And there we go, another amazing update, we seem to have had a kick up the points with another boost and pass of yesterdays best, so, massive thanks to EVERYONE taking part as always, can't do it without each and everyone of you!!
That also said, we seems to have a milestone and stoner today!! :D :D Here goes!!

@NBrock !!

And there we go, @NBrock another massively hard working gent producing amazing outputs, thank you so much to you for helping this team as you do!! Well, I had best get moving on, but just massive respects for everyone here at TPU helping with the team :) Can't wait to see you all again tomorrow for another update!! :D :D

A while back I tried folding with my 6700 XT in my main sim racing rig, and it worked. I'd use that but I'm concerned about running my best GPU at full tilt 24/7. Is folding as GPU-intensive as mining?
Well, if I'm completely honest, most of my RTX 3080s and RTX 3070s have been mined on, my mate sent my half over from the US and since the mining had died out, I've had them crunching and folding away :) I found because we tweaked the cards, even with them being mined on, they where around 50C for a lot of the time on the core, the RAM was overclocked but that's where the mining power came from the RAM. So we'd also re-done the paste and pads on the cards, but I can say without doubt, maybe 2 years later on now, I've had them running FAH as much as I can - I run out of solar power with how much I can draw with all the cards on at once  - but they are still carrying on :)

How I tend to set the cards up for the crunching, I usually set the power limit to 70 to 80% in Afterburner and up the fan speed to a comfortable noise but generally 60% to 70% for the cards to run constantly. They are all beasts in my opinion and have worked flawlessly.. Even my 3090s I have had, have been mined on, my Asus Strix in my Threadripper system is under water and a dual sided block but for that one I leave at 100% power as it rarely goes above 40C when under FAH load. That I thank to for the 560mm rad its set up on :) When the heat builds up in the room and the ambient temps rise, its a bit of a pain but I still just make sure it sits no more than 50 to 55C, same goes for my 3970X as well, it crunches away as long as the system is on, I'm trying to do my bit!! :D

What sort of PSU do you have in your system at the moment @jak_2456 ??

That depends in part on the WU and settings. Some jobs hit the processor harder than others.

If you want to reduce GPU load, there are several options. One is to back off on frequency, voltage and/or power on the GPU. I run BOINC on my Intel CPUs, and the 10/11700K have pretty high default limits. I experimented a bit and landed on a 125W (or was it 135W?) power limit to keep temps during sustained crunching under 80C. For a GPU example, the 2060S I fold on was set to minimum freq/V and an 80% power limit in the EVGA tuning software to keep temps low enough that the failsafe fan profile didn't kick in (the hotspot on that card runs really warm). If you use GUI tuning software, you could have two profiles set up: one full-speed for when gaming and down-tuned one for folding.
You could also set scheduled hours for folding, or set the application to Moderate or Light, though I'll admit to not knowing what those settings actually do.

Folding hammers the compute cores almost exclusively, so there's no need to worry about stressing the memory. Processors are nigh-immortal as long as they're kept reasonably cool, even when running continuously. Keep it under 80C and your card will be just fine, at least until it's long since become untenable as a gaming card.

My main rig has an EVGA 600 BA. 80+ Bronze and it can do all 50 A on 12 V. Also, I like the idea of capping the power limit on the card.

Right, so something like a 1080 TI or something like that would be decent enough in the rig for the PSU? Or maybe a 2080 or 2080 Super maybe??

I cap the power to help with controlling the temps and draw on the cards.. I mean the difference from a 3070 at 100% to about 80% I think if my memory serves me right, is about 40 to 50w, might not sound like much but it helps reduce the fan speed and then noise and everything else... Helps with trying to keep things cooler in the summer months :)

Sure. Coincidentally, I ran an overclocked 1080 Ti in that PC for quite some time until it started crashing unless I capped the power limit.

No. I can not recall of anyone "losing" a card when running F@H. F@H is famous, or is that infamous, for exposing cards with problems. F@H pulls about the same wattage as gaming, so there is no overload. F@H is a good way to test if a GPU is stable.

I've just done some quick testing for you on my RTX 3070, I'm quite surprised but thought I'd share the results with you :) I tested the card in about a 22C ambient temp according to my temp sensor thingy in the conservatory :)

So here goes, FAH running on my EVGA RTX 3070 XC -

16-05-25 FAH RTX 3070 80P 70P Fan 3.png

Now with this setup was the 80% Power limit. Same fan speed was used throughout 70%. I was noticing the power of the GPU to be dropping down to about 155w and then ranging to where it was about 190w depending on whatever it was doing in the work unit.

Next up, 100% power limit -

16-05-25 FAH RTX 3070 100P 70P Fan 4.png

Now as you can see in the pic, the power of the GPU was hitting about 210w (I think it went a little higher, by a couple watts or so) and then dropped down to about 180 to 190w depending on the work it was doing. Temps also went up about 3 or so degrees, in the short time I was using the changed power limit.

I also have a wattage meter plugged into the PC, so I did also have a look at the total wattage the system was pulling, whilst it was doing some Milkyway CPU crunching. The total difference was about 20 to 25W depending on the point I was taking a reading, but it was generally quite stable as it wasn't 300w one minute and then 400w the next, the difference was around 3 to 5w or so..

What I was having a look at also was the prices of the GPUs as well, which was utterly mad in my thinking but thought I'd share some with you as I was interested and thought, I had a few minutes spare for a change :D

So first up, an RTX 2080 Super, with water block -

1747437512631.png

For me I'm fussy, I'd like something complete but this was card only and only any interest if you have a water loop, but if not.....

1747437591272.png

RTX 2080 TI, not a bad card at all, its a shame the seller isn't 100% positive but mileage may vary I guess :)
Next up -

1747437676498.png

The exact card I have been using for the testing this evening, in honesty, pretty decent pricing I think?? :) If you believe the 10 hour Minecraft use, there we go :)
Next up, similar card, different cooler...

1747437828702.png

Now for me, the difference in the price, I'd probably consider the FTW since I'd like to hope it would be cooler and quieter since the cooler is a little bit bigger and so on... I can't remember though if that came with a box but that's another point and story :)
Next!!

1747437922521.png

And another 3070 FTW, maybe worth the extra $1 if you've got a thing for boxes, I'd have to :D
Another look into a little something newer I thought...

1747438015777.png

Now reading the description on this one I was a little intrigued but since it had just had the water block fitted and not used, I'd be concerned... But that was the cheapest 4080 I could see.. Which I was well, gutted about and thinking what the heck is going on... :(

I thought I'd check out a RTX 3080, so the XC and FTW versions like with the 3070 above... Found these...

1747438328356.png

So about a $100 difference for the XC and then the FTW card...

1747438446721.png

I'm going to guess they start to go up in price from this but again, $400 for a 3080, I feel that's its not a terrible bargain?? Well, bargain in the loose sense of the word I think... Card prices today are just crazy... I didn't even bother with the 4090 or 5090....

But with all the prices and cards aside, I thought I'd dig in a little deeper as well and see how they ranked in FAH, so I used this web site - FAH GPU Ranks

Here's a snippet for each of the cards and their ranks.. Top dog isn't tehe 5090 but one of the very expenisve Nvidia GH100 cards... 80GB RAM... Yeah, not budging for one of those to try and keep up with @SmookinJoe and @NBrock !! :D:D

And here we have a comparison for a number of cards, Nvidia and AMD just to cover a few bases....

1747439700950.png

Now there was a point in a way for me doing this as well, as just capturing prices and such because I wished to know what all of the FAH team was running and when they buy cards for the FAH work, do they get something that works for other things first, like gaming performance or do you specifically buy cards just for FAH?

If you are buying just for FAH, what do you look for most in the card? I've copied a number of cards that I own myself and have used for FAH. Since the work units are getting bigger, longer and tougher to do, I'm trying to consider the most efficient and cost effective card to buy myself also. As mentioned before, the 3070s and 3080s I've got here, where mainly from mining but I wanted to put them to better use after that was done, so they are used for my girls PCs for gaming, whenever they do that :)

I've been toying with a 3080/4080/4090/5080/5090 range of cards but I can't see any reason to buy the newer series of cards due to the prices of them... 4080s going for $1000+ to maybe $1500 a piece - if I tried doing that for the 10 plus machines I have, I'd not be able to eat or something for a year to afford them :laugh: I kinda like eating....... :( lol I think the 3090's prices are about the $650 to$750 ish price so for double the money you can get the 4080 and up, which does give you a load more points for the day, similar power usage I think??

So, over to you all for your thoughts and comments on the above and what you'd consider too :) Apologies for the long post!!

Wow, dude, thanks for all the research! I was not expecting that! :respect:
Two things:
1) I got my main folding rig with the GTX 745 going again. I switched it to a USB Wi-Fi adapter. I do think the Ethernet NIC on that PC is not working properly.
2) I think I'd be OK with folding on my sim racing PC (full specs in under "system specs") as long as I capped the power limit on the GPU. Because I am a very frugal person, I don't think I could see myself buying a whole other GPU for F@H.

I would make a list of available cards and rank them in compute power per Watt.
And then pick the best rated card that falls within your budget.
And if power usage is not an issue , you could just rank the cards in compute power per $$$ ( or £££ ).

I look for cards that are around USD200, 250W TBP or under, and appreciably faster than my current fastest card. Eyeing 2080 ti and 3070s atm, but they're taking their sweet time to drop into my price range.

Here we are everyone for a quick FAH Pie Stats update for the 16th May 2025!!

And there we are for another update :D:D Not a bad day at all everyone, nice work indeed :D:D I hope everyone is having a great Saturday?? Sadly no milestones or stoners today I don't believe but when your hitting 300 million or more as an average 24 hours, I don't think its all that important :D:D I hope to see you all back again tomorrow for another update!! :D:D Take care everyone, hope you all have a great evening!!

A while back I tried folding with my 6700 XT in my main sim racing rig, and it worked. I'd use that but I'm concerned about running my best GPU at full tilt 24/7. Is folding as GPU-intensive as mining?

It is intensive for the core but not so much for the memory, so you can try making a profile that's running lower voltages and clocks to reduce power consumption and heat output.

Edit : I responded without seeing everyone already said that :P

And there we are with another great days contributions as always :D:D I hope everyone is having a great day so far and is OK!! Seems to be lovely and warm here again so I feel like I'm cooking  Damn UK weather, at least the sun is out and making some free power for me!!
Well I had best make a move but I hope to see you all again tomorrow for another update!! :D :D Take care everyone!! :D :D

Either I got a golden sample for F@H 7900XTX thats pulling in 8M+ PPD or those table numbers are a bit off.

Either I got a golden sample for F@H 7900XTX thats pulling in 8M+ PPD or those table numbers are a bit off.
All the numbers are a bit off...IMHO
Some wu's are also the reason for hi and low points.
My 3080 12g does 10mil on average
My 3080 10g does 7-8mil on average(depending on the machine and WU)
