NVIDIA Convinced by Board Partners Not to Rename 9800 GT to GTS 240

Following the news we covered just last month of NVIDIA's plans to rename the 9800 GT to GTS 240, despite the fact the 9800 GT was little more than a renamed 8800 GT, it seems the GPU board partners have managed to convince NVIDIA not to follow through with this name change. There had been much controversy over NVIDIA's renaming scheme even here on our forums, but in a confidential email seen by DailyTech, NVIDIA has cancelled plans to rename the chip yet again. Instead there will now be three versions of the 9800 GT, one of which includes the feature updates due to be present in the GTS 240. There will be the green edition, which we had already heard news of some time ago, which has no need for external power connectors, there will be the standard version, and then an OC version, which although details are not yet confirmed, one would imagine the card would be clocked at the GTS 240 expected speeds of 675/1688/2200 MHz.

i can say that board partners like BFG really dont like this, sure it would sell more cards but its a pain in the ass, to many diffrent models of the same damn thing to deal with support on, also deal with packeging and shit, its just a clusterfuck.

If you're going to rename your product line, at least be consistent. Now most of the cards will be using the GTX or GTS prefix, except the 9800GT.

No, the FX line will be renamed with the prefix 'POS'.

I thought they had rebranded it as the Heatmaster 1000 space heater a long time ago. That thing kept rooms as toasty as a fireplace. Was really good at simulating the "rushing wind" sound effect while you were playing Flight Simulator, too.

Nvidia is still renaming the 9800GT the GTS240, only they're also letting the 9800GT exist. Maybe there's a ton of 9800GT's sitting in warehouses, and this is their way of allowing that backlog to be sold without the 9800GT getting the discontinued or obsolete tag? How many cards are they going to put in a $30-40 window? I wouldn't be surprised to see deep discounts on the 9800GT (Galaxy was recently selling one for $70 after MIR) and for the sku to fade from existence.

If Joe Sixpack buys a rebadged card and found out, would he blame Nvidia or would he blame usually the biggest logo on the box which is usually the Manufactures name. Being Joe Sixpack I would blame the company which manufactured the card, probably shop for a different card next time, and if he's pissed off enough he might even see RED.

Being Joe Sixpack I would blame the company which manufactured the card, probably shop for a different card next time, and if he's pissed off enough he might even see RED.

Most average users are super happy with their new graphics card upgrade because they rarely upgrade so when they do the performance increase is substantial no matter what they choose. Just look at some of the reviews on the online retail sites, 'wow, this HD4350 is the bee's knees it wipes the floor with my X300!'.

This effort was a waste of time and money, and the recession just goes to show you that humans dont really learn from mistakes or past occurances.

There should be a government body that fires staff members from companies that are found to be wasting money on stupid shit. Maybe even relocate them to a 3rd world country. PhD that!

Well, the renaming would be fine as long as the prices of the new products don't go up. When the 9800GT was released, the initial prices were actually lower than the 8800GTs out at that time, which I was thankful for considering I sold my 8800GT and got the 9800GT from Palit that also is 55nm and has HybridPower. Don't know if the prices are retroactive with other shops/online shops as well though...
