Take your time! Get well soon! I have an idea for the cooling solution. The StraTech card has two holes at the end, 40 mm apart. I will use these. I have designed a draft for a frame, and my acquaintance will manufacture it next week with his 3D printer.

Hello!! wow I do hope you can help me, I thought this was going to be easy but i have spent the last week trying to get my old x58 motherboard up and running with a new nVME drive.

So the information
Gigabite EX58 Extreme rev1
I did already upgrade it using the custom bios for this board but I still don't see the harddrive in the boot section.

Yes, in many cases that would be the best solution. However, for me, it’s not possible due to lack of space.

So I have attempted to mod my own bios to add my NVMe controller SSD to the already modded bios for my mobo Gigabite EX58 Extreme rev1

As i said before i had already flashed my bios with this:
2022/Gigabyte GA-EX58-EXTREME NVMe SSD BIOS MOD
EX58EX.13S

So I know that bios works but just dosn't contain my correct controller vender and device.

So looking around on the fourms I have followed >this post<

Download the universally usable NVMe Option ROM. and added my VenderID 2646 and my DeviceId 5013
.\OpRomCfg.exe NvmeOpRom.bin 2646 5013
Option ROM configured successfully.

I Then added took NvmeOpRom.bin and renamed it 2646_5013.rom

Then i download the CBROM_155.exe (because i have a Gigabite) and then inserted my new rom file into the EX58EX.13S (renamed to EX58EXBS.13S)
.\CBROM_155.exe EX58EXBS.13S /PCI 2646_5013.bin

I Then saved the new mobo bios EX58EXBS.13S to a USB stick and flashed my bios using the F8 flashing utility on the mobo.

...... but my NVMe drive is still not showing up in the boot menu in the bios.

Did i forget to do something?
Do I need to remove any of the PCI ROM[x] roms from EX58EX.13S
Or did i get my Vender or Device incorrect?

Well You have mixed the method .
If you take a look in your screenshot about bios component the PCI ROM which you inserted is 7.5 kb and all other is 17.5 kb this is due different NvmeOpRom you use .
I mean there is two "main "method one for Asus Board and another for Gigabyte board .Don't mix them .
Stick with Gigabyte because you have that kind of Mobo. And follow step by step @MrPanda guide .
Personally i have an asus board .
From my understanding you have to extract/release one pci OpRom existing in your bios . Modify this .After insert this modified in your bios again .
But again I am not very comfortable with Gigabyte Mobo
I play little with your files . When both of us will be ready let's try together step by step .
First make an separate folder in your C drive named whatever you want test or temp .Put inside CBROM and bios files EX58EX.13S .
Download and instal HxD which is Hex Editor program.

Did i forget to do something? - If you take a look on the forum where you get this method they are using a different version of cbrom v1.98 .You are using 155 ?!

I was going off this information about what version i should use:


Phoenix/Award platform BIOS modding tools:

• This is the tool I recommand to download and to use for the old Award or Phoenix BIOSes:
  >CBROM32_198.EXE< 344 (>MIRROR< 64)
  Note: The CBROM32_198.EXE has been renamed by me to "CBROM.EXE" to make it easier for you. It works in the DOS box (has to be run as Admin) of all actual Windows Operating Systems, even within a 64bit environment.
• If this CBROM version should not handle your special Phoenix/Award BIOS file correctly, you should download and try another CBROM version you get >here< 298. Attention: Only very few CBROM versions will work in a 64bit environment, some of them need to be run in real DOS mode.
• Only for users with a Gigabyte Award BIOS:
  Due to the specific characteristics of Gigabyte Award BIOSes (look >here< 75) you may additionally need the older version 155 of CBROM. You can get it here:
  >CBROM_155.EXE< 118 (>MIRROR< 22)

Ok . you can try this two version of bios mod .One is done with Ismail modded ver like a base and with @MrPanda guide .Second is done with original bios ver and the guide from WinRaid forum .

Thank you so much for coming back to me with this file, but I just managed to mod the bios myself by first extracting the last PCI rom and modifying that one extracting the old one and then re-installing my modded one and bingo I can now see my NVMe drive.

im going to write up my exact process so that it can help anyone one else doing the same.

CBROM155 yes, indeed. use only this version.

cooling on my computer : it s a P190 with a 30cm diameter fan in the door, due to volume it took inside it has been setup outside the case instead of inside. with 2x 120mm from Artic as front intake, 1x 120mm at back outtake+ 2x140mm on top of case for extra heat out taking

globally stable temps, even during the summer when my room temp raises to 35°c

will send you the bios pictures with settings, there s a few gigabyte particularities that have to be checked

for extra air movement the PCI slot can be a solution, just buy a support and some _thin_ fans, but they wont have much space to "breathe"

or maybe with some modding, you can place a fan on the door, with something to make some distance between the door and the fan, and put it exactly where you want it to cool down. even do some holes in the door if possible, add a dust filter, and you have a direct cold intake exactly where you want it

i ll go back to bed... 2025 flu is really really not a joke. second one, the perk of having a kid in midschool and the other one at high, they bring different viruses home, at different time.....

well I actually did use the CBROM_198 version and it worked, I’ve installed Windows now but the Ethernet ports BSD if I plug in the cable, not sure if this is just a driver issue or bios. I did install the Realtek drivers for my motherboard but still BSD. It’s ok because I’m actually using a WiFi/Bluetooth card that works great.

I have a QNAP QM4-4P-384A, same ASM2824 switch. Not sure if it's the absolute best option (for the money), but they do work well.

4P is 4xM.2 Nvme and 2P are only two port you are right . The price on the market is above 200 USD (4P is slightly cheaper ) . What is good with this Qnap it is about cooling solution one heatsink over chip switch and Nvme drives (and fan ) compare with Startech which has only one small heatsink over chipset .

This thread scope is not an simple ask and serve .
