is there anyway to verify my motherboard actually has a gen5 gpu slot without a gen5 card?

Just go into the bios under pcie negotiation and select the drop down to see if it goes up to 5, no?
 
I just took these pictures off the back of the box... lol

and I know this isn't the B650e steel legend, because @GerKNG has that one and the main difference is the 16 power stages vs my 14. @AsRock do you work at asrock? cause im genuinely curious now :D

Mainboard Bus Specs PCI-E 5.0, but I don't know what it means by Bus Specs... lol (what does mainboard bus spec mean??? someone clarify this for me? referring to nvme or gpu slot?)

@W1zzard I think AsRock made a oopsie oopsie :roll:AMD going to be like, what you doing selling a B650e board as B650!!! tsk tsk tsk! I mean I love the board and am going to keep it, but yeah... this is indeed strange, cause its clearly not a mistake by AsRock, as mentioned before with Gerkng. but it is also violating AMD's layout for B650e vs B650 requirements... fascinating!

No not at all, how ever i did form the name AsRock for Diablo later becoming a way to name many chars in Diablo 2, so As being the name ( HAHA ) and the Rock was the main char name but was changeable to lets say Sorc, Barb and wizard for a couple of examples. As back then dail up and moving stuff to one to another char needed to be done asap.

All so my Name is AsRock and not ASROCK HAHAHAHA. ASROCK the company was started in 2002 :P.
 
Another way to kinda tell is looking at the back of the motherboard. PCIe 5.0 slots do not use through holes. They are surface mounted.
 
I second (or third?) the suggestion of checking PCI-E settings in the BIOS. It absolutely should tell you even without a compatible card present. For example, my 1070 is Gen3 only, yet in the BIOS it does show Gen4 in the settings for negotiation. Probably the most straightforward way. And yes, my SSD is Gen3 too, so now Gen4 devices are present at all.

Even if it turns out that it’s just Gen4, I wouldn’t worry. You’d be able to upgrade your GPU later without much issue. I have doubts that in just two generations we will have cards bandwidth hungry enough to demonstrate any significant difference between 4 and 5, even if they would support the latter. Even now, with the 4090, we’ve seen from tests by W1zz that the difference between Gen4 and Gen3 16x is mostly negligible.

I will look again, AsRock has hundred of submenus... so I will just go through each one until i find something that sounds like this. @GerKNG can you see anything like this in your BIOS? if so care to give me navigation tips so I don't have to spend an hour finding it? if not its cool, I will have a look later today.

Damn, I wasn't aware that PCIE gen 5 uses a SMD mount design, thanks for pointing out. I know that the signals used in gen 5 are heavy impacted by trace lengh and even gen 4 risers had been an issue.

I went to the PCI section, graphics sections, I never saw any setting, it always just said Auto, Enabled, Disabled for anything I clicked on... so unless someone else with a modern AsRock board on AM5 with latest BIOS can look for me and give me navigation details, I probably won't find it, I will try again though, maybe I will get lucky this time.



edit: I found it, I guess this is the only B650 non-e board to support gen5 gpu slot and gen5 nvme together. lmao so I guess AsRock just completely ignored AMD's guidelines :D

I mean even my X670 board in my specs goes up to 5 there, no one ever claimed the slot is 5.0 though.

edit: actually your right, your mobo doesn't say gen5 in specifications... very strange indeed your BIOS shows it... lol wth

edit 2: I find it strange a B650 non-e board has gen5 nvme and gpu slot that can be x16 at the same time, but a x670 board doesn't have a gen5 gpu slot at all. none of it makes sense, lol

I don't know why all the fuss, since all PCIe 5.0 comes from the CPU i/o chiplet with ZEN 4, and from the fall with ZEN 5 architecture. So, at least in theory, it wouldn't be a problem for all motherboards with an AM5 slot to get such specifications on at least the near-CPU PCIe and m.2 slots, if the manufacturer decided to enable them.

Gigabyte is different. "PCIe 5.0 ready" is just a statement about the supposed quality of the PCB to support its signaling. They say that about pretty much all their boards these days.

The PCIe 5.0 slot usually "looks" different even from the front. Thought ASRock's part is a little hard to tell. The one on Gigabyte's 4.0 x16 boards is very clearly more similar to what they used on their last gen boards.

well it's pretty cool mine has it anyway, I confirmed it in BIOS in the image, manual says it, back of box says it, website specifications section says it, etc. I am happy, my plan now stays the same, I will drop in 11800x3d and rtx 6090 in this board and those are only two upgrades I see making in next ten years. time to game and be done with this! :toast:
 

this new article from techspot doesn't even mention the unique mobo's like mine, I found that kind of interesting. ASRock has really created quite a unique mobo with the b650 non-e steel legend.

my plan is still the same, drop in 11800x3d and rtx 6090 when they launch and enjoy what i have until then
