Windows 11 General Discussion

I'm not sure what this is called but it's an annoying ass change from all previous windoze versions. When navigating folders in explorer and you go into one folder and then back out, it doesn't return you to the folder you started with but instead refreshes the window and you're at the top of the explorer window. I find this damn annoying especially when dealing a zillion folders.

Does anyone know what this is called?

Kind of sounds like what happens when you search and the hit back. File explorer searching has always (or long enough) been pretty awful.

Does it behave the same way when you use [alt] + [up arrow] ?

It's not like alt + up arrow more like F5. When I drill down into a subfolder and back out with the mouse wheel for ex, it takes me back to the previous folder but I'm at the top of the folders but the kicker is the folder that I drilled into previously is still highlighted. Another point is if the number of folders is low enough to fit into the current explorer window without scrolling, then drilling down and backing out of a folder it looks to behave like explorer in the past. However with more folders than can be shown in explorer where you have to scroll down etc, then backing out refreshes and you're at the top of the folders while context is still highlighted on the folder you drilled into. To me its annoying as f cuz if you hit delete by accident for ex. you'll delete that folder and not realize it cuz your scrolled up to the top while the highlighted folder is off screen.

Windows 11 24H2 on a new PC.

After the last update of July, Windows store doesn't works, repair install didn't work. Same issue. Dism repairs, sfc give no solution. Any thoughts?

I don't want to do a clean install. It isn't mine and it has software for engineering that the serials are hardware related and it's a pain to make them work again.

I try myself few version of windows 11 since launched but it's horrible. Open window or start like slow compare to windows 10. I donno how it perform on games anyway so anyone could clarify is windows 11 better for games than 10 ?

Given this...
I don't want to do a clean install.
...this is likely the best solution. Unless you can live without the store and/or put the OS in DEV mode(sideloading "apps"), a fresh install is all that will likely work.

Trust me, there are many who feel your pain on that point. It sucks, but sometimes that's how things roll.

so anyone could clarify is windows 11 better for games than 10 ?
Better performance? Not really. Win10 and Win11 are on par with each other, with Win11 pulling ahead by 2 or 3%. Compatibility for older titles(XP/Vista/7 timeframe) improved. For me that was a plus. Your Mileage May Vary. unless you're willing to buy the extended security support for a year, it's really time to move up, carefully.

On this note, Chris over at Explaining Computers just did a tutorial video about how to take advantage of microsoft's free updates offer;
I just tested this and it does seem to work.

On a separate w11 note Lex, from https://schneegans.de/windows/unattend-generator/ the unattended setup.
Wifes laptop won't update cause it has the small backup partition bug. So if you set the partition larger in unattended, I'm just wondering if the size needs to be specific.........I am just recalling the Win7 days and SSD alignment issues.

Um, my guess is you need to fresh install and let Setup resize the partitions as needed.

Haha, since yesterday even start menu isn't working.
After some Windows updates.

Ok so... Fresh reinstall needed.

Which folders should I keep for themes and other applications?

depends on your hw - cpu, ram, ssd. version 21H2 is strongly recommended for anything older than Intel 12 gen (and same release dates amd blah blah blah). I put 21H2 on 10 and 11 gen PCs, and 22H2 on 14 gen. No any slowdowns compared to previous 10, every PC is tortured with 3D games.;) Don't see a point to update to "supported" WIndows version (23H2 and 24H2) - i'm tired of fckn buggy "windows updates".

I updated 10 21H2 (LMFAO) to 11 22H2 - couldn't open explorer lol... restarts haven't helped... reinstalled 22H2 from USB and it works... I was just lazy lol, but I like it works perfectly and I don't need to use 10 again lmfao

I use 24H2 on my Dell 7490 (i5 8350u, 16GB RAM and a lowly Kingston NV1) without problems. It does get slow for a bit if I haven't used it for a while (say a couple of weeks), but that doesn't last long. So I guess it depends on what you mean by "slow", if you mean "the system isn't as fast as it should be for a few minutes every couple of months" then I guess yeah it's slow.

In-place upgrade or repair doesn't helps either.

Hmmm. No I meant for a clean wipe and format but using the unattended setup. Or are you saying don’t do unattended and set partition in regular attended setup?

The autounattend.xml files are not completely unattended unless you set them that way. So yes, I'm saying manually set your partitions.

The folders you want to backup(get a bigger external drive for this, 500+GB) are as follows;
C:\Program Files
C:\Program Files (x86)
C:\ProgramData
C:\Users
As well as anything you have in custom folders elsewhere.

I would highly recommend you use a file copying utility to do the files transfers. Example;
Specifically;
However, drag&drop will work. Unstoppable Copier is a bit faster, customizable and more informative.

Well I was hoping for totally completely unattended setup/install and just

Never heard of that utility, but I have used Terracopy before
