Dream Monitor Ideas

I went straight from 1080p to 4K, first I got a 4K60 monitor and later a 120Hz one. The 60Hz one serves me as 2nd monitor and I use that for media.

1080p144 in pivot too on the left side just for a dedicated Discord monitor :D

I dunno. I’ve sat through that review and it sounds like sake oil. Not removing (or de-mattëing) the coating seems like a big no to me, boosting the brightnee seems implausible to me, though it would depend on how it’s measured. (It’s to be expected that matte coatings would scatter the light a bit.)

I have seen glass in person, as I mentioned in a previous post in this thread - not this glass mind you - but this glass is better than the one I saw, and I 100% noticed an increase in sharpness (its like getting a free 10% bonus to resolution), increase in contrast, colors popped more, etc. so this is def not a scam - but Dough which used to be Spectrum Eve has a rough history with customer service, so I am not willing to try it anyway until another monitor maker brings it to market, hopefully this time direct to panel glass

I just jumped from a 1080p 144hz to a 4k 240hz oled (can't even tell *cough*) and my secondary has been a 60hz 4k for a while.

Gotta have discord @ 144hz so you can real time trash talk in.

you seriously can't tell a difference??? i'm slightly worried you aren't changing display options or something, OLED is 100% night and day difference in gaming immersion.

I'm still on 1080p as my main. I have a few display that I used; on main, laptop, retro gaming respectively:

27 inch curved VA panel 165Hz 1080p
15.6 inch IPS 144Hz laptop 1080p
23 inch 5:4 IPS 60Hz 8-bit panel 1600p
15 inch TN LCD 1024x768 75Hz
17 inch CRT 1024x768 85Hz

I'm not picky about monitors, and I can go back and forth between different refresh rate. Yes, I can see the difference, but I can adapt quickly.

My dream monitor? I might go OLED but I won't upgrade the resolution. I cannot justify buying graphics card that costs way too much just to run at higher resolution. I might just go with 15 inch 1080p OLED portable monitor, on my main. And I don't run multi monitor. There isn't any small OLED monitor for desktop, all of them priced close to my month salary.

i don't think they make OLED 1080p monitors, probably never will at least not high refresh good quality ones, you can get like 15.6" oled 1080p high refresh, but they have worse quality and latency. not a proper monitor so to speak.

I don't need high end monitors either, but I also know the immersion would be increased if I had one, so eh

Ever since 1080p can run on iGPU nowadays it considered as 'low end' so there aren't any manufacturer gonna make any proper ones for it. I found that 15.6 inch OLED portable monitor you mentioned but...yeah maybe you right it's not a proper monitor.

I found a 22 inch FHD true 8-bit panel made by Xiaomi maybe I just buy that one. VA color space is kinda weird to me, even after tweaking I can't get the proper tone on it, I need to use the 'black boost' to the max to eliminate any sort of ghosting in dark areas when gaming, that upsets the gamma and color balance.

it's a pisstake SL, (hence the *cough* part)

I can ABSOLUTELY tell the difference, and give my eyesight is trash the dot pitch is the limit of my vision (which I think is ideal)

I put it in trueblack400 mode (as opposed to HDR1000) which leans into less overall brightness and better low light detail accuracy (so it's not as bright in essence) then turned the brightness down to 1/3 of the slider and it's still got more pop than the monitor I had beforehand.

Gaming immersion isn't relevant yet (esports trash title junkie here) but I'm going to have a whirl with D4 with the levels set and see how that looks soon. Media content has been better to watch even sdr content and less taxing on my eyes (not sure about why with that one other than as above the shift away from a curved screen, I mean it could just be because it was a crap panel before)

On the 1080p oled monitors front, might not be made but the dual mode WOLEDS do it @ 480hz which could be what some people want, but 32" might not be the desired size there

yeah, VA is hard to get right, there are only like three good VA panels, one is a high end Samsung VA panel 240hz 1440p, and the other one is a new one from MSI called Rapid VA and has 5000:1 contrast ratio, no ghosting at all, hence the Rapid VA tech (yes I own this monitor) it was only $160 brand new. it has no issues that old VA panels have, and its the first dedicated gaming monitor to have 5000:1 contrast (tv's have had 5000 or higher for a long time but they were never good for gaming), this new Rapid VA tech from MSI is actually badass, I just wish they used a glass screen, it would make it so damn perfect. DAMN THESE COMPANIES FOR NOT UNDERSTANDING!!!!!

I got my dream monitor yesterday, a Dell Alienware AW2725DF 27-inch 1440p 360hz qd oled. It was $1011 cdn including tax. Oled is amazing. Only downside is it has to be babied to prevent burn-in. I only use it for gaming and a different monitor for web browsing etc.

No it doesn't. That's an old wives' tale from ancient history.

That's like saying you have to check your car's tire pressures every couple days because tubes leak. Essentially every OLED TV and monitor made in the last 10 years have built-in image retention mitigation features. And with each new generation of OLED technologies, those features are greatly enhanced to mitigate those potential issues even further.

You essentially have to "abuse" a modern OLED TV/monitor to create permanent burn-in problems. You do NOT have to "baby" it to prevent them.

Yes, retention is still possible - but that typically is when used in a scenario like airport flight information displays, ATM machines, and the like where much of the exact same image is being displayed 24/7/365.

Read your manual. Note on page 64 where it talks specifically about image retention, and how, "Pixel Refresh" is automatically activated (next time the monitor goes into sleep/standby mode) after 4 hours of use. To prevent permanent retention caused by static content (news channel or bank logos, for example, of fixed taskbars), "Panel" Refresh is automatically activated after 9,000 (yes, 9 thousand) hours of use. Does 9,000 hours sound like babying? That is more than a year.

That monitor also uses Pixel Shifting. This function, when it detects the exact same image has been displayed for extended periods, "shifts" the displayed image 1 or 2 pixels left, right, up, or down. This is all that is needed to change what each pixel is doing.

And remember, there are over 3.6 million pixels on that monitor so you are not going to see this shift.

My advice?

1. Do NOT dink with the default settings. Leave them be.
2. Enjoy your monitor - you got a great one!

GO big, or go home (& play with yourself)....

After moving thru the progressions from various combinations of 24" to 27", 32", 40" & finally 2x 43", + 1x 32", I will NEVER go back to small monitors, eva !

But I work on my 'puters but don't do gamz, so that's just me :D

I bought a 55' TV to use as my monitor it was 4K 60 and I loved the picture. Then I bought a 32QC as it was 165z. The downgrade in resolution to 1440P was not seen as the screen was much smaller. Then we got COvid and had to work from home. They offered us $250 to buy anything we needed. The 32Qc was not conducive to work due to the curve. I started looking around and found (Gigabyte is my go to for monitors) the 49" OLED and 43" Mini LED. The OLED was 4K 120hz but I already have a TV that does that so I went with the Mini LED. After getting it I went into AIDA and was shocked to see a pixel density of 138.

The distance you sit from your screen should be the primary factor in determining the size monitor (or monitors) you get. Bigger isn't always better.

Monitors are like shoes, cars or anything else. It is all about your use case and desire. Bigger also means more Windows open as well. I have a 7000D Airflow and before that A Phanteks Enthoo Pro 2. That means I had the regular Pro first. Before that it was the Thermaltake Level 20. That means that you already know I like big cases. The same principle can be applied to monitors. Just look at those Sim racers with 3 55" inch screens acting as one.

A 57 inch Samsung G9 that a GPU can't match(DP 2.1) but I read an RTX4090 will at 120Hz with excellent results and 240Hz at 5120x1440. Wait on RTX5090 or no? I ruined my 49 inch G9. It was me. I dunnit:banghead:

True. I had glasses made for near vision using 49 inch Samsung G9 for MSFS2020/DCS. Reading 5120x1440 can be a problem but fine in sims. Want 57 inch G9 7860x2160/RTX5090 DP2.1 support

That's not necessarily a good thing, or important. You can put a lot of open windows on 2 x 24" monitors. And many folks are very comfortable minimizing open apps, popping them to the screen as needed. Millions do this all the time with tiny laptop monitors.

And of course, more running apps uses more resources.

That is why you have a modern beast that can brute force it all. 32GB is now the minimum for power users. If you are into PC how can having more space be less rewarding. My daughter likes to use my Gaming laptop but I can't let her again use my 4K TV to play Games as she loves the colours. Her TV is my old 4K 60Hz Hisense and that has very low brightness and is not Mini LED.

Of course everything I said is my opinion as the PC is just that your Personal Computer that you can put whatever combination of brand to get the KB, Mouse, MB, GPU, CPU,RAM and Storage. Your post seems to remove Display from the equation and cement it at 27". I have had multi screens but nothing compares to one big beautiful display. Those Webb images are sweet as a Desktop background.

LOL

And I remember when 64Kb (as in kilo) of RAM was "more than we will ever need".

LOL LOL

Sorry, but you clearly have tunnel vision, seeing only your preferences as the only way that makes sense to compute.

Don't get me wrong - I've been using a multi-monitor setup since W98 because I wanted more space. But note that is primarily horizontal space. I don't mind moving my head back and forth, back and forth. But up and down and up and down too? No thanks.

I keep those monitors on 'good list of VA panels' thanks :) Talking about dream monitor is there any actual monitor that uses glass nowadays?

For the medium term future, 42" 2160p 240Hz glossy QD-OLED, preferably with a moderate curve. I'll also accept a good mini LED QD-VA if it helps bring the price down to a 3 digit number within the next decade. I'm probably gonna be using my old G7 for a long time still...

I am considering getting this... its not OLED, but the gorilla glass really does improve black levels a lot. Hmm, best to be patient, but I am tempted with this price.

Go on you know ya want it :p

nah I am going to wait for OLED and 32" 4k is the sweet spot anyway. this is the cheapest i have seen any gorilla glass monitor though, which is why i am slightly tempted. but i will be patient.

I just got an email about an hour ago from Dough. 480hz OLED QHD panels are shipping from them soon. They have a pretty good track record recently, I am very very tempted...

GIVE ME THE GLASS!!!! no other companies are giving me the glass, so this may be my stop. people don't realize that glass makes it just slightly sharper than regular QHD, its so damn perfect.

I think this is my stop lads, I just... can't stop myself... I always felt this was the perfect size for 1440p, but wanted it just slightly sharper, and 480hz OLED and all the other benefits from the glass and latest panel... I don't see a better price coming for a long long time. So, yeah I think this is it for me lads, its been nice knowing y'all, I see no reason to post here further, I am heading to heaven lads!
