One of Sony's most promoted features in the PS3 is it's backwards compatibility. Unfortunately, when the PS3 was first released, it hardly could boast this. Classic PS2 and PS1 games would be presented as garbled lines of text instead of something playable. In a firmware release that brings the console to version 1.5, Sony has fixed almost all compatibility issues, with exception to a very small amount of isolated cases. Any older game you run on the PS3 will be presented with a higher clarity than on the PS1 or PS2.

Cool, sony is doing something right it seems. Now they just need to lower the damn price and get some killer apps out and they should be back in the race.

if they'd just drop the price i'd be happy

Agreed, if these were priced at $400 for the 60GB version I bet these would fly off the shelves. IMO, Sony really needs to swallow their pride and price these things reasonably/competitively. I know they are already taking a hit on these and hoping to make the money back in software sales, but if they aren't selling any software because they aren't selling any consoles, they can't make any money.

Even at the prices Sony are selling PS3s right now they are losing money, so I doubt they will lower the price so that they will lose even more.

problem is that even at current prices they are selling these things at a loss of profit (or so i remember reading) so lowering the price to something more competitive would only make them loose more money (right?) (edit: doh! above post beat me to the point lol)

the ps3's specs have allot of potential (so does the xbox 360s) but with the high cost of the ps3 and the non willingness of Microsoft to open up the 360 to things like Linux it doesn't look like they will ever get very close to their full range of potential

that cell processor i hear is hard to code for as well which is a drawback the the most appealing feature of the ps3 (to me) its ability to double as a Linux pc/Linux media center pc
i hear the performance of ppc distros on the ps3 is comparable to that of a low end pentium 3 ...so not much point of buying it to run linux on it aye? :p

not much point in buying it at at all:roll:

wii or 360 FTW

This is cool. FFXII should look even more beautiful now ::rofl:: Yeah, if they go to 450 or 500 on the 60gb, that would be a little better. IF they take a hit, they can make a huge profit on games and accessories. ::shrug:: just my reasoning.

Linux is so low on the totem pole, that it has absolutely no effect on sales of a console. I mean give me a break. People are buying consoles to play games, not to hack it apart. It may appeal to you, but you are in the .00000000001% and that is being conservative.

WTF are they talking about?
PS3 doesn't upscale old generation games like the 360.
PS3 will make ps2 games look as good as it would on a ps2, fixed from looking like garbage.

////quote Any older game you run on the PS3 will be presented with a higher clarity than on the PS1 or PS2///quote

The PS3 is supposed to upscale older games to at least 720p. possibly 1080i, I am not sure which one it is. And just like the PS2 would improve the way textures looked on PS1 games(sometimes) the PS3 will do the same but with both PS1 and PS2 games this time.

Even at the prices Sony are selling PS3s right now they are losing money, so I doubt they will lower the price so that they will lose even more.

I do believe the Sony is losing money on the consoles right now, but I don't believe they are losing nearly as much as most people think. Most of the analyst sites put the PS3 costing Sony $800 to make, but they also use retail prices for a lot of the parts. I refuse to believe that Sony is paying retail prices for parts on orders of 1,000,000+ units, to believe that is insane. All the estimates that we see on how much electronics cost to manufacture are just that, estimates. No one, except Sony, knows for sure how much they are losing per console.

However, my point was that they planned to make the difference back in game sales. However, if they can't sell the consoles then they can't sell the games. They need to get the consoles off the shelves if they want to even break even with game sales and right now the only way it seems they will do that is to price the thing competitively. I know it offers a lot more than the other consoles in terms of features, but normal consumers aren't sitting in the stores comparing feature for feature on these consoles. All they are doing it saying "Well this one plays games for $600, and this one plays them for $400, and this one plays them for $250, I'll take the one for $250. Wait that one is sold out, I'll take the one for $400."

Read the game forums and game sites Newtekie, PS3 does not upscale old games. if it did I would have bought one already.

Your negative attitude isn't helping anyone, newbelieves.

Well it gets annoying when newtekie keeps on avocating the PS3 with false information like PS3 can upscale, blueray has the fastest transfer speeds?

The guy doesn't even own a ps3 if he doesn't know it can't upscale.

Senior member or not he has no clue to what he is talking about when it comes to PS3.

Notice I said SUPPOSED to upscale, I didn't say it actually did. Try reading the entire post and not just skipping words so you have something to argue about. It really is annoying.

Yes, the Blu-ray(spell it right, if you are going to argue about something and pretend you know what you are talking about you should probably figure out how to spell it as a first step) drive has faster average transfer speeds than the 16x DVD drive in the xbox360. While the max transfer speed of the 16x drive is faster than the Blu-ray drive, it rarely gets anywhere close to that speed, it transfers more in the 6-8x range the large majority of the time, while the Blu-Ray drive is able to provide an almost constant 2x speed, so in actual real world use the Blu-Ray drive does in fact provide faster data transfer speeds. I let this issue drop in the last topic you were picking fights in because it wasn't worth arguing at the time, but since you really want to bring it back up I will defend myself this time.

You are one to talk about actually owning the system and knowing what you are talking about.

I guess its okay for me to tell the public the 2006 Acura Accord is SUPPOSED to fly in the clouds possibly into outer space, I am not sure which one it is.

Even the way you quote is annoying and disruptive... It is like the more you are losing the argument by the more annoying and distrupive you try to be which takes me back to zekrahminator's assessment.

Anyway, I don't remember Acura making that claim about the Accord, on the other hand Sony has made that claim about the PS3.

I am done here, if you can't make a valid agument and want to just keep arguing for argument sake I don't really have any reason to continue.

So all your knowledge of PS3 comes from Sony's claims? lol

Thats all I needed to know.

I was just making sure no one is misleaded by your false information into purchasing a PS3 based on it being able to upscale their collection of PS2/PS1 games.

I think this argument has made it clear to readers PS3 does NOT upscale old games

Care to point out exactly where you are pulling that from?

No, you were arguing to argue, you don't care about what people reading believe, they aren't buying the consoles based on what two people say in a forum. They aren't going to read my statement that the PS3 is supposed to upscale older games and run out to the store and buy the console because of it. Get real.

Ugh, don't say I didn't warn you.
