While both the Microsoft Xbox360 and Nintendo Wii support force feedback, the Sony PS3 somehow lacks anything like it. And so, it is no surprise that the Sony PS3 cannot support force feedback steering wheels. Sony explains it rather vaguely:
"All PS3 games are programmed for the Sixaxis which doesn't have force feedback, therefore the force feedback in the wheels won't be recognized."
Basically, Sony is saying that programming force feedback into PS3 games is not possible, due to the difficulty to adding an additional layer of programming to the "Sixaxis". Sony's lack of force feedback support may have something to do with the 2003 lawsuit brought against Sony by Immersion, and the judge's denial of Sony's subsequent appeal.

No they gave it up to avoid lawsuits.

Exactly. I was reading about them getting sued in a magazine this morning, I'll post what they said about it when I get back to the office, don't have the magazine with me.

*Edit:
WIREDTEST 2007 (by Wired Magazine) said:
...the controller lacks rumble functionality, probably due to Sony's recent patent-infringement loss to Immerson, a maker of force-feedback tech.

Unfortunately, Company X (cant remember who) holds the patent for force-feedback and SONY didnt want to license it, due to cost.

Wow... Sony, what are you trying to do? Making bad games and not supporting force feedback won't sell the PS3's

Yes, whatever the used for force feedback was copyrighted. However, consoles these days are just short of expected to have a "rumble pack" of some sort. Sony could have found some other way to do it, but that would have pushed the release date even further back. Basically, Sony is stuck in a rut :p.

That sucks, motion in the ps3 just isnt like the Wii. Id rather have rumble and no motion, than motion and no rumble.

sony will eventually get it right. start banging the consoles out, throw enough money to bribe some developers to make a few decent games for it, and all the while while folk are kept happy with a few games sony work on some sort of rumble feature, and hopefully improve the motion software, as no doubt currently it must suck balls.
