the cards run very cool (as mine shows) its just that the stock cooler is crap.

I have an accelero S1 with the turbo module and my gts512 at stock idles at 40c, your 25c is awsome:eek:

do you live in a freezer or something lol

Yeah I have an accelero s1 + 2 120mm fans on my gts 512 as well and it let me overclock a lot more compared to stock cooler :rockout:

Ah makes sense lol, I knocked a good 15c idle and around 15- 20c load with the accelero, awsome bit of kit for the cash, I had a thermalright gt on my 3870, dunno if that would do any better a job price performance wise.

temps are fine for an evga 8800GT. my overclocked evga 8800GS (similar) idles at around 48c in a hot / warm room at 60% fan speed and a strong case fan blowing on it. it'll go to 60c under load with the same set up at 100% fan speed. without the case fan it idles at around 56c and can reach 70c under load, 100% fan speed. its fine

once when i was experimenting with modded drivers the fan quit for awhile and i didn't even know. card was at 94c at idle lol

man that was scary but it came through it ok

I think my card might be dead now anyway, everytime I boot up Vista it just makes the screen go all strange and multicoloured and resets the computer. Even if I boot in safe mode it just dies, I have had to reinstall my old 8600GT's in SLi, but it just ain't nowhere near as good!!!

I have an 850Watt power supply with 2 6pin plugs for graphics cards, so I wouldn't have thought that would be a problem. What d'you think???

that depends entirely on the brand and quality of the PSU

My PSU is Atrix 800W Black Silent PSU 15cm Fan 2 x PCIe 6-pin Connectors. It has 2 +12v rails which put out 19Amps each, all the reviews I've read say that it's a pretty good & stable PSU.

my 600W has 4x18A

that 800W must be peak values, since mine has more amperage.

I dont know anything about Atrix, its not one of the large brand names so i'm almost ready to call it a generic.

we shoul wait for someone with more PSU knowledge to pop up in here - got a link to the PSU and its specs?

I bet the combined total possible simultaneous 12v amperage on that psu is about 32A, which is OK for an 8800GT, but it is most certainly not a 850w psu. It's a 550w at best. Considering how far they have overrated it, I would say it's basically a generic. A new psu would be high on my upgrade list if I were you.

PS is pretty crappy according to a quick google search of a few things. could be an issue. perhaps test it if you can? or after eliminating a couple other things just pop a spare one in or order a better one and see whats up. ypu should probably have a better one, anyway

a stout 600w to 750w should be fine for just about any set up from now until forever

I'm sorry if I sound a bit thick, but looking at the specs for this power supply of mine it doesn't sound too bad, what should I look out for in a good PSU??? Is my 800W no good, or is there not enough amperage on the 12v rails??? Please explain so that I can make a more informed decision in the future.

12V rail amperage is one of the most important things.

When looking for a good PSU brand should come first, then amperage and efficiency.

Amps are something that changes fairly often (hardware is taking more and more power) but i'd look for a unit with at LEAST 22A per rail - mine has 18A per rail, but as it has 4 of them i consider it fine.

Next time, you should do more research before buying a new power supply.

For example, Corsair VX550 or Corsair HX520 are good power supplies for your computer, if you aren't planning to go SLI. Sometimes you can think that the price diference is big, but it is so worth it. I've exchanged a shitty PSU that I had on my computer for a Corsair VX450. It's dead silent and it does it job perfectly.

There are more good power supplies for your computer, but the ones I've put there are from my personal preference.

well from looking at the specs i would say your 800w PS is lacking. it has two 12v rails each rated at 19 amps. now i'm not a genius with these things but i know a good 750w to 800w PS should have at least a single 12v rail with a minimum 60amps on it, or three or four 12v rails with a combined minimum if 60+ amps on it. to supply good power

the fact you have an 800w PS with only 19amps on both 12v rails doesn't mean its a bad PS necessarily, but if they cut corners there they probably did elsewhere, too. plus as another poster said, he suspects it might be a 600w PS from the spec label. i don't know what your label says, 800w or 600w....but my 500w PS has 22amps on each 12v rail, to give you an idea

so far as what brand to buy and what is a good PS? lots of good answers will come your way here. there are no guarantees, but i've learned some brands are more reliable then others, use better "internals," and perhaps most of all have earned good reputations among builders and box makers alike

a couple of myths is you have to spend over $100 for a good PS. not necessarily true, although if looking at 700w and above you most likely will. but from 600w to 700w bargains can be had. this unit from Antec, for instance:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371015

if you NEED the power (which i doubt unless you are making a moon launch) something like these would be fine:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817256009
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006

they're on sale. i'm not sure what part of the world you are in because prices can vary, but i think something comparable can be had just about anywhere. and something is always on sale. so far as what makes these PS's good, here are a couple reviews:

http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews.php?type=3&id=124&page=1&desc=silverstone_strider_750w_st75f_psu
http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=474

so that is just an example. look for a maker with a good reputation and a supply with good professional reviews, make sure you get what you need so far as power, and make your best choice based on need / price.

a helpful list so far as choosing a more reliable brand / model is right here:

http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/101922.aspx

as you can see ATRIX (your brand) is "not recommended" across all its model lines. so its something you may want to avoid. again, some people use these and they are fine, others use better and they crap out. but in the world of PS's its always better to go with reputation for quality right off the bat imo

My POV 8800 GT is running at 64C idle, but seems to have some kind of spack attack at 75-80C and turns off my computer, any idea's how to fix this as it's starting to really P%*$ me off!!!

i just saw this while browsing the thread

my evga 8800GS does something similar at those temps. once it hits 75c to 80c the driver has crashed. on Vista the picture / game comes back after a few seconds or so, if you have XP idk? it might turn the computer off. my computer has rebooted a couple times from it, but its not usual. and THAT isn't a PS issue for me

just FYI

My Silverstone PSU is 800Watt with a single 12v rail its rated at 62a if i rememeber exactly, i love my PSU its rock solid, never heard my PSU complain about its job.

My friend has a 650Watt Silverstone PSU,a nd he is 54a on the 12 volt rail.

I agreee with psychotronn and i believe that single rail PSU's are way better than a multi rail PSU.

hey since we're discussing PS's a little itt i was wondering how warm should one get when under heavy load like playing GRID maxed out? mine blows a good amount of warm air out the back, but not warmer then my single case fan does out the back. at idle it barely blows anything at all

also the bottom of it in a certain area gets kinda hot. not hot hot...just really warm. i think this is because my cpu heatsink / fan is pretty close to it, though

anyway just wondering. and i suppose some of the warmth coming through the PS is case heat, too. not just heat generated from the PS alone

so how 'bout it?
