Currently im running a core i7 4770k, with 16gb of ram. 600w power supply 250gig SSD and r290 gpu. I want to be able to play all the games that came with my game pass subscription. Could i run a 1080 or an amd equivalent at 1440p and enjoy a dx12 game with my current setup. my mother board has a pci express 4x16 slot.

As a person that used to have a 4770k, and gtx1080. You can at 1440p but you will have to run stuff a low settings for mostly everything. Its at a point its not gpu holding things back its the cpu being the bottleneck.

Yeah, save for the full PC overhaul. 4770K is ancient.

I ran a i7-4790 with a rx 6700 xt for a while before a platform upgrade, obvious bottleneck, but just capping the fps to 60 fps helped a lot for the cpu to "catch up". But you should save up for a more modern platform down the line.

4770K can still hang. If the majority of your library is going to be from Gamepass, that's probably the target CPU for a lot of seasonal stuff.
My FX-8370 performs about the same when overclocked and that was a chip that carried me half the time in VR. Pair it with something good.
Not powerful but good good. My RX580 was maybe a ~35% bottleneck then and like ~85% today caused mainly by missing feature sets.
Something 3060 or 6750XT territory should fit right.

Get a better card now, then upgrade the platform later.

No sense buying a "balanced" GPU and then realising it still needs upgrading when you eventually shift to a modern platform.

Something like the 5060/70/Ti.

You should be fine with an RTX 3060 or 3060ti. Anything more would be overkill for that older CPU. DDR3 is cheap right now. If you've got 2x8GB and your board has pair of empty RAM slots you could install another 8GB or 16GB kit, which could be helpful in some games.

The OP may not have that option. So a fair GPU upgrade is what they asked for...

Exactly. It's older but can still do well at 1080p or 1440p with a solid video card.

Now this is fairly good advice. A 4060ti or 4070 would be a solid option for future upgrades. Of course this depends on the budget the OP has to work with.

Not at current prices..

Rx 6700, 6750, 6800, or the likes in 7000 line

I also place my vote for the RTX 4060 or RTX 4060 Ti, they would be a great fit. Low footprint, adequate performance, and having access to advanced upscalers such as DLSS 4 with frame generation is going to be a major boon on an older system. Power consumption is lower and feature set is superior compared to GPUs such as the RX 6700 and 6800 series. The media engine is also far better than anything in RDNA 2 - avoid these for such a system. In fact, at this point, avoid RDNA 2 at all.

If not in a rush, wait to see RTX 5060 and RX 9060 series. Just don't buy anything RX 6000/7000 - they are the poorest fit for your use case.

What's your budget? Or better said, how much are you willing to spend in a new GPU?

As somebody who recently upgraded his GTX 1080 due to VRAM struggling at 3440x1440 in certain scenarios/games, I would really contemplate a beefier GPU than that, at least in VRAM department, hence asking you for a budget.

If you're ok with a used GPU and can source a decent deal locally then the 3070ti can be a good option.

@OP. What your budget is like?

That would depend on if it/s a 4GB or 8GB, and running maybe 1080p

Yes but maybe he will upgrade the rest when he can, not everyone can afford a complete new system all at once.

I will highly recommend platform upgrade its time to retire the 4770, for the gpu go with rx 6600

No such thing as a 4 GB 1080.

well cpu is gonna be holding things back more then gpu. as most games were wanting around 4770k min and when got faster cpu, i saw a bit of a fps bump with the gtx1080. Can't say % wise how much cause i never did any testing but it was a good 10-20% better fps in most games.

I'd rather get a 6700 XT (or even a 6800) at that price point. 8GB of VRAM just isn't a thing anymore.

We need some kind of sticky (pinned) sort of solution for these PC buying guide related threads, that says:

MENTION BUDGET FIRST, pretty please :)

Just a thought, honestly, I mean, IDK how else to put it, like I simply can't recommend/suggest anything if the budget remains vague. And the OP's original post is 9 days old already.

I mostly suggested Nvidia due to DLSS.

I guess a 6700XT or similar performance range should be fine.

DLSS is better, can't argue, but I don't personally like that an upscaling method should be considered the most important thing when choosing a GPU.

It's a valid differential especially when the computer being upgraded is 12 years old

For someone coming from R290 and who mentions 1080p, it totally is. I bet you can live in 1440p with it too, if you drop some settings.

The only problem is the 30xx series was from the peak mining era, so I'd be a bit wary...
