AREA Intros USB2GLAN Ethernet Cable

Japanese peripherals maker AREA PC introduced a nifty little network controller called the USB2GLAN. Simply put, it's a network controller that plugs into a USB 2.0 port on one side, and gives out a gigabit Ethernet connection on the other. Needless to say, the 1000 Mbps Ethernet connection will be bottlenecked by the 480 Mbps USB 2.0 interface, but it's still a fair bit faster than 100 Mbps Ethernet. The main unit measures 57 x 14 x 14 mm, the short cable is about 8 cm long, the whole thing weighs 23 g, and is self-contained, as it draws power from the USB port. It works plug-and-play on Windows and MacOSX. It is priced at 2,480 JPY (US $32).

Most of the people wouldn't give a damn about that bottleneck, not everyone has 1 Gbps teh interwebz anyway.

Nearly all modern motherboards/laptops have onboard LAN. If you're using it for internet only there is no point in upgrading to Gbit in the first place. If you have a reason to upgrade to Gbit you apparently do care. That leaves few situations in which this has any value.

The USB-to-Ethernet adapter on your MacBook Air has been giving you a 100Mbit connection for years....

Many ultrabook designs are too thin to accommodate an RJ-45 jack (like the MacBook Air mentioned above). You need an adapter like this to use a wired Ethernet connection.

What are you talking about?! I stream BluRay movies to my TV through an 100mbps lan cable; did a performance check while the movie was playing and the connection was ~8-9% occupied. So in theory, you can stream full HD even on a 10mbps connection

no way in hell. you need at least 4-5MB/s for a compressed video (which you use), and 10Mb lan only does 1.25MB/s.


unless you mean low quality compressions like youtube.
