In many cases, my 2080 Ti is limited to the RTX 5050 level. For the most part, I can find something that works satisfactorily when both the CPU and GPU are taking turns underperforming.

Well that's because your CPU have very low clocks and turbo....there are some good Xeon V4 CPU's with high clocks but I believe that there is still better to go with some higher clock Xeon V3 CPU and then "hack" the bios so that CPU can do all cores turbo......In that case it could push GPU's like 2080TI to their limits......

This was a silly video. The wrong CPU being used for a task it was never intended for. An E5-2667 would have been the greatly better choice. Higher base/boost clocks is the key.
Yeah you are on point I still think a 10 core 20 threads xeon CPU would be plenty

My 18 cores 36 threads CPU working without any problem. Every game runs perfect.

Maybe, but the per-core clocks, even with boost, are not going to perform as well as 8 & 10 core models with higher default and boost clocks, for games. Remember most games, while mutlithreaded, still do not actively utilized more than 4 or 6 cores. It's only more recent titles that take advantage of 8+ cores.

An 18 core can be hacked to 3.6 GHz in bios but that won't help much, 28% OC is like 60 FPS to 75 FPS bump and still reviewing a Chinese board and not doing it is a big fail and a disservice. My problems are much more serious. For 120 Fps I need at least 6 GHZ skylake IPC or a 5GHz lion cove P-core.

My first xeon was E5472 without turbo. He was worked flawless. Next was W3565 than X5670, than X5680, than E5-2690 and every of them worked perfect.

Either whatever you ran was low spec enough or the chip had a turbo. Either way even an overclocked 1680v2 will struggle with newer games.

Sure they're capable but power hungry compared to better choices if it's just gaming. Specific chips for specific uses.

I have never overclocked Xeon processors or any before them, because I personally have no need for it. What Xeon processors provide is more than enough for me. I don't crave games that run over 200 frames. 60 FPS is more than enough for me. Even with the latest games, I set the settings to 60 FPS even though they run over 200 FPS. I think I mentioned somewhere that graphics consume more power when it's over 90 FPS. I also made a video for YouTube where I show the difference in power consumption at 60 FPS and over 60 FPS.

I've only ever OC'd unlocked versions of Xeons. With you on it not being greatly useful anymore.
 
Only the newest top 6 or 7 games. Everything else runs fine as long as you have at least 16GB of RAM and a good GPU.
Well yeah it'll run fine at the 60fps mark. That's pretty much expected unless someone runs an L sku of chip that has stupidly low clocks. We're setting the bar pretty low here. :roll:
 
I have an E5-2667V2 and it runs most games at 90 to 100 fps, so a 1680 will offer similar or better performance, when paired with good GPU.
Oh I'm not doubting performance. The 1680v2 was perfectly fine in CP2077 with the 6950XT. I'm just saying it's "just" enough for the basic of gaming. Pick a chip with a lower clock and I bet issues can pop up.

Newer Xeons that push cores over clocks won't do much better than the ones we've had in V1-V4 due to the clock differences. My dual 2698v4 is absolutely horrible for any game just because of the lower clocks unless something wants to use all the threads.

Yeah, exactly. But a 1680 is a higher clocked 8 core. It'll do fine still.

Funnily enough speaking of core clocks, snagged a dual socket board on eBay and was looking at the compatible chips with it. The 2650Lv2 caught my eye with it's horrible clocks even with turbo.


Already have everything for this build so gonna see how it goes.

Nice one. I just love the look of the x79 socket(s), a great piece of engineering from the golden PC era.
That Intel board is fully loaded too. Got most of the parts from a super awesome dude here on the forums but the previous board died. Snagged the Intel one for $40 and everything came right up.
