Windows 11 General Discussion

The simplest way to use a local account is to unplug your RJ45 while installing.
That method did not work for me. I had to use rufus. Windows 11 would not present an option for a local account when I tried installing without network connectivity.

Because that method has been gone for what feels like a year if not two or three.

Edge is so baked into Windows that I'd think it will still exist in some form.
Yeah, I'm not fully sure, but I think Microsoft uses EdgeHTML for UWP, so on that front apps should still work even with the actual browser gone

I'm confused, I did it not later than last week with latest iso build 26100.4061.

At some point, there is a subtle link labelled "I don't have internet" in the bottom left IIRC. Maybe it doesn't show on every edition?

A word of warning. The current preview version of Win11(5058499) killed my HDR support to the 4k / 120hz OLED. All I got was a green screen. I could turn off HDR completely but then again some HDR movies become way too dark. Supposedly there's a way to disable Dolby Vision but I could never find a way to switch it off.

Why do people keep installing W11, it just validates all the crap they are doing and planning. Should have died like W8, in misery. What happens next it's your fault.

AFAIK this still works

And not even a week later we have the new bypass :pimp:

That will not work anymore.

Should I be worried about stuff like this? My system does support it. I already saw where to enable ftpm on my MOBO and my processor is also eligible.
Given what you've said about your specs? You're fine. I have Win11 23H2 running smoothly on a Core2Quad with 8GB of RAM and a 2GB GPU. Your system will have no problems.

I'm gonna backup some files this week and then I'll go for it.
We'll be here.

They do indeed, pretty much all of the Win11 UI new tricks rely on WebView that is essentially a copy of Edge.

…because Windows 11 will be the only supported system come October. That’s pretty relevant for most people since they don’t particularly want to pay MS for extended support. That, and you are forgetting that the vast majority of PC users aren’t enthusiasts - they are okay with whatever OS as long as it runs their programs of choice.

not all versions of W10 will lose support come October. Make better choices.
The same non enthusiasts killed W8, that doesn't seem like a valid argument. W11 market share is too high for what they are doing and planning on doing, and that only validates it.

Ah, yes, I am sure normal average people are jumping onto running Enterprise in droves. Or even know of its existence.

Because, believe it or not, unlike 8 which was a burning dumpster, 11 is actually fine. After a bit of elbow grease and tweaking (which you had to do with ANY Windows version) it’s no worse than 10, even better in some aspects. And for the “normies” it’s perfectly acceptable right out of the box. The UI is inoffensive. The Apple-esque leanings with turning Start into a launchpad is nothing compared to 8 and the fucking full screen tiles. No comparison.

Not sure Entreprise is a secret.

enjoy no privacy, co pilot, recall and all that crap, Win 8 seems like a better alternative in comparison

All of those are easily fixable/removable, so sure, I will keep enjoying my Win 11 install that has been running flawlessly since RTM. On the other hand, coming into the thread where people discuss Windows 11 and going “stop using Windows 11, I don’t like it because buzzwords” is one of the moves of all time, that’s for sure.

Not sure Entreprise is a secret.
You vastly overestimate the average PC user.

This!

Not sure Enterprise is a secret.
Are you sleep deprived at the moment? The common user knows nothing about Enterprise/LTSC versions of Windows.
Win 7 seems like a better alternative in comparison
Fixed that for you. Suggesting Windows 8 is a good alternative to ANYTHING is not helpful and only serves to completely discredit you as a person to be taken seriously. Is that really where you want to go?

Windows 8 was not bad once you used a third party app to bring back the proper Start Menu. I actually liked how it looked, and it was lean and snappy. Explorer in W11 is quite sluggish at times. I’ll open explorer and nothing happens for several seconds, so I click again. Eventually multiple Explorer windows open. Never had this on any version of windows before.

While you're not wrong, the easier and vastly better solution was to jump to Windows 7. There was just no compelling reason to use Win8.

I seen that before. I happened to XP sometimes when it wanted to get on the net and couldn't reach the microsoft servers for whatever reason. I learn to block it in the firewall which solves the problem. Saw it again in Win10 in 2016. There might be something similar going on with Explorer in Win11. Blocking Explorer in whatever firewall you have in use should solve that issue on a permanent basis. You really shouldn't be allowing your file manager access to the internet at all.

I have no choice. My only Windows machine is a corporate laptop. I would guess IT prevents some of that already.

aren't they the same people that didn't even bought into W8 (the argument you brought up)? they seemed to me to be informed back then.

@Bomby569
You don't need to be informed to have a visceral gut reaction to shit UI, I have no idea why you even equate that with getting an Enterpise OS and a license for it, let alone knowing the difference.

I'm still PISSED over MS hasn't done nothing to the file explorer with no freaking option to "Continue where I Left off Feature"
What do you mean by this? That's what sleep modes are for.

Do you mean through a reboot?

Not sure I would want that. An important function, IMO, of the reboot process is precisely the fact it closes out all apps and resets Explorer and other features back to their fresh boot status/settings. This is exactly why a simple reboot fixes so many issues with wayward apps and drivers, etc.

Well at least Explorer X does actually what I want. Like I tend to close explorer but wait MS is too Lazy to add this simple function. I wrote ON GBT and yes I agree explorer is old and it's Hard but come on MS...

I think what he means is a "pick up where you left off" kind of feature. I agree, that would be very handy and useful.

I still think that is what sleep modes are for. And that works for me as I rarely ever reboot or shutdown, unless some security or Windows update requires it, or a major, extended power outage, etc. I can easily go several weeks without rebooting or shutting down. I just let my computer go to sleep, then I pick up where I left off next time I come to the computer.
