Best time to sell your used 4090s is now.

E bay people still deal with that place?

@harm9963 keep your card and enjoy your system

The FOMO is real and highly overrated. You aren't gaining that much for almost double the price of what the 4090 was going for at MSRP.

I had a few days with a 5090 for a customer build it's definitely noticable at 4k with heavy RT over the 4090 but unless you can get a decent chunk back selling the 4090 definitely not worth it it's very 1080ti to 2080ti like
unless you run local LLM that exceed 24GB.

You also need a pretty strong cpu the 285k was holding it back in some games even at 4k.

I wonder what will you buy next after you sell a very decent nvidia 4090?

5090 with 4060 to have physx capabilities and improved latency when using Frame generation via $7 lossless scaling 3.0 app.
Although 4 gig vram card as secondary good enough as well.

I have a buddy who kept asking when I was going to sell mine, told him when somebody offers a gpu that is 50%+ faster for less than 1k lol...

Normally I would have sold my 3080ti put my 4090 into my secondary pc and upgraded but 35% at 4k isnt appealing to me for 2800 usd, at the 4090s 1600 msrp sure I'd be at least thinking about it. I also wouldnt run the card above 400w so the actual gains are even less for me. I currently run my 4090/3080ti at 325w and I will do the same with any future gpu.

Don't forget the 5090 has almost twice the memory bandwidth as the 4090!

If you need the memory 100% it's worth it for like 8k gaming or LLM.... Not that it's overly good at 8k gaming in demanding games but it can do it.

The power consumption and reliability of the 5090 is a non-starter. The 1080 Ti to 2080 Ti comparison is good, zero reason for 4090 owners to upgrade.

This thread has aged like milk, the 4090 still holds it's value to this day, over 6 months since the OP declared then was the best time to sell.

You can get it down to about 400w and it performs pretty close to stock 10% ish but yeah unless getting a good chunk on the 4090 and scoring an MSRP FE model na dog for sure.

The 4090 wasn't exactly much cheaper....1600 vs 2000. The 5090 is definitely much better for local LLMs. Probably one of the reasons it's still stupid expensive.

It's a 25% price increase for an average of 16% more performance (assuming you are running at full wattage) while using 34% more power. The 4090 was overpriced yes but by comparison the 5090 is vastly more so.

It represents another regression in price to performance and there is zero improvement to perf per watt.

Local LLMs are the only place you see a decent uplift in and that's mostly thanks to the bandwidth and memory speed. Not the architecture itself. The AI market is dragging GPU prices up in the same manner that mining did.

Where can you find a 5090 for 2000??

Most 5080 are between 1500-2000.

I bought my friend an Astral 5080 week after launch for $1424 at microcenter. Prices seem to be stabilizing now. At this point me believing Black Friday might see better pricing closer to MSRP is a stretch unless The 9090xt comes out swinging.

The RTX 3090 may worth 400-450 USD now as the RX 9070 is 42% faster an cost only 599 USD or the RX 9060 XT, which will be as fast as the RTX 3090 with 350 USD price.

I owe everyone and apology. No one could have predicted the current shyte show on roids that happened after Blackwell launch. I agree the 4090 is still a beast. Here an update for closure sakes. The 4090 in Skyrim remastered was definitely playable even at 4k Hardware rt lumen with dlaa but the 5090 at 3ghz with 95% power limit is pretty much ideal way to experience the game without compromise with power usage hovering around 500 watts. Vermintide 2 latency dropped from 4.5ms to 3.4 ms. Other day I came in 1st place under the weekly Cataclysm challenge. I wouldn't say there is no benefit their their.
The delta difference for me is around 35% improvement.

The thermal image on the 12vhpwr cable made me chuckle lol....

Never in a million years would I think that was a good idea till now.....

4K is where it is at with that card and for people that just want to max out that resolution like John Hammond said "spare no expense"

Yeah I have 1 mini macro level usb P2 pro
Xinfrared (formerly InfiRay) P2 Pro Thermal P2 PRO ANDROID B&H https://share.google/0qrxtvpvPtbeoIelJ
Attached to a usb c wire where I connect my Galaxy s25 ultra to the end of it and monitor it when doing testing or playing at gpu bound scenarios.

If i was spending 3k ish on a gpu I would do the same thankfully my Home owners insurance actually covers even accidental damage to my pc with just a 500 usd deductible lol so I'd probably be covered if it went up in flames.

Yeah I build mine at microcenter and used their all in one PC coverage that has allegedly $10k coverage over 2 years. Unfortunately if they don't have the parts to replace they give you the upfront cost of the insurance back which is peanuts compared to a the PC itself ( as per MC employee). The 5090 fell by $300 since I bought it 2 months ago. Still expensive as fudge.
Update I have 3 jobs now.:kookoo:

Uhm, what? That's a single game, on average the 3090 is equal (a bit faster actually at 4k) RT compared to the 9070. It also has more vram.

Newer drivers and newer game Engines shows the RTX 3090 falling behind a lot.

The RX 9070 is now new 599€ and faster then the RTX 3090, which is worth 400€ old used is fine.

Within a single post we went from 42% faster to 20%. Come on bud, another couple of posts and youll admit what reality is. I believe in you.
