Hynix DDR Shipment Hijacked in Taiwan

A batch of about NT$20 million (US$306,000) worth of DDR chips (from Hynix Semiconductor) was stolen yesterday in Taoyuan, Taiwan. The 20 boxes filled with DDR chips were robbed while in transit, with most of the chips being 400MHz frequency parts. This DDR chips were being delivered to distributors, though ownership of the chips is still unknown. A Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report cited sources as saying that three robbers staged an accident with the truck transporting the chips, and then subdued the driver using a machete and taser gun. The thieves were seen headed to the airport and the batch of chips are likely headed to China, the report said.

What's the point of stealing chips? Won't these be easy to track if they're used in any item?

Other sides may be involved in this crime. It's not necessary to resell them...this could be a sabotage.

Sabotage? More like plain old stealing for profit. They will just re-badge the chips with smiley faces or something and then put them on shitty pcb's and sell them in street markets for uber cheap.

Some idiot probably just wanted a ransom for them or something. It doesnt make sense, you cant use the chips by themselves unless you know how to make memory and have the pcbs to put them on and such.

LOL!!! The first part of that article made me nearly thing we are talking about drugs...
I am guessing these guys are probably from some cheap company, next thing you know we have some crappy graphics company that produces GPUs that use stolen S3 Virge chips.

This is just to rate the stupidity of the stolen chips.

Ha ha like fake rolexes, except way nerdier. "Hey kid wanna buy some RAM? It stocks at DDR2 800, but I've seen it go to DDR2 1066" . And then the kid buy their RAM off the street and wonder why their compy won't turn on, ignoring the dripping hot glue they used to attach stolen hynix memory to PCB...lol.
