A standard PC power supply

How does a power supply work? Why is it important to choose a sufficiently powerful and efficient model? We guide you through discussions of efficiency and tips for getting the best deal before we go on to explain why less can be more in the PSU market.

This piece is for the folks who'd like to learn more about about the facts, technologies, and terminology behind PC power supplies.

This is quite a nice detailed article on the basics of PC power supplies.

EDIT

Frick pointed out in post 9 that TPU have an awesome article on the same subject: A Detailed Look Into PSUs

Thanks, Q! But that photo is far from a 'standard' PSU... Two pairs of speaker connectors?! The return of the mad german scientists!

Indeed, it's not quite "standard" at all, but that picture was in the article and I just couldn't resist the gag. :)

Glad you found that article helpful. :toast:

yeah that picture looks to be of an old valve amplifier

Weird. I hit 545 watts full load with a similar system but with a lowly 470 on the OCCT psu test. Wonder what they used for loading.

I've read through this article and it's pretty solid. Why don't you do the same instead of making unfounded criticism and spreading FUD?

LOL -- Its Tomshardware.

They are the Kings of FUD next to FUDzilla.

One should not take what Tomshardware says seriously. everyone knows that

Will read it later and see how it compares to the article we have here on the same subject, which is excellent.

EDIT: Ok, they might be kinda different. Looks like they woulc complement each other.

And is Tom's really that bad? Didn't the bad stuff happen years ago?
