AMD to Cut HD 4850 Prices to Compensate for HD 4770 Shortages

It seems that in order to make up for the shortages of the now very popular HD 4770, due to TSMC's issues with 40 nm manufacturing, AMD is dropping the prices of the HD 4850 to around the MSRP of the HD 4770. That is around $99.99 US and about €90, this will be putting further pressure on NVIDIA as AMD brings down one of its top GPUs in to the sub-$100 market.

I think we all knew this would happen. TSMC were saying that they were having problems with the 40nm tech before the 4770 was released.

Still, a price cut on the 4850 is a good thing, now if the 4870 would come down even more I could get me crossfire!

Here in AUS, I've so far recommended a gts250 and a 4850 to two friends which were at the same price range as the 4770/9800gt/9600gt.

Hopefully this brings down the price of the GTS 250 cards. They are overpriced in the UK and are a perfect alternative performance wise.

Such an eternal shame ATI can't make stable drivers, but trust me, if you like to have the latest in software development after a while you'll find you should have paid twice to go with someone who can.
On the other hand if you don't mind drivers that are a year old since that's the last stable version then ATI is not a bad choice.

ATi's second latest set of drivers are rock solid stable for me on my desk-top and the final release for my X1250 on the lappy are also stable (well, they were before I nuked vista from the partition, not seen 'em on 7 yet.), only reason I've not updated the drivers on the desktop is that I've not used the computer for ~ a month due to school issues.

I'm sorry but I've had a x1900xt then later and now a HD4850, and the last troublefree drivers I was able to keep installed are the 8.7's, in other words 9 months old, I use XP64 though and two monitors one CRT and one LCD, the 8.9 through 9.4's simply bluescreened XP64, the 9.5's get past boot and can even run a game,. but any change on the monitor setup or display primary swap causes havoc and often cores the system, and with any bad luck find it booting without a usable display so you need to F8 to get into your system/

So if that's your definition of a nvidiot..
I incidentally moved to ATI after a long while suffering under nvidia's driver issues and crap, so I'm not really fully in either camp, I just wish they both found a way to get competent coders, and found a way to get schools to teach would-be coder to learn to test what they produce and take note of feedback and use that to fix things, and to not change what isn't broken into something that is, and then ignore reports of people for months/years, people who not only report issues but even what file has the issue and where the problem lies
And ATI even installs an event handler that produces reports, and when people relay that info they simply don't want to hear and know about it, same for nvidia, their forums also were about deflection as I recall.

But it's nice for you that you haven't reached the inevitable bitter state you will reach eventually, enjoy it while it lasts.

OK, sorry about that then, I was rather pissed off at other things when I posted that, I guess that's the nature of the beast though using XP64 (my friend used it for a few months before he bought vista but the compatability issues just took the piss). Companies never seem overly keen to provide more support than they absolutely must and I guess they see you as being in an insignificant minority (XP 64 bit user I mean). See kids, THIS is why you list your system specs so angry people don't call you an NVidiot.
