Synology Introduces the DiskStation DS425+

Synology today announced the launch of the DS425+, a compact 4-bay storage solution. "The DS425+ offers remarkable performance and capability for its size," said Michael Wang, Product Manager at Synology. "They are an ideal choice for users with specific storage needs who still want the benefits of centralized storage."

The 4-bay DS425+ provides a fixed storage configuration of up to 80 TB of raw data, ideal for smaller-scale deployments with consistent storage requirements. For network connectivity, the DS425+ features a 2.5GbE port along with a 1GbE RJ-45 port. Additionally, it supports M.2 NVMe SSDs for either SSD caching or high-performance all-flash.




DS425+ is engineered as a full-featured system to deliver consistent performance and reliability with Synology hard drives. It follows a carefully curated drive compatibility framework, backed by over 7,000 hours of rigorous testing. To ensure optimal integration and long-term dependability, DSM on the DS425+ requires compatible hard drives for installation. A third-party validation program is available upon request, allowing drive manufacturers to test their products using the same rigorous standards applied to Synology

As it has been the case lately with synology: The software is great, but you cannot expect to keep up with the competition using a CPU whose architecture is 8 years old like the J4125. I just checked and it is even discontinued/EOL by the manufacturer.

Wake up! Chinese companies are doubling your performance with a similar power envelope at half the price. Maybe if N100 didn’t exist synology could have a point. But it does, and so the N305.

Also: I started requiring a 10Gbe port on my main NAS 10 years ago. At least as an option/upgrade. The current 2.5Gb at this price point is a joke.

Yeah, this one is listed for about €550 and it doesn't even have a PCIe slot you can put a 10GbE NIC into. Add that to the pathetic 2GB RAM and obsolete processor and it's a rip-off even before Synology scalp you with their drives tax.

Ugreen DXP4800 is a much higher spec unit with vastly superior anodised aluminium build quality, quadruple the RAM, 2x2.5Gbe, a decent, modern CPU, your choice of drives, and is still about 25% cheaper. Its OS also looks and feels very similar to DSM, so for anyone suffering from Synology Stockholm Syndrome, it's a no-brainer.

It's almost like Synology are actively trying to turn away customers at this point as some kind of share price manipulation scam.
