Hey all,
I woke up yesterday to find various error messages on my desktop (don't remember the exact messages). After rebooting the PC, it would repeatedly show the BSOD and reboot. I tested my Crucial Tracers with Memtest and they were indeed faulty (that's the 2nd time the Crucial Tracers have died out on me!)
Anyhow, I swapped out the RAM, but now each time the PC reboots, I get the following message (Windows XP SP2):
"
svchost.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x7c883f9c" referenced memory at "0x7c883f9c". The memory could not be written.
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program
"
The message appears a total of 12 times, and starts just as the windows welcome screen appears.
I scanned my computer with KAV2007, and it found a virus in the svchost.exe file. It could not disinfect it, so I chose the delete option. That did not solve the problem.
I tried googling for a solution, but nothing concrete has come up. Here are some other problems:
* None of my drivers work: Internet, sound, forceware, etc. The USB ports do work, since I can attach a USB key and work with it
* It may sound bizarre, but dragging a file from a folder to another does not work. It's as if the copy/cut and paste commands dont work.
* I tried uninstalling some programs (KAV 2007), but Windows Installer fails at all times. I successfully uninstalled Rivatuner 2.08, which doesnt seem to use Windows Installer
* I tried disabling some services by going to Run/Service.msc, but if I right click on a service and choose Properties, nothing happens
* The above is repeated in Safe Mode
Does anyone have a solution to this? It could be that my svchost.exe file is damaged; if so, could I extract it from the Windows XP CD? Or do I have to perform a repair installation of windows? Any other suggestions?
Many thanks guys!
