LG's 2023 Smart Monitors are Powered by webOS

We have LG appliances and there are problems with all of them!

I will never buy anything with WIFI garbage unless there is literally no choice and I'll still open the chassis up and remove the damned chip.

Man this thread is a real magnet for the conspiracy nutcases.

There's disapproving of googles stranglehold on the web, and then there's the absurdity of what's happening here. Quit giving sane privacy advocates like me a bad name.

I turn off at night but not because of tinfoil hat kind of stuff but due to power surges lol.
Still, everything goes dark at night, the enviromentalists will cheer me because I'm saving power, if you consider the 3 watts a modem uses actual power... welp

Mobo manufacturers started adding random bullshit to boards in order to justify price increases, then proceeded to gaslight "gamers" into believing Wi-Fi is unironically good and not a mess of a technology full of performance AND security flaws, heh whatever floats their boat I guess... wired FTW. In case of emergency simply pull the wire out. Wireless there's no way to fully disable unless you exclusively use nuggets you can pull out at any time, which isn't the case with gaming stuff, internet of bullshit appliances and the subject of this topic.... TVs, well, monitors, or screens in general.
Betcha there's no way to fully get rid of the Wi-Fi and 'smart' stuff without rendering the display useless, the fact a whole OS is needed just for it to work tells me that, no simple underlying firm on a ROM like in the old days, soft errors? override it or replace it, not like there was a lot to do when it came to soft other than electronic settings control... you know, as opposed to turning knobs or sliding in your favourite loooooooong flat head screwdriver through the back to blindly turn pots, but that's obscure knowledge ~ could go back a little more... valves anyone? you don't like the image? SHAME that's all you get lol

As for the other comment.... "superstonk", kek. Sure the text is fine but I can't take the cesspool that's reddit seriously.
On WIFI my point exactly. Even when the board is off as long as it has power you have no idea what code has been written into the driver.

Yes, let's see what the "google approved" articles have to say about how bad the corporate controlled media - that google controls - thinks of how awful and horrible and disgraceful the breakup of the previous strangler of information - AT&T - has had on society.

Wait, I will lose my job for mentioning this. Nevermind: All hail google. GOOGLE IS GREAT!

Meet the new boss, so different from the old boss.
I am not even American so you can try again. I am not an ardent supporter of Google. I am just someone that was aware in the 80s of what the propaganda was to make it happen. It is just like how some News outlets in the US like to say the economy is in trouble until the numbers come out and they act shocked that the numbers beat estimates. That is all part of it. Why do you think Free trade even happened and look what happened to Michigan until very recently. Now you have the acolytes of those 70s-80s televangelists telling people that Abortion is wrong in the eyes of God but rape and incest is fine and making up polls to think it is close until election night when their predictions all fail. These are some of the reasons I game. My family only survived it because my Father worked for the Military Industrial Complex and my Mom worked for the Red Cross.

Google is not a saint, they have intruded on my privacy to try to feed me Right wing propaganda about how bad/stupid "Woke" is on Youtube and make E-tailers bombard my email just for looking at a product. .

Getting back to WebOS as part of the Apple environment it has no interest to me as the most thing that made PC my hobby is the ultimate flexibility in everything that is DIY. That is against Apple's business model so. I hope it's not like Hisense that does not allow you to use a USB WIFI card on your Smart TV.

Dude I have no idea what you are going on about now but it sure is offtopic. (I've also never seen anyone seriously argue that the AT&T breakup was wrong so that's an impressive first)

LG having a smartOS in their monitors is the topic.

Can’t think of a single consumer upside to a smart monitor… not one.

Some people do enjoy the easier access to streaming apps and not having to use a second device.

I'm not one of them at all but I can see the appeal

Ooo, neat!
Can't wait for Monitor Malware

I'm of the (apparently rapidly vanishing) opinion that not everything on earth needs a TCP/IP stack, yeah.

Of course you can just not give it wifi credentials but still.

Yeah but isn’t why they have smart tvs? I mean the whole point of a monitor is you already have it hooked up to a computer which is going to be infinitesimally faster than some bloated, add-fest of a smart device OS that the monitor will have.

With the trend of work from home and mixed work and play setups manufacturers saw an opening to sell some extra "features". Some of these "smart monitors" might even support PiP so you can watch a movie during boring meetings that should have been an email.
