Windows 11 General Discussion

Just had a W11 installation self-immolate.

Locked up on a blank black screen when attempting to open a program, so rebooted. Now it won't boot at all. Specifically, it boots to a BSOD with a REGISTRY_ERROR code.

RIP.

Anyone ever try this one??

I would just use Windows 11 IOT/Enterprise LTSC.
Neither of those allow for the kind of nitty-gitty customizations that the autounattend site linked earlier(in another thread) can provide. It really is the best option.

Damn. Never seen that unless I was jacking with things to experiment..

  • Windows Component Store (WinSxS)
  • Windows Defender (only disabled, can be enabled back if needed)
  • Windows Update (Windows Update wouldn't work anyway without WinSxS, so enabling it would only put the system in a state where it would try to update but fail spectacularily)
  • WinRE
What an idiot ‍:banghead:
The author, not you, btw.

Why is that?

Some people don't use and don't care about the Windows store.
Some people don't used and don't need Windows Defender as they have their own security software.
Some people don't use auto updates because of the shocking frequency that update have of screwing up peoples systems.

Where is your complaint?

Uh, wouldn't that be a crash or program errors waiting to happen?
No.

Windows Store is not the same thing as WinSxS.
Windows Update is not the same thing as automated Windows updates installation.

You tell me. I know I wouldn't want to mess with that even if I was drunk.

I remember back in the early Windows RT/Surface days. Folks would move the WinSxS library over to the microSD card to gain storage space on the base-model eMMC drive. They didn’t try to delete it though.

Yeah deleting WinSxS is a quick path to a broken install.

I think you are way more often than needed full of yourself and that's why you are missing a lot. I remember why I had you in ignore for several years now. You know a lot, can add a lot to a lot of discussions, but man aren't you the mother and father of all the arrogant internet know it all pricks. Just saying, I have no interest in starting a fight or drama.

It's just a private preview, Microsoft is gathering feedback from anti-malware vendors, but it seems like they're looking to first move those out of the kernel, and further down the line other stuff as well

I was doing that by standard for a while. Never had a problem. So what am I missing?
It will break future windows updates pretty fast. If you never update on like a small embedded style system it might be ok...

If they do this, shouldn't they also move anti-cheat software for games out of the kernel? I feel like one isn't better than the other... as far as risks go.

Yes, but newsflash from hell: They won't. I have no idea why but it seems the norm to allow those guys to do whatever the hell they want.

I see M$ employees got a C average in their logic philosophy class, Aristotle would be sad.

C average might be generous, because it would imply they at least didn't sleep through most of the class, but yeah.

What do you expect when Chat GPT does all the homework?

Anti-malware providers are in nearly all cases operating from boot to shutdown in the kernel, as far as I know. Anti-cheat shouldn't be loaded 24/7, though Vanguard is one notable exception.

Installed W11 24H2 today and...

I'm back on W10.

Even something as basic as CPU-Z showed performance drop (losing around 200 points during stress test).

And yes, it was standard iso run through CTT.

October is just round the corner, might as well update now.

has there ever been an instance where installing a new OS on old hardware ever avoided decreased performance ? In my experience, the biggest penalty observed was W4WGs to Win 95 with 95 being 40 slower in typical bencmarks of the time.
