Kingston Intros Data Traveller GE9 Line of 24ct Gold-Plated USB Flash Drives

Kingston unveiled the Data Traveller GE9 line of USB 2.0 flash drives, characterized by 24-carat gold-plated bodies. Available in conventional capacities of 8 GB and 16 GB, the drives are tested to provide up to 20 MB/s of transfer rates. The 16 GB variant was tested by Expreview to push bits around at 19.15 MB/s (sequential reads) and 5.14 MB/s (sequential writes). The 8 and 16 GB variants are priced at the equivalent of $8 and $14.

So you actually have to grind the gold plating all over the inside of the USB slot ... that's really something, I can already see gray markings even on these photos. I wonder would it be less noticeable if they used silver? It would look just as cool.

dirt cheap pocket change USB 2.0 flash drives get the same speeds. if they're going to plate something in gold, at least make it more than entry level junk.

I've learned my lesson from getting cheap USB drives. Even if it is just for transferring small files or videos, it's worth spending out on one. One of my drives that's about a year old only reads when it feels like it.

ye i see what you mean ,they maybe should have put the plating a bit higher up and something else where the contacts are

well theirs always different revisions being made ,so maybe they'll tidy it up

as for usb 3 devices at the other end of the scale ,i recently spotted a 128GB one that was purported to have sequential read performance at speeds up to 200MB/s and up to 120MB/s sequential write speeds ,with a price tag that ranges from $139.99 to $249.99

I will never understand what people love about 24 carat gold, except the allergic, but stay with technical stuff.:

Is anything in their specs about the gold plating for the connecters?
I'd love to see the epic fail face of someone buying this stuff and than the malfunction caused by using less than 0.76µm gold plating on the connectors.
They should use a lot more than that but the spec allows plating that's gone after 5 times :shadedshu
