The computing industry will see its next transition to a new memory standard only by 2014, and enterprise processors based on the "Haswell" microarchitecture will drive the change, according to a VR-Zone report. While client processors based on the Haswell architecture will retain current DDR3 memory standard with a possibility of higher DDR3 clock speeds, enterprise processors under the "Haswell-EX" family will feature the industry's first DDR4 memory controllers for x86. Following that, DDR4 will filter down to future client platforms. Pictured below, is a DDR4 UDIMM by Samsung.

It's about time!.... Oh... 2014 you say.

Oh no. By the time I upgrade to DDR3 then DDR4 will be round the corner! :o

if haswell enterprise has it there will be a minute chance that haswell desktop has it, cool, i wonder what low voltage ddr4 will be running at?

I just noticed your still on ole 775 hardware. That stuff keeps on ticking!

Yup. Running 2 C2D DDR2 systems here - one 9800GTX+, one HD6850. Both run every game I've tried without complaint, and I only really use my PCs for that and office work, so why upgrade?

Yup, Haswell, I think is going to be late 2013, another socket change here we come ;)

LOL we all knew it was coming! They need to just invent a socket adapter that would allow any intel chip to be put in any intel motherboard..........

DDR4? why not more USB3\SATA3 ports? way more... why not more PCIE lanes? something? This is so god damn stupid of you intel.

Why do I have a feeling this will be the end of cheap ram and why do I also feel this is the sole reason behind DDR4?

as per a 2011 report

Ditto! Well, perhaps I'll be on the IB bandwagon come this winter. I'm still having fun with my E8600, what can I say?

Haswell will definitely have optical Thunderbolt on it. Wouldn't be surprised if all ports were USB3/SATA 6 Gb/s too.

Why not skip this and directly go to DDR5 ? Just like the GPUs have done.

GDDR5 is DDR3 with some GPU extensions.
GDDR4 was DDR2 with GPU extensions but DDR3/GDDR5 was faster than it so it was killed off...(The gist of it..)

1.3-1.35 volts apparently but it does say desktop haswells a no ,and given that they do tend to lead with new tech on enterprise ,where the big moneys spent, this is probably the way of it:ohwell:

and they dont mention usb or pciex at all, that does not imply a reduction or them staying the same, they may be finalising those choices and therefore just not saying yet:D

lol i'm stil on ddr so i skipped a few gen

Are we meant to interpret the “Haswell-EX” family as Haswell-E or Haswell enterprise Xeon processors? Wow you brits are just goofy sometimes.

My thoughts exactly.

look up.

GDDR is based off existing desktop ram designs, they just tweak it. GDDR4 was a flop, high heat and average performace, so they jumped to GDDR5 - which was based off desktop DDR3.

Bye bye single, dual, triple, and quad channel. Hello point-to-point.

This is fucked! any thing to keep there hand in my pocket lol... About time though :rockout:

BP I have DDR3 to give away Free just for you, if you want to upgrade :D serious
