When a child is hospitalized, the experience is anything but normal. However, recent studies show that video games can help children feel calmer during treatment. In a particular case, doctors tested whether or not video games helped children forget the pain of an intravenous line insertion. By inserting the IV needle when children were playing a game with vibrating controller and headset, children felt almost a quarter of the pain that children who were not playing video games felt.

When Nintendo found out about this, they put some serious R&D into hospital "Fun Centers". Nintendo supplies 3500 of the 5000+ Fun Centers that are in various hospitals. The Fun Centers are run through Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation, whose aim is to combat the isolation and fear experienced by hospitalized kids. A $3250 donation will buy a Fun Center featuring a Game Cube, DVD player, a flat screen television, and the lifetime upkeep of the unit. Nintendo looks forward to updating all the Fun Centers it owns with the Nintendo Wii in mid 2007.

Cool, at least when the children mame themselves with the Wii-mote they wont have to go far for treatment  (that was a joke btw, its a good idea ;) )

when i was in the hospital this summer- i was in a children's hospital that treats 21-year-olds and younger- we had ps2's and i sat and played katamari and sonic heroes and nfsu2, and i even had my parents bring me some of my games from home and my mem cards and i played through san andreas.... in a hospital.

it wasnt so bad in the hospital when i had the ps2, i cant imagine going through that time again WITHOUT the ps2.... though i did have my psp as well... i had a laptop and i used the hospital's wifi to surf the net and hack my psp....

Very good idea and one that goes to prove Video games are not bad!

IV insertion in arm+vibrating controller = not 1/4 the pain!

LOL

Some nurses can't even get it in the first time.

Just hope they aren't trying for the top of the hand on these kids..

Man, I wish I had that when I went in. All I had was crappy satelite.

So all that is needed is a PC & Battlefield2142. When someone sneaks up on you with knife nurse plugs the needle in, talk about realism xD

Its the future, games that make you actually feel pain :D

and how much money did they spend to figure this out? kinda like how they spend a few million to figure out if prisiners wanted to escape from jail...

...recent reports indicate that kids have 100% more fun at school if they are allowed to play PS2 all day instead of learning the 3 R's. :rockout:

FTW!! Someone smashed my car window and stole my backpack with FFX and FFX-2 in it! :banghead: :banghead: At least I still have my memory card.

well pain is the product of the mind...and when the mind is not thing about pain and getting occupied by games, then pain doesn't exist to the person.

kinda sounds like the matrix ;)

sex is a great pain reliever too.

i second that one!!! sex is great:rockout:

Seeing as your backpack and games were properly concealed where no one could see them. What a stroke of luck that burglar had, considering he had no idea what was in the car.
