Unbeknownst to other markets, ATI AIB partners have been working on full-fledged lineups of graphics cards based on the Radeon HD 4860 GPU, a brand that seems to be specific to the Chinese market. Sapphire developed a new premium offering based on the GPU, called Sapphire HD 4860 Platinum, that intends to be a cut above the rest with its cooling and better power stability. The card in many respects looks similar to "Vapor-X" branded offerings based on other GPUs, by Sapphire.

The card sports a dual-slot design with a custom PCB by Sapphire. The PCB includes a 5+2 phase VRM which draws power from two 6-pin PCI-E connectors. The RV790-based Radeon HD 4860 GPU has 640 stream processors, and has core/memory clock-speeds of 700/750 MHz. With its 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, it connects to 512 MB of memory. The GPU is cooled by a robust heatpipe-fin array based GPU cooler. On the connectivity front, the card provides DVI-D, HDMI, and DisplayPort. It is available for RMB 799 (US $117) in China. More pictures can be found at the source.

Looks and sounds like a 4870 Toxic but with only 640 shaders instead of 800. I know the 2nd gen XFX 4830's either came with 800 shaders or could be unlocked to 800 so wonder if we will have the pleasure of finding this out for ourselves.

Seem's almost useless to be honest.....I may not be the only one who thinks this..

At those clocks, the card is slower than the HD4850, so the naming is bad.

They should have called it HD4840 or something.

Its a HD4830 with GDDR5

its faster than a HD4850

Think of it more as a 4770 with 256-bit bus, and 4770 :nutkick: 4850.

I'll stick with my trusty 4850 till the 5850 comes out and drops in price a bit OOO

Is there a review/gpu-z screenshot of this yet? Even though this is only for the Chinese market, I'm curious as to what it's specifics of the 4860 are.

You're not the only one. With a new launch on the horizon we want some midrange cards in this performance segement made off the new DX11 bits and smaller process.... not the 5th card based on the same gpu (4830, 4850, 4870, 4890) in a segement where $15 already gets you to the next step up.

Bring on the HD5650 and HD5770!

That would be a HD5770.

I don't think the HD4860 has a 40nm GPU while the HD4770 does. :nutkick:

That is not the point, 40nm does not directly contribute to performance:nutkick:
The only thing it does is lowering the power consumtion and heat, as a result might allow higher OCs.

The 5770 is likely to kick even the 4870 in the nuts, my guess is it will be close to the 4890.
So my point still holds true.

I didn't notice it has GDDR5.

Yeah it's faster than the HD4850, easily.

I am holding out for the 4865

So much for only the Chinese market, Newegg now has them for $129.99 each or 118.99 for 2 or more... sounds like an interesting budget x-fire choice!

At that price, one might as well get a HD5750 or a HD4870, IMO.

Well 4870's are $175, 2 of these shipped is $238, 5850's are $310 when you can find them and we all know the entire 48X0 series scales well in x-fire so to me it would make an interesting option, not necc the best for everyone, I agree. But also keep in mind the 4860 in x-fire prob beats a single 4890 fairly handily for only a few bucks more.
