Intel's Core i7 has proven to be a fitting successor to Intel's higher-end Core 2 series processors, and is the fastest series of microprocessors the industry has to offer. Introduced in three variants: models 920 (2.66 GHz), 940 (2.93 GHz) and 965 XE (3.20 GHz), Intel targeted the sub-$300, sub-$600, and sub-$1100 segments. Due to the reasonably good overclocking potential the chips offer, 920 has been a successful variant due to its price, while 965 XE sold due to the sheer fact that it's a high-end chip with bus multipliers unlocked. The 940, however seems to have fallen in a tough spot, where buyers have to pay almost twice the price of 920 for a small increase in speeds.

To provide a better deal for the sub-$600 segment, Intel is in the works of phasing-out the Core i7 940. In its place, Intel will introduce the Core i7 950. This chip first surfaced in February. Its specifications include clock-speed increased to 3.06 GHz, while retaining the 4.8 GT/s QPI speed. This chip widens the gap between itself and the 920, providing the incentive of a significantly higher bus multiplier (23 x 133 MHz). An increased multiplier value will have its impact on the overclocking potential. As for 940, the company will continue taking orders from channel vendors till September 4th, in both tray and boxed forms, which will be delivered by November 5th and December 4th, respectively.

That didn't take long.

I suspect that the 950 will suffer the same fate unless it is priced below where the current 940 is.
Core i7 is still a very expensive platform to get on to, so the people that do can easily be divided into 2 groups: one with oodles of cash that will get the 965 (and top-of-the-line gear to go with it); and the other that will go for the 920 because it overclocks like a champ and is therefore better value than anything above it.
Therefore I don't see anyone going for the 950 at twice the price. Unless it overclocks like a true champion and is to i7 what the Q6600 D0 was to Core 2. :rockout:

Hmm PhenomII Black Edition looks day by day better and better! :toast:

Why make it about 130mhz faster and expect everyone to buy it. Why not just remove that chip and use it as 920's and 965's and lower the price on them.

Lol, Now i7 940s are gonna be in museums:P
I wonder if they're gonna drop the price on it:)

i7 920 will be just fine for me, just overclock it and it should perform okay.
unless intel put some serious price cut on the i7 940 then it should be tempting Lol :D

the i7 920 out now will be Phased Out to and replaced by a 32nm 920

extreme price for normal core i7 run at 3.06

I think they are doing the right thing, this will help assist their market share even further.

And the 965? when's that gonna die?

Do they still cover the 940 in warranty? My dad's got a 940.

they should:)
cos it's their product, but they would probably let you change the 940 though.

This was an obvious problem with i7... and I think will still be... I guess we must wait and see!

You know, the only thing pushing more to i7 is the fact that that motherboards do both Crossfire and SLi, other than that I'm perfectly happy with my 775 Quad and don't really see the need to upgrade to i7...

Do they still cover the 940 in warranty? My dad's got a 940.

Yes, just because a product is EOL doesn't mean the warranty that was promised to you when you bought it suddenly goes away.

Though if he ever has to send it in, they might not send a 940 back...

then have to send a 950 back :D

Do they still cover the 940 in warranty? My dad's got a 940.

yes it will be covered under warranty. Normally they will have few in reserve for warranty purposes for atleast 3 yrs from the release date. If they don't have the same cpu they will step up the product to a newer version.

... I think they have to much of the market shares! Intel's been dominating for a long time now :(

then have to send a 950 back :D

Oh darn! I guess we're gonna have to start suicide running when they start selling 950's :p

Oh my 940 suddenly broke right when you don't have anymore 940s... what a coincidence :) the 2V Vcore has nothing to do with it!!! :D
