Which CPU would you choose based on these build specs?

Hey everyone!

Thanks for taking the time to look over my 1st build! I've purchased most of the parts already (bolded, green) but I'm torn between 3 CPU's.

Intel Core i5-13600K 3.5 GHz 14-Core Processor
Intel Core i5-14600K 3.5 GHz 14-Core Processor
Intel Core i7-12700K 3.6 GHz 12-Core Processor

I'm leaning towards just biting the bullet on the 14th gen as it's only $20 more approx than the 13th.
A good friend of mine told me about the voltage issues with some 13th and 14th gen CPU's.
I will be looking to undervolt it right away with Throttlestop anyways which from my understanding would eliminate/mitigate the issue. (@unclewebb I'll be reaching out to you soon again!)

Usage is just general basic gaming, not looking to do anything crazy or try and hit highest FPS, just want a decent system that is budget friendly.

13600k is a 14600k (refresh of the 13600k) you can just OC it if you want to and call it a 14600k
both the 13600k and 14600k outperform the 12700k and do a better job it seems at core scheduling, update the mobo BIOS for either i5 CPU to take care of voltage issues

Have to feel this list would've been vastly different if you'd asked before buying any parts. Within your budget GPU would've taken much higher priority. Also doubt a Z board would've been suggested. 12600K + B760 + 3060ti + 750w PSU as a rough example. If not too late it might be worth considering returning board and gpu. And RAM if a D4 board could be found.

Is there something particularly wrong with the board I chose? I know GPU isn’t the best in class but it was the most budget friendly based on what was compatible with the motherboard via MSI’s site. I went with the MSI partly due to aesthetic to be honest but it seemed like a decent board overall.
Any tips to look out for, always wanting to learn!

I did a rework of yours, figured you hand picked these parts because you liked them and liked what you see.

So went with 13600KF which is cheaper without the iGPU and was able to upgrade the GPU to 4060ti and the motherboard to Asus TUF, which is actually a really decent board. Slapped in some Patriot memory with decent latency.

Should be a strong system, and around the same price range. Well, here. Check it out.

Tried to keep my comments free of exact products in order to gently point out concerns your currently planned build appeared to me as having room for improvement. We generally ask some pertinent questions here while posting wildly different build lists. Everyone has their own ideas what you should buy. 3050 was more than all else the component that spurred a comment.

Z790 at the right price is great. Even better if it adds to your enjoyment. For a budget minded turn on and game system I would 100% take an equally 100% GPU bound Intel 12/13/14 system comprised of B mobo and nothing lower than a 3060ti instead. 12600K and 3080 for gaming at 1080 would come closer yet to a given game tipping cpu into being the weaker point. This is why we typically ask very specific questions about what games and what settings at what resolution you are aiming for.

Thanks for your feedback! I was using PCPartpicker so I was trying to use my best judgement and also research (forums/youtube) trying to aim for good quality components and budget friendly mindset. My usage is honestly going to be primarily gaming at 1080p and then I'll get a 1440p monitor in future but at the present time I'm not looking to push it past that resolution as I don't need it. FPS my current monitor is locked at 60hrz so until I get a better monitor I don't need to push it for super high end FPS till I get a monitor with 144hrz or so.

I was honestly looking at KF chips for the savings but I'm worried about not having an iGPU for issues/troubleshooting. Do you honestly feel it's unnecessary or is there some legitimacy to having an iGPU? The savings difference is good enough to justify it $ wise, but my worry gives me more concern than confidence.

Well we just hope you don't ever have issues with your dedicated card, which usually there aren't any. Everything in life is a gamble!

I have a K, but thats what was available at the local retailer. I did have a 13600KF, but I also have more than 1 gpu laying around.

What applies to one person is different to another. If the PC is purely for gaming and you have another GPU you can take out from another PC or on the shelf it's a non issue. If you need the PC for more than gaming (work, home work, taxes, shopping, etc.,) than if your GPU goes down for whatever reason the iGPU is extremely beneficial. Often the difference is like $20 or less so it's not a big deal to get the K, if the KF was priced at a $40 difference than you start to make a value assessment based on your needs. I just buy the K since I often retire my older gaming CPUs to another build that won't be for gaming.

Thanks for the build suggestion! I am intrigued by the Patriot storage as that's a great price for 2TB. How has patriot faired VS corsair as I've been a corsair fan for years (I use other corsair peripherals on my other PC's and RAM on some prev gaming laptops I've owned). You suggested 750W PSU, which PCPARTPICKER noted an approx 400W on my build so I was using the double rule, do you think 750W would be enough? I was thinking of 850W cause I wanted to future proof a bit as I'll want to buy a better GPU in approx 3-5 years probably. Also the note on Windows 11 is solid cause I'll move the key from my current tower to my new build thanks for the $savings!

You could go cheaper on PSU but it's a bad place to skimp and this way you're ready for any future GPU.
