“What we desperately need—apart from advancing the machine learning side—is to forge these meaningful collaborations between the machine learning experts and the animal behavior researchers,” Rutz said, “because it’s only when you put the two of us together that you stand a chance.”

Smart and balanced approach from the sound of it, I really think there is potential here. I have always wondered if we could talk to animals, I mean, at a more advanced level. I wonder what would happen if we could tell elephants some humans are bad and want their ivory, but other humans will protect them from the bad humans, and here is how to tell the difference, and how to avoid the poachers. I wonder if they could actively digest that information someday, learn what areas to avoid, etc.

Dog says "moar."

Seriously though, this is something AI might actually be good at... better than a lot of the use cases. I like it.

Dogs are a bad example as they end to be more about emotion. Whales, dolphins, elephants, I think there is a lot of potential for a variety of creatures.

I think it could be neat, it will be neat to see where this topic is in about 5 years...

Another reason I wish this website had a !remind me in x amount of time feature like Reddit does.

I am curious what my Orange cat is saying.

Probably "Fuck You", and "Let me out before I destroy your couch some more."

And "Don't touch my belly if you value your extremities."

And the classic.. "Haha I shit in your garden again, happy hunting fucker."

I don't need to know how much my dog is judging me for not sharing my food or how sad she is when I go to work.

Animals don't communicate same way we do. It's real basic with animals but their emotions are more expresses in movement than noise. With some exceptions.

Dolphins and whales are different. But rest? Unless AI is just gonna be translating that. If it would even work.

If we do have an animal communication break through with AI, it may be limited to the verbal realm. Many animals use body language and scent to communicate.

Perhaps communicating with apes could be achieved easily. Orangutans can use tools if taught before a certain age. Communicating with them better might be something of merit.

You are missing the point.
No I'm not. I'm being facetious, I don't want guilt trip.

Universal translation has always been a passion of mine, language or species.

You don't say (makes that meme smirk face)

Yeah, I'm tired so I'm not making the sense I'd like to atm.

The "royal we"

"And the fanning of the cedars made a breeze. The breeze blew from the turret As I parted his locks; With his gentle hand he wounded my neck And caused all my senses to be suspended. I remained, lost in oblivion;"

Must agree - Cats are direct that way and don't beat around the bush about anything, esp if they're pissed off at you.

Alot of the time though I'd have to bet it's all about "I'm starving - FEED ME DAMMIT" even though they look like you could stamp Goodyear on their ass and fly them over a stadium.

You can talk back to cats whenever you want, they undestand pretty well. But they don't give a flying fuck.

true but I'd still love to talk to our Luna, as long as it had an "off switch."

People have had luck with training dogs to use soundboards to communicate mind, and they understand more than you'd think. They are very social creatures. The soundboards tend to play on that, featuring social words like "Hello new friend!"

I don't need to know how much my dog is judging me for not sharing my food or how sad she is when I go to work.
Hence an off switch. But I wouldn't mind knowing what she's barking at, sometimes.

This actually is a field I've been following a bit too. Not just because I'm a frog that talks to people, either. The human side of me has reasons.
