hello my gpu is a 4070ti, i play games in 2160p and in VR, do you suggest me to buy a ryzen 7600 or a 9600x? i plan to change the cpu with a x3d when the prices will go down, or maybe with next cpu gen on am5 (10xxx), what you suggest me? the difference of price is about 60euros

Keep your current system until the CPU you want comes out, don't buy an interim model.

well i need a better cpu now, actually i have a 6600k
7800X3D OR if you are american go Micro Center and get a 7600X3D. Anything modern will murder that 6600K.

i'm in europe, yes the 7800x3d is a better choice but actually price is high
Get a 7600 and save up for a X3D. You have all the AM5 mobo, ram and so-on?

no, i have to buy, but i play in 2160p and fps are the same at this resolution so better choose a less exensive cpu for now
i will buy a msi tomahawk b650 and 16x2gb ddr5 6000mhz cl30 corsair

Be a good little system.

It is, but its worth it, and the 9800X3D isn't coming down to sanity pricing (either) soon.

Its really quite beautiful seeing top end CPU gaming perf on a mere 60W of power in your OSD :)

the fact is that in 2160p also this fastest processor 9800X3D has similar performance with a 7600 or a 7800x3d

Today, and depending on what content you play. I can totally bring my 7800X3D on its knees in 3440x1440, and its not related to graphics.

But yes it is plenty fast. The situations where it struggles is where all other CPUs go below 10 FPS; this one will do triple that in such cases. (Build/defense simulators, 4X, grand strategy, etc.)

see here
the difference between a 9800x3d and a 7600 is about 3.6%

Yes, based on the benchmarks ran on the TPU benchmark system. There are no sim games in there.

Not saying the 7600 is slow, but its a completely different CPU for gaming. You should be looking at the outliers in such a review - look at the games at 1080p where the x800X3D CPUs pull ahead of everything else. There are substantial gaps there, up to 20%, and that's still not counting any of the hardest CPU hitting games out there.

CPU performance is a metric that you cannot tweak. You either have enough, or your performance nosedives in the places where it gets hammered. Its just that simple - benchmarks tell you half the story at best for gaming purposes.

yes in 1080p there is so much difference, but i don't play in 1080p

Then you should buy a 7600 and eventually find yourself upgrading sooner rather than later. The choice is yours, I can only provide advice based on my own experience.

Those 1080p tests should be read as a look into the future for your 4K situation - if you upgrade your GPU, you will have more frames at 4K and bump into CPU limitations; if you dial back settings at 4K, you will also lean more heavily on your CPU and there are also plenty of games that want CPU much more so than GPU.

If you read the text in the review you will see the mighty W1zzard also mention the purpose of the low resolution testing, and say similar things.

The framerates on 4K with a 4070ti should not be super high. I would pick a 9600x, but it has 6 cores so it wont help you much in cores intensive games

dlss and frame generator are important
The question is, do you really want to depend on that stuff. The support won't be everywhere for it. It isn't today either, heck its missing from the overwhelming majority of games! It gets added to new releases, true. And I can tell you if you need FG because your CPU is not fast enough otherwise, the game will STILL play like absolute shit because the latency is still there.

If you play on a 4070ti you're pretty much in high end territory - get a high end CPU to match that. Its really the only and best advice I can give you. CPUs last for a long time, the initial expense will pay itself back thrice over. My last good gaming CPU was an 8700K - I had 6 years of fun with it, and it can still go along fine, but limits the GPUs of today too much. That's exactly what you will run into if you upgrade from your 4070ti to something faster - you'll be upgrading your platform AGAIN.

In other words, not getting a solid gaming CPU on a solid gaming system, is penny wise pound foolish.

It all depends on your disposable income, really.
True, but then its really a better choice to save up just a little more. Such patience really does get rewarded.

4K and VR or 4K VR?
I had one 4K VR Macbook Pro gamer friend....Read that again.

He was able to balance Radeon Pro 5700 graphics with an i9-9000 series hogging all the voltage even when shutting off half the cores.
I only care for 1080p144 desktop and got better frames than he did when upscaling 2K but that's from a 580.
If you're set on 4K with good frames, take either of those choices and look for an instant 300-400% performance scale.

Looks good to me.

Don't forget that most reviews run 4K at Ultra Settings. CPUs can separate at 4K high. It is all about how much data the CPU feeds the VRAM. As an example my 7900X3D feeds my 7900XT 3-5 more GB/s in all Games. That in turn makes the GPU run faster, If you are concerned I would get the fastest CPU with the most cores I could get. If you play Games like City Skylines 2 you will feel a weaker CPU at 4K.

At 4K differences between most recent CPUs are vanishingly small and VR is GPU bound, 9600X/9700X will be good enough.

dgianstefani: Laugh all you want if you doubt me buy a copy of City Skylines 2 and run it at 4K. Let me know what happens when your population reaches over 800,000 and tell me what 90% CPU usage looks like between 8 cores and 12 cores. That is why people that play Strategy Games and RPGs love using chips like the 5900X. You already know that there are a maximum of 50-60 Games that all reviewers use. You used to include TWWH3, remember? When the Community said that TWWH performance is best realized in a 4X4 Battle where your CPU matters it fell off. I know you are part of the narrative but it is the truth that 4k native is highly taxing on the CPU and GPU. I am not even going to get into how SAM and Rebar also aid when Gaming at 4K. You have (the Tech media) have established the narrative that no CPU matters at 4K but I have more than 50 Games in my library and most of them are Strategy or Racing Games. How many of those are reviewed by the tech media?

9600x. 60€ for one item might feel like much but you'll be moving to a completely new platform. The 9600x3d is said to come Q1 2025, so that might be worth waiting for if you want to wait for that long.

I say go with the 7600. At 4K/VR, you’re primarily limited by the GPU. Even if you encounter some CPU-bound scenarios in select titles or intermittent skirmishes, the 7600 is powerful enough to handle modern demands. I’m sure you’ll be looking to upgrade the graphics card long before considering a 3D model on the same platform.
