted or not, it was 3 years old and not crash free. Or perhaps windows 11 HAGS management is just better.

Windows 11 does seem to solve some modern hardware issues, it recently fixed an issue so 1000hz polling mice don't cause games to stutter, which should have been fixed over a decade ago, but here we are... as far as I am aware Windows 10 was not patched for this. This is just one example of many.

that bug wasnt microsofts fault, it was programs (especially overlays) asking for raw directinput data when they didnt need it

11's HAGS is definitely superior, the VR world talks about that a lot

:( Unfortunately the issue from this thread is still not solved and I can easily reproduce it. Now I'm using a new 2K monitor with 170Hz and G-sync, but the difficulty of reproducing has not changed for me.

Fair enough, I know Hardware Unboxed/TechSpot did a video last year showing Windows 11 for x3d cache cpu's has better gains on Windows 11 versus 10, I should have used that example instead.

Dealing with the exact same issue
- RTX 3080
- Windows 11 22H2
- 536.67 and 536.99

This only particularly happens on Google Chrome and Steam, games are pretty okay, some websites will show artifacts more than others, but it's very random and usually 1-2 every 10 minutes, I have tried the OpenGL on Chrome for now, hopefully this fixes it.

The problem is exactly what you described - mainly dark youtube/facebook videos, only on high refresh rate monitor.
I'm not able to reproduce the problem on my second screen - 60hz, 1440p.
My main display (1440hz, 270hz) is flickering like hell in Chrome.

I'm using RTX 4070Ti.

First time i saw the problem was after updating Windows to (KB5029263).

Now I'm using a new 1440p monitor at 170Hz and due to the increased refresh rate of a display this issue has started to occur a lot more often than before with 75Hz.

Use the OpenGL API to avoid this. However, I don't have a fix for Steam / Discord or any applications using Chromium.

Same problem here, I'm using a rtx 3060 and 165 hz monitor. The issue is resolved with OpenGL in chrome. Thank you very much for sharing your experience, I was extremely worried!
Regarding steam, try disabling hardware acceleration, so far I haven't had problems with artifacts in the interface with some video after I disabled it.

Yes, can confirm that Chrome works fine with OpenGL setting.
At first i thought that the problem comes from undervolted gpu (undervolted for more than half year) but the artifacts/flickering occurs even with stock voltages and cores.

Looks like NVIDIA is not going to fix that fast :/

Nvidia still doesn't know the root of this bug, I think they should work with Microsoft to resolve this issue, I told Manuel about it but for some reason they still don't want to do it. Nvidia sometimes disappoints me, they are very reluctant to solve some issues, despite a lot of reports about it from different people.

Try altering yoru brightness/contrast settings
I've had this on low quality displays recently, even 60Hz ones

It only showed up with specific content on screen, like I'd open up a new tab or click some expanding item (Or inventory or menus in games) and i could go in/out and test different monitor settings til i got rid of it
