Pirate Bay wants to buy Sealand

In a story completely unrelated to yesterday's news about Wal-Mart and The Pirate Bay Torrent site, it has been revealed that the site is planning to buy its own country. Having its own country will mean it can wave goodbye to copyright laws, with the site recently coming under fire from US firms regarding copyright enforcement. The location The Pirate Bay wants is a former WWII gun platform now known as the Principality of Sealand, which is located just off the UK coast. This is a very interesting new approach to bypassing copyright laws, and even if it fails The Pirate Bay does have other locations as reserves - the project will be funded by £100m which the site hopes to raise via donations from users who will automatically become citizens of the principality.

Update: on The Pirate Bay's website is now has the name Pirates of Sealand!

Sealand has been trying to sell its services to data pirates for years. It's a really funny place, google it and read up on it. They've been trying to get recognized as a soverign entity but everyone just ignores them.

Well, it is actually debated as to whether it is independant from the UK... some argue it is, others argue it isn't. TPB must be fairly confident that it will be able to do as it pleased there either way, otherwise it wouldn't be interested in such a huge investment. Maybe they do just like the sea image associated with it?

I dont think that the little principality will be a country.. thats crazy.
It will simply be a place outside of any other country, and thus not dictated by ANY laws. You can kill anyone u want there and nothing will happen to u, and best of all No Tax! That is, if u can find someone selling anything there.
