My Motherboard/i7-13700 is beginning to fail after 1 year of use

So 2 hours ago i was playing ffxiv and my pc suddenly turned off for the first time ever. It turned off, and then turned back on. So i just run ffxiv again and on the menu my pc turned off again and then turned back on. Opened OCCT did a cpu stress test, turned off again. I first checked my 4090, thought it finally melted, nope it was clean and i even removed it and just kept the cpu and did another stress test and my pc turned off again. I swapped my psu from a 1000watts to a 850 watts that i had on my testing PC and it was the same thing still. Even removed my second nvme just to be safe. What fixed it was limit the CPU power to 150watts, i've had it with no limits for a year now and it can pull max 250watts, even limiting to 200watts still turns off my PC.

SO are i7's also failing and not just the i9's, or am i just unlucky and got a bad chip. I think its the latter but still wanted to let people how my troubleshooting experience went. I really think its either the motherboard or the CPU. But so far i'll assume cpu because my 4090 was pulling 600 watts for 10 minutes straight and didn't crash, but my cpu pulling 200 watts crashed in 10 seconds.
 
Interesting as you have a non-K i7. Though after these 13/14th gen problems, I wouldn't even be surprised.

Yup the Raptor lakes are dropping like the flies. Its not just the i9s. My first 14700k died within a month. My second is still going but its on a power budget and I've underclocked it. I don't really have enough money for another build as much as wish I could just switch to a next gen AMD :'(

You maybe could rma it and sell it? Though maybe intel would pull out the 'tdp is 125 and it works at 125 so there's no problem, have a nice day '
 
Thank God I have a way to RMA my KS if it happens to fail. But that's some exceptionally bad luck for a nonK i7 to fail

Nah i bought the PC prebuilt with the mobo and cpu then upgraded from there, and 1 year warranty is already over. I will keep using it until it completely dies though. I refuse to buy another raptor lake cpu.

But OP said that he/she has upgraded that prebuild (unless I understood something wrong). And tbh, K SKUs aren't that special anymore as there's practically no OC headroom, only better resell value than non-K versions.

Fixed just for you, i don't have any other mobos to test and im sure not paying for another 1700 mobo when i want to switch to am5 anyway. And as i said it can be the cpu or mobo and just sharing what happened to me not spreading bs or anything.

Never seen a prebuild system being sold with locked Intel Core i7-13700 and 4090 combo though...
Sorry i bought the pc a year ago prebuilt and changed gpu,psu and case thats it

CPU is probably just fine. I ran 13700K and 14700K on 2 different MSI boards, one of them DDR4 and the other DDR5.

The board shut off a couple of times, just as you described. Did all the testing and it was for sure the board ate shit. It's RMA as we speak.

The difference is, I was closer to 350w load. And both processors under DryIce. And DryIce on both boards. The DDR5 board just couldn't handle it.

Confirmed working cpu in a B660-G and the old DDR4 board before I made the RMA ticket.

I will exclaim it is extremely difficult to kill a processor. Don't look at my avatar then ask how I'd know....

My mobo do be acting weird sometimes, my 2nd nvme sometimes suddenly becomes unrecognized (happened twice so far) then i have to shut down and turned the pc back on for it to appear (restarting doesn't work) Also when i remove my network cable and put it back in the mobo it will not recongnize it too lol so i have to restart my pc again. I tested also without xmp the pc still turned off.

The m2 drive issue may just need ME update (bios and windows).

When I first got the MSI gaming wifi (ddr5) the board posted my 14700K at over 1.7v. Luckily I had my water loop installed. M2 and video card would only work in the second slot and M2 on the chipset. After flashing bios and ME, those issues went away.

The board can't handle the amp pull. Volt x amp = wattage. So it's not a v-core issue really. You restrict by amps and duration.

So now you just need to find a way to test either or both the board and cpu.

Under good faith, I could send you a 14100F (would require a bios update no doubt) and you can send the 13700. I can test the chip any fashion you'd like. Since it's locked, I can slap it in a spare B660-G motherboard. (I have 2 of them).

Lastly, it would be more cost effective to replace the motherboard than going to a slower platform. That's just my 2 pennies.

So you're saying if i want best gaming performance i should stick to intel and not get a 7800x3d/9800x3d soon ?

That's up to you.
Best gaming performance is an opinion. I don't game, I do competitive benchmarking. So I look at all data, not just FPS.

Since you have a 4090 and probably 4K gaming the cpu means less to FPS. So spending money on an entire platform rather than purchasing a board is completely up to you.

But if you do wanna ditch 1700, I may consider purchasing your processor if you where to sell it.
 
Honestly it seems like it could be either or in terms of CPU/MB especially given Intel has on going concerns over both the socket and CPU degradation. I really wouldn't rule out either scenario. I had to pick between the two based on symptoms described I'd honestly lean towards CPU degradation based on the pile of evidence pointing that direction. It seems less probable that it's MB failing then again, but then again they've had issues with the socket design and mounting pressure.

Can pretty much toss this into the possible degradation pile. There isn't a lot of data yet on i7 raptor lake chips and degradation though. They probably would degrade a bit slower than the i9's and i5's would degrade slower than i7's as well. There is also differences between Raptor Lake and Raptor Lake Refresh as well. We don't know enough about which factors are heavily leading to degradation. It's likely much to do with pushing P core frequencies over aggressively pushing up voltages that degrades the ring which utilizes the same voltage. It could also be other factors though since they increased cache size between Alder Lake and Raptor Lake and that might also be part of the issue.

every tiny bit of gaming performance i'ld like to have, but other than being the best for gaming, i want to try amd to get a feel of it myself since i've already tried intel for more than a year and i have no complaints about it except what happened today but again it might not even be intel's fault.

My next and kinda going to be "First" for real build (i built an old 2th gen intel cpu pc just cuz i wanted to try building a pc, i used it to test old gpus) is a 5090 and a 9800x3d (if it turns out its better than 7800x3d) and the current PC i got i might sell the 4090 and just gonna use it to record music, so can't sell it to you sorry.

It's OK, I prefer OC unlocked processors. But I always seem to find a use for them or someone that could need it later.

9800X3D should be a bit faster than 7800X3D. At least I'd hope so for the prices.... but nobody can see the future, and reviews are generally with unreleased boards and very early bios revisions.

So AMD cpu is cheaper than Intel, but the boards are usually more expensive. So the cost evens out.

I stay away from AMD. After 4 generations of disappointment from their processors.... I'm just not interested personally. I stuck with them through the FX times and Phenom and Athlon. Since socket 462 essentially. In 2017, I moved to Intel. Couldn't be happier. 8700K smoked everything AMD had to offer at the time and after. 2700X couldn't touch it. I skipped 3000 series due to high failure rates and memory incompatibility. BUT, I'm not fond of Atom cores on my cpu either. Lol. To each their own I guess
 
I'd try lowering the ring ratio to something a good bit lower like x35 and see if stability changes. The limits have a lot less to do with stability situation than the current amperage, but should be adjusted a bit relative to amperage.

I could go to a computer store and let them test the cpu to know once and for all but i really can't be asked, as long as its working now even if it loses some performance. Just hopefully it holds out until my next build

Who knows maybe i end up preferring intel we will see.

I am fairly new to the PC world, i only just started with my first pre built in last year that a friend forced me to buy (I gamed on a ps5) and i realized PC's are what were missing in my life haha. I still have a lot to learn but im always looking forward for PC stuff. I've even been building a gpu collection. gpus interest me more than cpus lol. and I love to OC them
 
Yeah at least see what arrow lake is all about.... This generation if it is failing at a higher rate is an outlier for intel and their new stuff is on TSMC 3N apparently at least the high end maybe this is why....

I was pretty underwhelmed by the 7800X3D and my 7950X3D you have to jump through a bunch of hoops to get it always performing better than the 7800X3D in game, I would wait for 9000X3D or arrow lake for sure though.

I've been overclocking since 07. There's quite a bit to learn for sure. All the different platforms and such.

For reference, a stock 13700 would be like running a 6700K at like 6.5ghz give or take.

It's fun. I like the hardware modifications and different cooling methods. Benchmarking is like drag racing computers. Most people here are not into such adventures. But this isn't exactly an OC forum.

The processors today don't overclock like they used too. Last night I ran an 85% overclock on a Xeon 5675 that was lent to me for competition. What a rush. Just wish I had more than 7 pounds of DryIce, but that's what the store had left.

Intel are planning to limit the multiplier in an update apparently, in an attempt to circumvent their current issues with the 13th and 14th Gens.

Yours might be fine, but there is issues with some Intel CPUs and they are trying to find the exact cause.
Oxidisation has been suggested.

Specifically just Raptor Lake right?

13600KF OCed but not extreme cooling. Sold to @bobbybluz and I'm sure he's got it overclocked.
13700K Has been overclocked a little bit, was shipped to @Mr.Scott for more overclocking and torture. (extreme cooling a few times.)
14100F Obviously can't overclock it, But I did some benchmarking on it and it's a hell of a fast quad core with HT.
14700K Essentially another fast CPU but with added area efficient cores. This one killed a motherboard. Cpu tests fine. (extreme cooling several times)
Have not purchased 13/14900K/KF/KS processors for even more area efficient cores. This is not a turn on for myself personally when I ask my wallet how it feels after purchasing just the 4 above not including the Alder Lake chips I've had/have.

So if anyone would have had or has a problem with oxidization, I'd know first hand I guess. Have had to clean my socket with shots of brake cleaner (non chlorinated) due to some funk on the pins. Even a dab of thermal paste in the socket. so forth.

Perhaps some builders just need a good re-seat of the CPU. This has been a thing for 2 decades where some memory channels may not show up to complete no posts, boards warping from too tight mounting devices and the list goes on and on. But lets act like this is new issues to LGA socketed motherboards I suppose.

I'll watch the video again more closely. I will be honest and skimmed it really quick. Just because if there was going to be an issue with degradation, I'd see it very clear first hand. My problem is I have not. And the other people on my HW benchmarking team also seem to have no issues despite very many multiple runs under LN2 which is colder than I go with DryIce. Thus my team mates ARE benchmarking in the 8ghz neighborhood. Mine have topped out at 7ghz on DryIce.

I'm just giving simple facts from personal experience and what my buddies are accomplishing. Which is well beyond the realm of GN.

You know? This just reminded me of the bending issues with LGA1700. I genuinely wonder how many of these malfunctions are mechanic in nature, if the CPUs are sparking a microscopic arc while in-socket due to the crappy ILM design. So many possibilities.

Even on the Apex Encore, the first thing I did was remove the stock ILM and install my Thermalright frame. I do not trust this ILM, even on a quality motherboard, which, mind you, despite being chock full of super high quality components and having pretty much the best of the best in trace quality and everything - seems rather flexible to me, to a degree I was actually uncomfortable with while handling it. I definitely expected an $800 motherboard to be sturdier than this one is.
