AMD today unveiled a new family of low power server processors: the AMD Opteron X-Series optimized for scale-out server architectures. The first AMD Opteron X-Series processors, formerly known as "Kyoto," are the highest density, most power-efficient small core x86 processors ever built. The new X1150 and X2150 processors beat the top performing Intel Atom processor on key performance benchmarks, including single thread and throughput performance with superior power-efficiency, twice the cores and L2 cache with a more advanced pipeline architecture, higher integration and support for up to 32 gigabytes of DRAM -- 4x more than the Intel Atom processor.

The AMD Opteron X-Series processors come in two variants. The AMD Opteron X2150, which consumes as little as 11 watts, is the first server APU system-on-a-chip integrating CPU and GPU engines with a high-speed bus on a single die. This enables customers to take advantage of leading-edge AMD Radeon HD 8000 graphics technology for multimedia-oriented server workloads. The AMD Opteron X1150, which consumes as little as 9 watts, is a CPU-only version optimized for general scale-out workloads.

"The data center is at an inflection point and requires a high number of cores in a dense form factor with integrated graphics, massive amounts of DRAM and unprecedented power efficiency to keep up with the pace of innovation of Internet services," said Andrew Feldman, corporate vice president and general manager, Server Business Unit at AMD. "AMD has a proud history of server innovation, and the AMD Opteron X-Series processors challenge the status quo by providing unmatched capabilities to drive the most energy-efficient servers in the industry."

The AMD Opteron X-Series processors are now the world's premier small-core x86 APUs and CPUs, ideal for next-generation scale-out web and cloud applications ranging from big data analytics to image processing, multimedia content delivery, and hosting.

"Fundamental changes in computing architectures are required to support space, power and cost demands organizations need to deliver compelling, new infrastructure economics," said Paul Santeler, vice president and general manager, Hyperscale Server business segment, HP. "The new x86 AMD Opteron X-Series processors integrated into future HP Moonshot servers will continue to push the boundaries of power efficiency for social, mobile, cloud and big data workloads."

Another thing that Opteron X-Series has that Atom S-series doesn't, is new instruction-sets. You get AVX, AES-NI, and SSE4.2.

Yes.

So keeping that in mind, why not a no-iGPU 8-core version @ 1,5GHz @ something like 25W TDP... or are the chips inside PS4 & XBO so vastly different? I'm guessing the XBO's one might have some Microsoft patents and copyrights and such nonsense on them tho.

It's reasonable to assume these to be low binned chips from xbo so why indeed no 6-8 core one , ms can't copyright Amd Ip so that's not it.
Low chip size too 25mm2 , id expect these chips to be on an add in board possibly pciex for servers which leads to the how many per board and per 1-4u server unit.

Interesting processor, but AMD is really lacking in the ability to give this processor a name. Why the "X"? To copy Xeon naming convention, or to allude to XB1? Either way, shows lack of imagination and attempt to ride someone else's coat-tails.

X isn't copyright amd can use it too and it's a step too far bringing xeon into it , , it's no where
Near that name .

Isn't x a universal marketing/branding name. Similar to how black is used in marketing/branding.

These will definitely not be low-binned xbox chips(or PS4 chips for that matter). Those chips are architecturally very different, except the fact that they both use jaguar cores. Compared to the opterons, the xbox chip has a whole load of other asics in place for all kinds of stuff, a totally different memory hierarchy, cache system, a much bigger GPU, and everything is connected by boatloads of busses specially designed for the xbox apu instead of the more basic opteron.
Furthermore, they probably (or atleast possibly) wont even be manufactured at the same site, since Microsoft handles all the manufacturing themselves, and only got AMD to lend a hand with chip design.

Whilst I am willing to accept these are new , made for purpose sku, I don't believe anything you have said as all the excess shit could easily be cut off leaving a crippled gpu, core and uncore and if designed with binning in mind thats what would happen ie neither way is impossible .

These X series APUs are server designs and not Xbox based APUs. They have special RAM capabilities that other AMD ULV APUs do not have and many server specific benefits. This is just more goodness from AMD who is starting to roll out one winning design after another. It's all good for consumers.

Special ram capabilities eh, like?? Ecc nah like sodims nah 32gb also nowt new so what then.

Before I did say I was speculating and also agreed these could be made just for server but I think not, they could have easily done an 8 core and it would have sold better than a four so what gives.
And its not gonna be copyright stopping them, xbox chips are going to fail max bin ,do you think they are going in an actual bin for the skip.

My mind instantly stared cooking up a SFF computer with a Operton X1150 and a 7750. Maybe factoring a SSD and the motherboard about 65w of power draw total :rockout:
