Maybe someone can remember how we told you that Microsoft Vista will boost the adoption of SATA optical drives very soon. Today Samsung is about to proof that with the introduction of its new WriteMaster SH-S183L: the first 18X Serial ATA DVD burner on the market today. With its SATA interface, the SH-S183L eliminates the need for Master/Slave jumper settings and provides thinner data cables, improving airflow and cable routing. The SH-S183L offers transfer rates of 150MB/s, 300MB/s and 600MB/s, making it one of the fastest drives on the market today. The drive also integrates Lightscribe technology, which enables users to print images onto the surface of a DVD. The SH-S183L is shipping nationwide with an Estimated Street Price of $89.99.

Still rediculous on price. It's still cheaper to buy an IDE DVD burner and a IDE-to-SATA bridge to plug onto the back of it. Unnoticable, and just as effective.

So in essence, the faster data transfer bus speeds, means instead of waiting like 2 hours to burn a backup DVD (or 4 minutes to burn a movie AFTER you convert it) I can burn it in like 15 minutes and 2 minutes? That alone is worth it. Still not expensive for a Dvd drive even though I got me a new lightscribe drive from samsung

THe ones out are mostly using a built in IDE-SATA converter and don't take advantage of the extra speed. This drive is taking full advantage of it and I'd buy one in a second. Too bad it will take forever to come into stock in Canada.

what are you talking about? the sata interface wont make anything noticably faster, as a drive doesnt saturate a full IDE interface.

and since when does it take 2 hours to burn a DVD image? takes me less than 4 minutes with my 18x samsung drive.

people are dumb when it comes to sata. they think just because the theoretical maximum bandwidth is 150mb/s and 300mb/s it will be any faster. it wont be. hard drives cant even saturate the IDE U133 interface with unbuffered reads/writes.

and the fact that they claim this supports 600mb/s transfer is pointless, first off no chipset supports a 600mb/s sata connection, and two, i doubt the drives cache even breaks 100mb/s.


BUT, all of this is pointless considering the drive only supports sata150. and NOT the speeds claimed in that article, a simple visit to samsungs site will show.

to end it, this drive is nothing special.

i guess it would depend on what speed your burning at and if it dual layer or not? i think dual layer only burns at 2.4x?

Samsungs are not, Plextors are not, LGs are not using a converter.
