By golly, I think you've got it!

Is this PS going to be okay with my oc'd E6300 Wolfdale and the 4870 X2 with an Antec 900 case?

I would think that would be pushing ya luck, as i killed a corsair 620Watt 5months ago with my 4870X2 lol

They say a 650W min to run one of those cards.

I found this on Newegg, for what it's worth.

Pros: big fan, modular, stable

Cons: grey

Other Thoughts: currently runs a 9850 @ 3.2ghz 1.45vcore and a 4870x2 w/ no hiccups at all, the fan barely ever even ramps up and it is facing down in an antec 300. benched the 9850 @ 1.55v 3.5ghz with 4870x2 and 4870 in crossfire w/ this psu and didnt have a problem, couldnt believe it!

I Would honestly go with anything like 650Watts or above and this would aslo cover a possible upgrade to a Quad core in the future?

Cant skimp on PSU its the most important part to a computer :)

By the way, it's $166 shipped. Is that a good deal?

I looked up my invoice on Newegg and this is what I have:

http://store.antec.com/Product/power_supply-earthwatts/ea-650/0-761345-27650-4.aspx

Am I good to go with the 4870X2?

You should be fine with that psu. I run my 4870x2 on a basic buy 750watt psu no probs.

Your E6300 isnt a good match for a 4870x2 tho. When i was running my E5300@4.1 with 2x hd4870 1gb i found some games would get better fps with crossfire disabled. Obveusly the cpu some what bottle necking when using both gpu's.

I now have a E8200@3.8 & a Q6600@3.25 both these run HD4870x2 pretty well. A second hand E8400,E8600 or Q6600 can be found on ebay cheap enough.

Thanks!

Can anyone else weigh in on pairing the E6300 Wolfdale and the 4870X2?

Totally agree with Sir_Real, I think that, even overclocked, that E6300 is too much of a bottleneck for a card like the 4870X2 unfortunately :ohwell:

EDIT: I was fortunate enough to grab this Q9450 on ebay brand new for £150 in October last year, upgrading from a 3.0ghz E2180 (which in itself was a financially forced downgrade from a Q9550); definately worth it!

I think that I'll get the 4870 X2 for $166 USD and then upgrade the mobo/cpu later.

How long before this card is obsolete?

They run a little hot (80c), but compared to the new cards of today like the GTX480/70/60 and GTX580 etc it still runs cooler then those cards (well mine does anyway).

Power consumption is bad as we have talked about before^ but id say the worst thing about this card is the fan noise, it can get very load when working hard.

Apart from that i love this card :)

Thats not to say he shouldnt get a better PSU with more headroom, I'm just saying a 620 will do the job if cash is tight

I do agree with you there, i talked about if my 620 was up to the challenge and most said yes, i think mine just had a fault.

Im just going by what it says on the box of the 4870X2 says a 650 or more but i know thats just to make sure all parts are covered in the build.

4870X2 probably has like stated 2 years left of solid performance. It has the muscle to run the newer games.

It eats power tho, comparable current gen cards put it to shame in that category.

If you can get it for $150 then I'd say its a good purchase, your cpu is a bottleneck. Even with the OC the other intagibles (cache, etc..) hold it back. Thats a 775 socket (i think) so a e8400 is a good solid dual core, or for quad a q9550 should last a few more years as far as gaming is concerned.

Overall I'd say go for it, then get a new cpu for the next gift purchase. (either new socket or grab one of the ones i mentioned above)
