After moving all 45nm Xeon DP quad core processors from the C-O to the E-0 stepping, Intel announced today that three more 45nm processors will also be upgraded to E-0. The two desktop Core 2 Duo E8400 and E8500 plus the server Xeon E3110 CPUs will all be updated to the E-0 stepping next month. Changes that will come with the E-0 stepping include:

- CPUID will change from 0x10676 to 0x1067A
- Power Status Indicator (PSI) is supported
- PECI implementation change
- New instructions added - XSAVE/XRSTOR
- New ISA extension for save/restoring context of x87, SSE, and future processor state
- New feature added - ACNT2
- Improved mechanism for determining processor utilization. To be used for more efficient P-state determination.
- Package change to Halide free package

The E-0 processors will not require any BIOS updates. They'll be easily recognisable by the new sSpec numbers: SLB9J for E8400, SLB9K for E8500 and SLB9C for E3110.

Will the procs' OC ability change with this?

Will the procs' OC ability change with this?

When they become available you'll find the answer of this question very quick. Usually new stepping means better OC when talking about Intel processors. ;)

Really? In that case ... YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or should i say ... TRIPLE YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

damn and I just bought a E8400...but 4 gHz is all I wanted till I move to liquid cooling.

that all??

I forgot to mention that my PC is so quiet that it is virtually silent. That was my main concern. and I wanted to run my DDR3 at 1800 MHz in sync.

cheers

 I just bought my E8400 2 weeks ago :ohwell:

The E-O stepping will allow for better overclocking performance. Unfotunately i already have some old stock :(
Trade in anyone ?

It's a good thing I have a Q6700 for a backup. Time to sell the E8500. I'm assuming the E8600 coming later in the summer will be E0 as well? That's the one I'm really looking forward to. :rockout:

What happens now is that sales of currently stocked Wolfdale could drop. People would wait for the new stepping. And some could sell their current Wolfdale chips as soon as these release. Expect several [FS] threads.
