Hi,
I was reading the thread about 8800GT overclocking, and it mentioned that you shouldn't run the memory over 1950Mhz or it might kill it. Does anyone know if it was certain modules that had these issues, or was it all of the 8800GT's (cannot remember which forum i was read about this on.) Does it make a difference if it is the newer G92 8800's or was it an issue with all GT's

My card does 1000Mhz on the memory (2000Mhz)stable, but I don't want to kill it.
I have a screenshot of a memory chip on my card if it helps tell if it's safe to run at that speed.

Thanks :)

i dont think you will kill it, i had my 8800GTS 512 memory running at 1053 (2106 effective). And i think i've seen some memory overclocks on this forum on GT & GTS that are even highrer than mine. Just make sure the RAM is cooled properly with copper ramsinks if you are using aftermarket cooling. If its a stock cooler just make sure you have good airflow in the video card area.

Been trying to find out where I read about it, to double check. I think it said for 24/7 use run below 950(1900) or somthing. And it was ok to bench higher. But they would die if it was constantly at 1000Mhz+.

Not using stock cooler, but I have a 120mm fan blowing through the heatsink, onto the chips. Will keep the overclock down, until I get some heatsinks for them then, thanks for the tip.

I don't think they can die, unless there is too much heat in them, and when there is too much heat, it will artifact, so I shouldnt worry about it, you are just raising the frequency, not the voltage.

+ They are rated at 2000Mhz as far as I know.

I've seen some did 2.5GHz and no damage but it was on water!!. Well if it's stable you won't have problems.

Well from your photo it shows the model number of the GDDR3 chip to be a QMonda HYB18H512321BF-10. A quick search on Google gave me this result direct from the QMonda website: http://www.qimonda.com/graphics-ram/gddr3/index.html?wsref=Graphics DRAM/Graphics DRAM GDDR3:1 According to this the RAM on your card is rated at 1ns(or 1Ghz) and in most cases can achieve stable clocks past that rating. As far as the subject of damaging your memory, as has been stated the major things that affect reliablity/durability are heat and/or voltage, raising clocks in and of itself won't damage a healthy chip. If you feel unsure of yourself in regards to overclocking the best thing to do is check the Overclocking & Cooling section of these forums as there are ample guides/threads that provide helpful info on many aspects of overclocking. :toast:

i have never seen ram, or vram die from being simply overclocked. Perhaps the peopel in question were uppingthe voltage to the ram to get it stable at the spped they were hitting, but just a stock voltage overclock has yet to actually harm any hardware I have ever encountered.

Ive run @ 790 / 1850 / 2100 24/7 stable before, anything over 2000 should be fine with decent cooling :toast:

i have those ic on my 512gts and they do 1100 all day aslong as i keep them under 50c, im sure if i vmodd'd them they would go higher with better cooling.

you will normally get dodgey textures in game if your vmem is near the edge of stability.

Does it make a difference if it is the newer G92 8800's or was it an issue with all GT's

Afaik there is only one 8800GT which is the G92. The ones which are G80 are the 8800GTS.

I did get mine to 2000 for benchmarking. I think it might even be more.... I have to check JBunch's thread, the Alcpone 3Dmark06...

I've heard this too, supposedly the GT and 512 GTS had very finicky circuit traces that are prone to some sort of erosion. My 1024 GTS shipped with 2100 MHZ default but it was a custom PCB.

Samsung's are supposed to clock higher than qimondas, also if i remember correctly qimondas can potentially clock higher with less vmem.

the highest i've benched on my g92 gts was 1161 (2322)

you can chekc my stats, and my sig is ther max stable oc i got on my 8800GT as far as i know evga cards clock better well the more you spend anyways, SSC goes farther then the KO, and KO goes farther then the plane 8800 GT
