I got a call from my ISP, my Internet will be pure fibre on Sunday. I look forward to using my new HTPC to watch DAZN and Fubo over WiFI 6 and not worry about my TV only supporting Wifi 5. I am interested to see how my Asus Wifi 6 router will perform if connected to a faster hub. from 50 mb/s theo to 1.5Gb/s. That is like the jump from HDD to SSD but with networking. Even plugged in should be much faster now too.

Wish I got the same call from my ISP. They physically can't connect me to anything faster than 100 Mbps because gonzos from my block ruined the infrastructure. 2025 incoming, yet I'm still hard chilling at speeds only normal for the trollface and nyan cat era.

Your experience will definitely change. Congrats.

Max I get is 70meg. I dream of fast downloads.

You know when you go to someone's house with faster Internet to hang out. I went to my Cousin's for a boxing match and the first couple fights ended early so there was a ton of filler. I decided to download City Skylines 2 and was blown away at the WIFI speed. Same thing for my Sister.

Good old times when I had a 512k cable and my friend had 2Mbit ADSL. Used to download a lot of stuff there and transfer them to myself via an USB flash drive.

That was hella fast at one point :D
Yeah, since some people still used dial-up 56k modems, funny how still the early 2000s interwebz wasn't that demanding so it was somewhat usable anyway. :D

Huh? You think those were the good old times? LOL

Kids.

300 baud - now those were the good old days. Note that article is talking about the good old days. Now check out the date of that article.

I was in heaven when I upgraded to 1200 baud.

There was no good ol' days, there only were little kids excited about everything.

But yeah, today's web sites are so limited in their usefulness. Much more marketing and politics than anything else. Sad but whatcha gonna do, this happens to everything that becomes accessible and popular amongst everybody.

Out of all the things you should worry about your TV not supporting WIFI 6 is waaayyy down. Also, what does this mean? "Pure fibre"? What were you on before?

I'm currently on 250/250, because I got it on a deal. When it's over I'll go back to 100/100. I have zero benefits, apart from faster downloads which isn't important to me. I mean sure it's cool being able to download those big games so fast, but it's also ... far down on the list of things I care about.

I am on dual copper. That is the fastest you can get on Copper. Pure Fibre means a Fibre cable is connected directly to my home. It goes to an FPPA that is beside the bus stop and then goes to the Switching Center that is about 1 km away from where I live, all on Fibre. In the Switching centre the evolution of WDM is connected to my phone number to give me Fibre Internet, TV and Home Phone. In terms of WIFI. 5 is fine for watching videos but live sports does not stand still. Fubo and DAZN both offer full 4K streaming of live sports and IMSA live streams all of their races in 4K on Youtube.

That's really the ONLY tangible advantage to faster interwebs.

My FTTH connection got up and running a month ago. Its quite something to see 130GB of game downloaded in 20 minutes. But that's really all it gives. Nothing else is any different from my 50 mbit ADSL I had prior.

It means Fiber To The Home, potentially capable of 8 GBit/s, but most of the time you get some order of a Gbit unless you pay a lot more. I do know I'm going to lower the speed after the first promotion year is over, 1Gbit/s is just so unnecessary. Even half is way overkill

In terms of Wifi, just don't lol, ethernet cabling = epic win. Latency is so much better. Reliability is not even a contest. I've got everything on top level wifi and its still not even close to cable in responsiveness/reliability. Anything that needs realtime viewing is cabled here.

FTTH is what I'm after. I've never had decent internet and I fancy trying some basic streaming. 20gb takes about 1/2 hour. Not good enough. 200 down and 100 up would be fine though.
I know my area doesn't support FTTH yet and I can get 80meg for an extra £15 a month!!! They must be high lmao

Not when you live in a crowded flat and ISPs don't gajuple your connection just because you're too poor to pay for dedic lines for everyone in the house. I'm often limited to sub 30 Mbps because my bros also use this web actively. Would love to upgrade but ISPs got nowhere to put their equipment to do so.

Unfortunately the wife will not let me drill a hole in the floor to run the Ethernet cable so I am restricted to Wifi. I do know exactly what you mean though. I also have a couple PCs going so WIFI is kind of the only way unless I run something through the house.

I guess the question was more akin to "did your ISP call you out of the blue and tell you they're upgrading you to fibre" which sounds incredibly strange to me.

You say that as though that is a minor thing. It is true that download speed, by far, is the most important thing for the vast majority of users. For sure most of us want our webpages to "snap" open and music and video streaming to happen in real-time without any buffering.

But there's reliability too and there are a few who require fast upload speeds.

That said, download speed is not the "ONLY" tangible advantage. More bandwidth is NOT just about speed. Capacity is also a HUGE "tangible advantage" for many. Just ask anyone who has 2 or 3 streaming teenagers in the house, and a better half who's trying to run her business.

Sorry m8 but it's just daft. What next? No freezer because it's intrusive? A footballer doesn't school a surgeon on how to massacre cure the patients.

Same. Im lucky to pull 90meg on a good day. But I have been to places where 500-900mb was the top speed.

For this very same reason. My dad used to take his old laptop or an external hard drive to work and spend most of his shift just downloading tv shows in the background

I work in technology and was aware of what was going on. I live in a Townhouse Complex with 110 units and about 3 months ago every single unit got a Fibre cable run to their backyard. The Federal Govt where I live gives huge subsidies for fibre to be implemented. They left a letter in the mail for you to respond to online to request the service and thus a phone call was given if Sunday between 8 to 12 would be good to install my my network. I was offered 3 different speeds but they were all less than what I was paying before. I picked 1.5 for now.

The trick is to drill through the floor into wall between the studs. Then use an Ethernet wall plate. More work but definitely worth it.

Yes because you have never had field mice in your house either. The internet is not the fulcrum of my PC experience but single player Gaming and some MMOs like Aliens Fire Team.

That is too much work just Game lol.

So it's not the wife but the pests situation. Should've said that from the start.

Listen, my wife is Jamaican. If you think you can brow beat them into something that does not make common sense you are mistaken. Besides, I love fried fish, Curried Goat and all the other things that she cooks and she is the mother of the most precious thing in life to me my daughter. So yes I don't want to get the slap in the head when I am sleeping as the most shocking thing about mice is how heavy their feet are.

We lived in a place where the local plaza changed where the Grocery store was and an entire Colony of Mice migrated to our complex. It got to the point where I had Sonic inhibitors, stick tape ,mouse traps and sticky paper. It was an ordeal. The worst though was the sound of the feet at night. Mice carry diseases that are communicable to humans so no thank you. As I said I have several PCs in my space so WIFI is good and WIFI 6 is good enough for that purpose. Thing is that now I am going to have 2 WIFI 6E networks. Too bad AMD botched X870E as I would love the 320 mhz clock on WIFI 7. Just like how WIFI 5 is 80 mhz and 6 is 160mhz.

I have about 100 MBps download and 10 MBps Upload->Swedish&Finnish Operator Telia has decided that this maximum speed of VDSL2. This is not maximum speed of VDLS2. I know that distances matter in case of VDSL, but fiber is in this building's cellar. I have about 30 meters to DSLAM.

At least this building is under going waterpipe renovation and at least there will be some RJ45 connectors in apartments. I wish they would do like finnish building specifications are today. Which would mean fiber to every apartment. But I can only hope.
